The Key to a Successful Book Sale: Social Networks

by Dr. Heather Manley
Those authors who don’t want to engage in the social media networking might be losing out on sales; especially, global sales. Blogging, twitter, facebook and pinterest may sound daunting, but in reality they are musts for all authors to establish a successful book brand.  And remember, social networking is not about self-promotion, it’s about networking with other authors: sharing posts, re-tweeting, and re-pinning. All of this will enhance word of mouth for your book and let you meet a lot of new friends!

Bullying can affect everyone—those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness bullying and is linked to many negative outcomes. Take children's complaints of bullying seriously, whether at school, on the playground, in the park, on the Internet. Probing a seemingly minor complaint may uncover more severe grievances. Children are often afraid or ashamed to tell anyone that they have been bullied, so listen to their complaints!

Exploratory Learning: A Toolkit to Turn Elementary School Kids Into 'Neighborhood Detectives' | Education on GOOD

Exploratory Learning: A Toolkit to Turn Elementary School Kids Into 'Neighborhood Detectives' | Education on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

As Neighbor Day approaches, we here at GOOD would like to suggest that kids take a break from all that in-class activity and explore the world right outside their door. In collaboration with two wonderful first grade teachers, we’ve put together this terrific tool kit: the projects within it demonstrate that, for elementary school kids in particular, there are a million things to learn and discover while taking a walk around the block.

The Neighborhood Tool Kit takes its inspiration from Ms. Linnea and Mr. James’ first grade class at Children’s Day School in San Francisco. The school is located in the heart of the city’s Mission District where a walk in any direction provides a unique sensory experience. The 22 students set out on several journeys: from home to school, and from school to local business and landmarks (like the historic Mission Dolores across the street or the busy Bi-Rite Market two blocks south). Sights, smells and sounds of the streets were experienced and recorded. Maps were made. Interviews with neighbors, teachers, family members were conducted. Stories were written, art created.

Living the writer’s life. | Chip MacGregor .com

Living the writer’s life. | Chip MacGregor .com | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

Guest post with Philip Patterson

I’ve been blessed. I’ll admit it. I broke in to both publishing and college textbook publishing when an unsolicited manuscript was opened, usually returned and sometimes had constructive comments scrawled on it. That’s a long time ago. But after I got my foot (feet?) into two doors, I found that the work had just started. A couple of decades later, here’s what I know about the writer’s life. None of this is unique to me, but if you catch a pattern in what most of your advisors are saying—it’s for a reason.

Podreu descobrir que diuen els últims estudis sobre el perquè el nostre cervell li agrada tant la música.

Natalie Gaskins's curator insight, May 11, 11:18 AM

One day, I would love to venture into the field that connects Neuroscience with Music and that is why this article caught my attention right away. I admit to listening to certain songs and having to completely stop whatever I am doing because it was THAT good. I always wondered why that is and why certain sounds that we hear trigger emotions, or stimulation in our brains. I can agree with what the writer said in that we set up expectations in our brains with familiar styles of music and loved to be deceived when the music takes a different direction.I also agree that it is no longer enjoyable when the music goes too astray from what my brain wanted. It just gets annoying that way! It keeps excitement in the song and makes you try to anticipate what is going to happen next. It is a way to keep the listener attentive. I know that when I song is too predictable, it quickly looses my attention. As a songwriter, I feel that this is very crucial when writing. We have to keep the audience engaged at all times. This is also why artists make certain line-up choices while performing at a gig. I thought it odd that we get a different level of satisfaction when we have paid for the music and are then anticipating the surprise. Very odd.

I would love to venture deeper into these studies and unlock more neurological secrets. Knowledge like this can help sell music.
