Social media bring people together — in the real world - USA TODAY

Social media bring people together — in the real world - USA TODAY | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

USA TODAY

Millions of people all over the country are turning to the Internet — so they can get off the Internet.

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, which focus on keeping peoples' social interactions online, a growing number of social-networking sites are helping users take online connections offline.

The idea is simple: make your initial meeting online. Then meet in person, in the real world.

Sharla Shults's insight:

The top Meetup categories are: moms, hiking and outdoors activities and business. And the options continue to grow — every nine seconds.

The Role of a Dictionary

The Role of a Dictionary | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Good writing may exceed the boundaries suggested, if not intended, by dictionary definitions.

When it happens I feel as if I have stepped into a Far Side cartoon. I am a magazine editor, and the galley of an article will come back from a proofreader with a low-frequency word circled and this comment in the margin: “Does this word even exist?” or “Is this a real word?”

Via Kenneth Weene
Sharla Shults's insight:

What a dictionary is for is rarely what a writer needs: basic help in using individual words. Of course, when a writer needs such help it is critical that he or she gets it. Only it should be kept in mind that good writing may exceed the boundaries suggested, if not intended, by dictionary definitions. As one lexicographer put it, “Nothing worth writing is written from a dictionary.”

New Smashwords Research Helps Authors and Publishers Sell More Ebooks

New Smashwords Research Helps Authors and Publishers Sell More Ebooks | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Don't let data-driven decision-making cause you to make stupid decisions.

Last year at the 2012 RT Booklovers in Chicago, I released a first-of-its-kind study that analyzed sales data for self-published ebooks. Our goal was to identify potential factors that could help authors sell more ebooks.

Two weeks ago at the 2013 RT Booklovers convention in Kansas City, I shared new, updated data in a session titled, Money, Money, Money -- Facts & Figures for Financial Payoff.

Some of the results were surprising, some were silly, and some I expect will help authors and publishers make their ebooks more appealing to consumers

Sharla Shults's insight:

I haven't ventured into Smashwords but from the sound of thie article, I may be missing out!

How do cyber criminals get your data? What do they do with it?

How do cyber criminals get your data? What do they do with it? | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

By now, most everyone has heard the story: on April 23rd, the AP’s twitter account was “hacked.” The tweet, which was a fairly obviously fake, still managed to send Wall Street into a panic. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 145 points in 2 minutes.

So why is this important? It highlights the reality of the threat landscape.

The point of the story is that mobile security isn’t just about protecting you from viruses. Threats don’t only come in the form of malicious applications that one inadvertently “sideloads” onto his or her device. Mobile security is also about making sure your data is protected.

It doesn’t matter whether the economic climate is good or bad, there is always a market for fraud. The marketplace for carding is growing and will continue to grow. And as the engineers behind these types of attacks get smarter and smarter, we can only expect to see them more and more often.

Why Erasing All The World's Borders Would Double GDP | Global Citizenship on GOOD

Why Erasing All The World's Borders Would Double GDP | Global Citizenship on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

Economists have estimated that opening the world’s borders to migration could double world GDP. To get the gist of that number, imagine that your boss walked into your office tomorrow and said, “we’re doubling your salary”—and the same thing happened to everyone else, too.

What would we all do with the money?

Sharla Shults's insight:

Under open borders, some would come who don’t want to be Americans. They’d stay a little while, earn some money, and go home. Nothing wrong with that. Others would want to stay, and, please note, they’d have made a positive choice to be Americans, as native-born Americans have not done. When you think about it that way, it’s not surprising that open borders never seem to have weakened anyone’s national identity much, just as a church doesn’t lose its distinctiveness by accepting converts.

Identity Crisis: Are the Stakes of Our Educational and Professional Futures Too High? | Education on GOOD

Identity Crisis: Are the Stakes of Our Educational and Professional Futures Too High? | Education on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Parents have always held visions of what professional uniforms their sons or daughters should wear. These visions are becoming fetishes in a world in which professional titles provide license to a reframed American Dream.

Christina Freeland describes it as a "winner-take-all economy" in which "education is the trump card." Consequently, parents over time have increased their investments in education to ensure that their children are not second-class citizens in a high skilled economy.

Sharla Shults's insight:

City Year corps members prove that civics is not just a course to take. Service is not a noble but extraneous distraction. Service helps translate classroom lessons of English into improved moral discernment in our neighborhoods. Service provides opportunities for students to decode mathematics into community building. Through deeds and presence, service helps make clear the choices we all possess to make conditions in our communities better. And isn't that the point to a great education?

Inside the Paris apartment untouched for 70 years: Treasure trove finally revealed after owner locked up and fled at outbreak of WWII | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
Laying untouched for seven decades the abandoned home was discovered three years ago after its owner died aged 91.

Caked in dust and full of turn-of-the century treasures, this Paris apartment is like going back in time.

The woman who owned the flat, a Mrs De Florian, had fled for the south of France before the outbreak of the Second World War.

She never returned and in the 70 years since, it looks like no-one had set foot inside.

Learn exactly what foods you need to be eating organically from now on!

If we all lived in a perfect world we’d do our weekly food shopping at the local farmer’s markets, eating eggs that were just laid by our pet chickens, working with our local neighbors to buy whole grass fed cows, and having our local farmers over for dinner, and so on.

This lifestyle would result in us being extremely healthy, but unfortunately the reality that I just described isn’t realistic for most people to live out on a day to day basis… and honestly who on earth would want to even if it was possible?

Video: The Making of the World’s Smallest Video | Technology on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

Scientists have developed tools to investigate the mysteries of our universe as never before, whether using high powered telescopes to peer at galaxies beyond our own, or specially designed microscopes to pinpoint the millions of molecules on the tip of your finger. From the furthest reaches of space to the tiniest particles on Earth, scientists are pioneering ways to see our world in entirely new ways. In this spirit of discovery, the IBM atomic memory research team have been exploring the limits and capabilities of how atoms—the building blocks of everything on Earth—can be used in unexpected ways. As they study how these tiny particles might be used for storing immense amounts of data in computation and information storage, they decided to make a movie created with atoms—a challenging, never attempted feat to painstakingly move thousands of individual atoms—to show what can be possible in atomic research.

Sharla Shults's insight:

The IBM team created what’s now known as the world’s smallest movie, A Boy and His Atom, which was made by magnifying atoms 100 million times through a scanning tunneling microscope.
