Brother Could You Spare a Pint? Redesigning Blood Donation

How can the experience of blood donation be redesigned? In the U.K., where I live, only 4 percent of eligible people donate, despite great need. For our final project in ‘Innovation Design Engineering,' a double graduate degree at The Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, Dan McLaughlin, James Wright, Zhanling Feng and I embarked on a mission to re-imagine the future of mobile blood donation in the U.K. and subsequently the WORLD.

Oil Fields in Our Attics: Weatherization Ain

Oil Fields in Our Attics: Weatherization Ain | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Oil Fields in Our Attics: Weatherization Ain't Sexy, But It's Immediate and DIY

Forget nuclear and natural gas. Put aside plug-in hybrids and photovoltaics. Skip the smart grid and better battery storage. For all the exciting talk of breakthrough technologies and advanced energy R&D, the best hope we have for satisfying our ever-increasing appetite for energy is decidedly low-tech, and not particularly sexy.

So put down the keys to your Tesla Model S, and pick up the caulk gun. Because we’re going to talk about weatherization. (I warned you...this energy solution ain’t sexy.)

Why weatherization?

Sharla Shults's insight:

But weatherization—boring, low-tech, 20th Century weatherization—is something we can all do right now, and given our insatiable national appetite for fossil fuels, it’s something that we can’t really afford to overlook any longer.

Awakenings: How do I Love Thee

Awakenings: How do I Love Thee | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

With Valentine's Day tomorrow, let's examine some history behind this day and what makes it so special. The featured article on Awakenings is from Micki Peluso, author of ...And the Whippoorwill Sang.

February 14th sometimes signifies the first day of Lent, depending upon the date of Easter, and is also Admission Day in Arizona. Most people however, celebrate the day by sending comic or heartfelt Valentines to family, friends and lovers. People seem to delight in St. Valentine’s Day, as florists, candy stores, boutiques and card shops do a rallying business providing heart-shaped novelties of all variety. Chocolate, long known for having properties that produce a euphoric feeling similar to the bittersweet emotion of love, seems an appropriate gift for St. Valentine’s Day.

Postal Service Takes Drastic Action

Postal Service Takes Drastic Action | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON — Saturday mail may soon go the way of the Pony Express and penny postcards. The Postal Service said Wednesday that it plans to cut back to five-day-a-week deliveries for everything except packages to stem its financial losses in a world radically re-ordered by the Internet.

"Our financial condition is urgent," declared Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe. But Congress has voted in the past to bar the idea of eliminating Saturday delivery, and his announcement immediately drew protests from some lawmakers. The plan, which is to take effect in August, also brought vigorous objections from farmers, the letter carriers' union and others.

Is this just the beginning of another American icon biting the dust? e-this and e-that is taking control.

One Day in Schools Can Spark a Lifelong Commitment to a Cause

One Day in Schools Can Spark a Lifelong Commitment to a Cause | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

"Why not volunteer on MLK Day?" was the confused response my 7-year-old son gave when his friend asked why he spent his 'day off' working with 1,000 other volunteers painting, organizing, and building in one of Brooklyn's most underperforming schools. Being a mother and the executive director of City Year New York has offered me many opportunities where my worlds serendipitously intersect and great moments like these are born. And in this particular moment I was reminded once again that the importance of service days like these isn't just the physical improvement we make to the schools we volunteer in, but rather the lasting impression we make in the minds of the volunteers who realize the impact they can have.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Want to make a lasting impression and leave a rewarding impact? You do! Then, volunteer! You can do this any time!

If you value your work and treasure your freedom, you should take a look. This isn't something that's happening far away. It will ultimately affect all of us and end the free internet as we know it. This is not some sinister cabal. It's good old corporate greed. There's a huge amount of money to be made from mining the internet; we are in the way. The only thing we have going for us is our numbers. If we hang together and we can make enough noise to at least get a hearing. Otherwise, we'll disappear without a trace and we'll be remembing this as "the good old days," when cyber space was free.

Green Ninja: A Smokey the Bear for Climate Change

Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own superhero to reduce the global carbon footprint? Enter the Green Ninja, a climate action superhero who fights global warming through education and social change.

We all know the importance of reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases to help stabilize our climate system. In 2012, the U.S. experienced a number of significant weather and climate events including the warmest year on record, a drought that peaked in July with over 60 percent of the nation in drought conditions, and devastating storms including Super Storm Sandy. Together with another record-setting minimum in Arctic sea ice, policy makers have again been forced to take climate change seriously.

So what is the way forward and could the Green Ninja help?

Sharla Shults's insight:

The Green Ninja Project is a collaboration among scientists, educators, and artists to create unique educational experiences that inspire young people to take action on climate change.

Why Carbon Footprints Matter: What I Learned from my Hyper-Detailed Calculations

Why Carbon Footprints Matter: What I Learned from my Hyper-Detailed Calculations | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

A few years ago, I decided to figure out my exact personal carbon footprint—from every glass of wine, to a new pair of underwear, what impact I was having on the world. I thought I was probably doing a decent job; I was already running a renewable energy company, commuting by bike, and aware of energy issues. But the picture was pretty grim.

People have called me anally-retentive and obsessive-compulsive, and that's true. This is my life in excruciating detail, converted to the basic unit of watts so everything could easily be compared.

A Circular Economy: Why the Next Packaging Will Be Grown, NOT Manufactured | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

Infinite economic growth is at odds with our finite planet, and this obsession with endless growth is driving us towards ecological catastrophe.
