Are Humans Out of Place in the Modern World? | Ask Good on GOOD

Are Humans Out of Place in the Modern World? | Ask Good on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

Sea turtles can have a hard time in the modern world. When hatchlings are born on the beach, they instinctively head toward the brightest part of the horizon. They developed this instinct over millennia because the brightest part of the horizon had always been the ocean, where light reflected off the water. These days, this instinct often leads them astray. In developed areas, they head toward brightly lit beach houses or coastal roads instead.

This is a case of so-called evolutionary mismatch, when traits that evolved in one environment have negative consequences in another. The turtles’ instinct works well in a natural environment, without artificial light. In a man-made environment, it is often fatal.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Sometimes, however, the mismatch between the environment we evolved in and the one we live in plays out in less clear-cut ways.

How fascinating! It takes 365 days to lay and incubate the egg, then raise the chick. The albatross only lays one egg a year and then usually takes a breeding year off. But Wisdom amazingly, usually has a new chick each year.

We pass the time of day to forget how time passes: Amazon may raise prime subscription prices after a bad holiday season

We pass the time of day to forget how time passes: Amazon may raise prime subscription prices after a bad holiday season | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

If the world’s biggest, most aggressive, and lowest-cost online retailer had a bad quarter, then it really was one of the worst holiday seasons in years. Amazon reported earnings today that missed expectations on both sales and profit.

The company had sales of $25.59 billion, a 20% increase from the year before but below analysts expectations of $26.06 billion. The earnings miss was bigger, 51 cents per share versus the 66 cents analysts expected, for a net income of $239 million.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Amazon isn’t the only online retailer to report weak results: eBay revenue and sales for the fourth quarter also missed expectations. More confirmation of what many analysts and companies have already described as a weak holiday shopping season is expected to come when retailers report their financial results in February.

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

  • Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.
  • Courage to defend their own criteria against others.
  • Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.
  • Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.
  • Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

Via Gust MEES
Sharla Shults's insight:

So many students simply want the answer...no thinking involved, the easy way. We are doing our youth a tremendous injustice not emphasizing both the metacognitive and critical thinking processes. They need to be able to explore a problem, then analyze, explain, and evaluate it in order to survive as adults.

Epic California Drought and Groundwater: Where Do We Go From Here?

Epic California Drought and Groundwater: Where Do We Go From Here? | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Yesterday our team at the UC Center for Hydrologic Modeling released a report on the California drought.  The report describes the birds-eye view of statewide water resources that we see from the NASA GRACE satellite mission. We’ve been working since the mid-1990’s, well before the mission was launched in 2002, to develop and test methods…
Sharla Shults's insight:

A little up, a lot down, a little increase, a big plunge.  The downs are way bigger than the ups, which means that groundwater levels are on a one-way journey to the very bottom of the Central Valley. Without an effective groundwater management plan, we’ll be in Trouble.  If we jump off that cliff, there may be no safety net to break the fall. Stay tuned!
