HR and communication challenge s ahead... What do Millennials want? Flexibility and independence top the list, according to a new study, “Millennials and the Future of Work,” from oDesk.... Millennial workers want freedom and the flexibility to work how they want. Many Millennials have a “freelance” attitude. Almost nine in 10 (89 percent) say they prefer to work when and where they choose (compared to a corporate, 9-to-5 job). When comparing freelance work to “regular” jobs, Millennials say freelancing gives them more freedom to: - Work wherever they like (92 percent). - Work whenever they like (87 percent). - Work on more interesting projects (69 percent). - Travel while working (half say they’d prefer this to taking vacation time). You Might Have a Closet Freelancer on Your Staff Many Millennials are biding their time at regular jobs and freelancing on the side until the time is right to leave. Nearly three-fourths (71 percent) of those who work regular jobs want to quit to be entirely independent; 61 percent say they likely will quit within two years, and 17 percent say they definitely will.... Very interesting, the technology certainly exists to make this real. Organisational structures however, are slower to change. The move to flexibility I think is a good one, affording a better work life balance.

In redefining entrepreneurship what Milleniums truly expect is working from a Starbucks while typing a few lines of code and sipping coffee. When they realize it isn't that easy, that thousands like them are struggling to make ends meet, I bet you they'll think twice about that 9 to 5 steady job with a monthy pay check. Delete the scoop?

The reality that most recruiters are under 40, results in business owners seeking to recruit new staff, rarely being presented with competent and capable candidates who are mature and experienced. The fact that mature workers and younger workers possess a different type of intelligence, and a business needs both types of intelligence operating within the business to be successful, means that businesses not employing a certain percentage of mature workers are missing out on gaining a competitive advantage over companies whose employee profiles are skewed heavily towards younger employees. This excellent article, discusses the different types of intelligence that younger and older workers possess, and it identifies four opportunities for a business to improve productivity, move beyond stereotypes, increase work flexibility and improve organisation training by employing older workers.

Introducing a knowledge management framework means introducing a set of roles and accountabilities, new processes, new technologies, and new governance frameworks. You can’t just introduce the framework and expect people to “pick it up as they go along”; you need to give them some support, you need to give them some awareness, and in certain cases you need to give them some skills. A neuroscience team at Stanford University is exploring whether compassion can be learned. This has potentially great use for all sorts of places where violence and aggression cause problems — schools, prisons, streets and war zones. Dr. James Doty
The research by Dr. James Doty and his team is simply fascinating. They are asking whether altruism and compassion actually reside concretely in the human brain. Can humans be taught to be more compassionate? The answers to these questions could have major impacts for our violence-prone society.

Wow Marty...your own post is perfect! Our shop is professional/organizational learning within the University of Michigan. We have our own website, catalog and very few social media sites. Actually, we have never even used Google keywords/AdWords on our site. I'm thinking this is a definite no-no. Some of us feel it is not necessary since our customers are internal. What is your take on it?

Robin, first thanks for all the RT love today you ROCK. Now lets talk PPC. Can PPC play an important role inside of the Uof M? Maybe. If you have specific goals around list creation or have something to sell in a fairly immediate way PPC can provide an important dimension to the rest of the relationship building you do. Not sure how or what content you are monetizing, but I could see a "free UofM" study or white paper that would get my email into your list. Once there you could nurture those on your list with segmented drip campaigns. Clearly tagging those from PPC will give you the ability to judge ROI. Feel free to email your specific use case to me Martin.Smith(at)AtlanticBT.com and I will spend some time thinking about IF or HOW PPC might help. I still remember that moment in junior high school when I realized I wouldn’t, and couldn’t, become an Olympic ice skater. The window for learning to do double and triple axels had closed. Inexorably. And, having graduated from college at twenty-seven, it was rather obvious I wouldn't be gracing a “30 Under 30” list.
