Not your grandfather's streetlights: LEDs light the way

Not your grandfather's streetlights: LEDs light the way | IndustryNews - LED technology | Scoop.it
From Boston to Los Angeles, advanced LED street lighting presents challenges for utilities, yet great opportunities.

Via Dean Ernst
Tyler Skalski's insight:

"For any level of government responsible for managing roadways, street lighting is a critical service. Among other services, effective and targeted lighting on roadways dramatically can improve auto and pedestrian safety"
LED lighting opportunities offer cheaper lighting options for infrastructure as well as create oportunities for new technological innovations.
In many cities, the street lamps and installed, powered and maintained by the electric company.  Efficiency upgrades in these light, while potentially losing the company revenue due to less power being used, could potentially outweigh the offset with little to no maintainence cost with LED technology.

Future grows dimmer for classic light bulb

Future grows dimmer for classic light bulb | IndustryNews - LED technology | Scoop.it

Federal rules taking effect Jan. 1 ban the manufacture of incandescent bulbs using 40 watts of power or more, the third phase of energy efficiency legislation passed in 2007.The intent of the law is to push consumers toward more energy-efficient lighting technology than the incandescent light bulb – which has helped beat back the night for more than a century, but expends most of its energy producing heat rather than light.Compact fluorescent lamps — those spiraling tubes that some consumers may associate with harsh light and delayed start-up — cost more than incandescents but last longer and use 75 percent less energy.

Tyler Skalski's insight:

This article discusses power usage of different kinds of light bulbs.
Compact fluorescent lamps provide a much longer lifetime than incandescent lamps, using less energy.  However, currently the lamps initial cost is still more than incandescent bulbs.  New standards are being passed to eliminate the production of high power, low efficiency light bulbs.

Tapping Into Lighting To Improve People's Mood [Future of Light] - PSFK

Tapping Into Lighting To Improve People's Mood [Future of Light] - PSFK | IndustryNews - LED technology | Scoop.it
Designers are experimenting with how color and intensity of light can be deployed to reduce stress foster mental well-being.

Via Dean Ernst
Tyler Skalski's insight:

This article goes over some future applications of LED lighting technology.  In the example of Nature Trail, LEDs are imbedded in the walls of a hospital/clinic set at various hights based on use for children to adults.  Sensors detect the presence of children playing with the images on the wallpaper and react, creating a distraction for the patients.  There are also examples of interior and exterior lighting done with LED lights and various gobos.  These examples show the mood effecting capabilities of light and a trend growing towards that focus.

This weird-looking robo-bulb may end up being the best LED lightbulb ever made

This weird-looking robo-bulb may end up being the best LED lightbulb ever made | IndustryNews - LED technology | Scoop.it

This lightbulb looks more like a kid’s toy than anything you would seriously use to light your house. But don’t be fooled: This is billed as the most efficient LED lightbulb out there. Those panels are circuit boards that control 33 tiny LEDs.

Via SilverJediShade
Tyler Skalski's insight:

LED technology is on the rise in lighting design technology.  This innovation represents an improvement on the incandescent bulb, lasting for much much longer and using less energy to output the same amount of light.
