Why True Neighborhood Building Requires the Dedication of a Few 'Zealous Nuts' | Cities on GOOD

Why True Neighborhood Building Requires the Dedication of a Few 'Zealous Nuts' | Cities on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
We all have our own families, friends, and professional networks, and our own interests and hobbies that determine with whom we interact. Each of us is a member of many different communities that can extend over vast geographical areas.
Sharla Shults's insight:

We all choose to be the kind of neighbors that we want to be, through the ways in which we interact with each other in our local streets and spaces. In so doing, we choose to make our neighborhood the place that it is. What kind of place do you choose to create?

Celebrate NEIGHBORDAY tomorrow, April 27, 2013!

Exploratory Learning: A Toolkit to Turn Elementary School Kids Into 'Neighborhood Detectives' | Education on GOOD

Exploratory Learning: A Toolkit to Turn Elementary School Kids Into 'Neighborhood Detectives' | Education on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

As Neighbor Day approaches, we here at GOOD would like to suggest that kids take a break from all that in-class activity and explore the world right outside their door. In collaboration with two wonderful first grade teachers, we’ve put together this terrific tool kit: the projects within it demonstrate that, for elementary school kids in particular, there are a million things to learn and discover while taking a walk around the block.

The Neighborhood Tool Kit takes its inspiration from Ms. Linnea and Mr. James’ first grade class at Children’s Day School in San Francisco. The school is located in the heart of the city’s Mission District where a walk in any direction provides a unique sensory experience. The 22 students set out on several journeys: from home to school, and from school to local business and landmarks (like the historic Mission Dolores across the street or the busy Bi-Rite Market two blocks south). Sights, smells and sounds of the streets were experienced and recorded. Maps were made. Interviews with neighbors, teachers, family members were conducted. Stories were written, art created.

Density, Neighborliness, and the Concentrated

Density, Neighborliness, and the Concentrated | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it

When I think about neighbors, I think about density. That's likely because my work includes occasionally travelling the world talking about great city-building, including what I call "density done well."

I discuss all the public interest benefits of smart densification in cities, designing for more people on less land using less resources, from lowering our carbon footprint and increasing our energy resiliency, to making walking, biking and transit more inviting, improving our public health, and avoiding the bankrupting economic costs of sprawl.

However, my favorite way of thinking about density is by looking at people. Putting more people together in beautifully designed neighborhoods and places, supports everything that makes us human, from creativity, tolerance, and happiness—to even sexiness!

Sharla Shults's insight:

Neighborliness...a real human connection...not a thing of the past!

Celebrate Neighborday on April 27 | Neighboring on GOOD

Celebrate Neighborday on April 27 | Neighboring on GOOD | Sizzlin' News | Scoop.it
It’s crazy how few of us know our neighbors: their names, their phone numbers, what they’re about. The explosion of online "social" networking has only made it easier to avoid face-to-face contact in the real world.
Sharla Shults's insight:

I remember the days when a neighborhood meant more than just a group of people living on the same block. It was a community of people whereby no one was treated any less than another and everyone called everyone by their first name, celebrated together, cried together and shared together...IN PERSON!
