Schools will start teaching typing instead of longhand

Schools will start teaching typing instead of longhand | Finland | Scoop.it
TEACHING children to write is transitioning to a computer era, as traditional cursive writing and calligraphy will not be taught at Finnish schools after the autumn 2016 and will be replaced with the study of typing skills, reported Savon Sanomat on 18 November.
Veronica Maria Gelfgren's insight:

Kids leaving notes on the kitchen table for their parents...I guess not...I believe they are texting the parents already anyway...however...beautiful perfectly balanced handwriting like my mothers' will never be seen again after cursive writing is removed from the curriculum...

Why Are Finland's Schools Successful?

Why Are Finland's Schools Successful? | Finland | Scoop.it
The country's achievements in education have other nations, especially the United States, doing their homework
Veronica Maria Gelfgren's insight:

Whatever it takes is a nice thought and the Finns really are trying to incorporate this in school but there are other option for adults as well... As a corporate language teacher I also know that if given the resources and the time we can teach anyone another language. I have had several students who I have gone from "Zero Swedish to complete fluency within 1-2 years" when the corporation they worked for allowed them enough time to study and not having to use only the "old-fashioned" methods but allowed me to at the same time introduce the lifestyle in Finland through the Swedish language. Typically this means: Discussing daily things, playing word games, going sight seeing, dealing with personal errands of the student, having coffee, lunches and dinners, shopping for food and other items, going to museums, theaters, reading magazines and newspapers, taking small trips, doing sports together, talking on the phone, dealing with paperwork/ insurances/ applications/ correspondence ...etc However...grammar & vocabulary worksheets and a lot of grammar, picture, discussion & vocabulary flash cards were also a part of the course. But in the end, what better way is there to learn a language than using it in the "real" situations outside the classroom...? On top of that;  the added benefit is that the student also can get the daily errands done while studying Swedish and having some fun at the same time:)

Vocational education: why the Finns do it best

Vocational education: why the Finns do it best | Finland | Scoop.it
Could technical training help to tackle youth unemployment? Gita Subrahmanyam argues Finland's approach has key lessons for the developing world
Veronica Maria Gelfgren's insight:

Perhaps there's something in this...however it doesn't always work...:) As Finland is a high tech society it is assumed that "everyone" knows how to use IT and all the basic computer programs and you really can't even consider applying for a job without the IT skills needed. Another good example is that if Finnish vocational students can manage to find an internship, they will receive the most beneficial form of education; some lessons in school and a lot of work practice as well as an ok salary and the possibility to perhaps land a full time job after the internship is over. It would be advisable for the givernment to make some extra effort into teaching youngsters a bit more about entrepreneurship while still in school...
