At 826, Tomorrow's Volunteers are Today's Students

"I come here because I can relate to the students. I grew up this way. I struggled with English writing and English speaking. I know the importance of receiving positive reinforcement, and that's what students get when they come to 826LA. I volunteer because my heart is in helping students."—Vicente Ruvalcaba, 826LA volunteer

Imagine your city in the year 2050, when volunteering is as common as putting gas in your car or eating lunch. A time when individuals find the gratification they're searching for by helping and connecting with others. It can and must happen.

Sharla Shults's insight:

The result will be more united, culturally richer, and stronger communities. Pledge 1 percent of your time—that’s 20 hours—to being part of the solution.

Students of DIY Workshop Make First Skateboards in Afghanistan

Skateistan began as a Kabul-based NGO, and now operates projects in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Pakistan, with a second facility opening in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, in 2013. Skateistan focuses on reaching out to girls and working children, using skateboarding as a tool for developing leadership opportunities, and building friendship, trust, and social capital among its students. While skateboarding is the initial way to get students involved, Skateistan is then able to provide access to education and platforms for self-expression that help break the cycles of poverty and exclusion.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Boys and girls participating in a cultural exchange to share new ideas - what a sizzlin' idea, growing and learning together.

One Day in Schools Can Spark a Lifelong Commitment to a Cause

One Day in Schools Can Spark a Lifelong Commitment to a Cause | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

"Why not volunteer on MLK Day?" was the confused response my 7-year-old son gave when his friend asked why he spent his 'day off' working with 1,000 other volunteers painting, organizing, and building in one of Brooklyn's most underperforming schools. Being a mother and the executive director of City Year New York has offered me many opportunities where my worlds serendipitously intersect and great moments like these are born. And in this particular moment I was reminded once again that the importance of service days like these isn't just the physical improvement we make to the schools we volunteer in, but rather the lasting impression we make in the minds of the volunteers who realize the impact they can have.

Sharla Shults's insight:

Want to make a lasting impression and leave a rewarding impact? You do! Then, volunteer! You can do this any time!
