It's official: a global mass extinction is under way

It's official: a global mass extinction is under way | Sins against nature | Scoop.it

"New research confirms that the next mass extinction is in progress, and we’re the cause. There’s been little doubt that humans have been severely altering the planet and reducing biodiversity, but it has been unclear how many species go extinct under normal circumstances, without human influence.

This new research clarifies the rate of 'background extinction' (the rate of extinction during the point before humans became a primary contributor to extinction). The research confirms that human activity is driving species extinct at a rate far higher than the background rate. A look at previous events suggests cause for concern. Geologists recognize five previous mass extinction events— the end of the Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous periods, meaning that we’re now in the 6th."

BP Lake Michigan Oil Spill: Did Tar Sands Spill Into the Great Lake?

BP Lake Michigan Oil Spill: Did Tar Sands Spill Into the Great Lake? | Sins against nature | Scoop.it
With a drinking water source for seven million people at stake, this "tar sands name game" is one with high stakes indeed....
Annette Lengyel's insight:

If this is happening now with existing pipelines, we can expect it to increase exponentially with more pipelines built to move tar sands through the heart of the nation.  This is where greed trumps life.

In photos: al-Walaja village faces “slow death” as Israel takes its land | Sins against nature | Scoop.it
The construction of the wall, which began in 2007 in spite of an ongoing legal battle and protests, constitutes the latest chapter of the ongoing history of dispossession of al-Walaja.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Israel murders people, animals, land....like all psychopaths, they have no conscience, nor remorse...just a never ending drive to kill, uproot, bulldoze, imprison, harass, humiliate, subjugate, and finally "cleanse" all that they do not label as "Jewish" or bend to the "Jewish" will.  These people, like the Taliban or al Qaeda or western imperialism and corporatism are among the hordes of barbarians that hate all who are not them, or who cannot profit them. Who will stop these murderous monsters so that we may all have peace and justice?

Fracking Boom Leaves Texans Under a Toxic Cloud

Fracking Boom Leaves Texans Under a Toxic Cloud | Sins against nature | Scoop.it
'Since 2008, more than 7,000 oil and gas wells have been sunk into the brittle, sedimentary rock. Another 5,500 have been approved by state regulators, making the Eagle Ford one of the most active drilling sites in America.' Bloomberg
Annette Lengyel's insight:

7000 wells drilled since 2008, another 5500 approved and,  "Our investigation and records obtained from Texas regulatory agencies reveal a system that does more to protect the industry than the public."

Texas will be burning before someone in government gets some common sense and regulates it for the safety and protection of it's citizens.

Or perhaps they'll just let Texas burn.

//"The energy industry's impact on Americans living near drilling areas has been fiercely debated in the last decade, as the shale boom brought drilling to vast stretches of the United States. Much of the concern has centered on how methane and fracking chemicals can contaminate drinking water. But scientists say air pollution is an equally serious problem that receives less attention, in part because it's so difficult to track.

Plumes of contaminated air move with the wind. Some of the chemicals break down in sunlight or react with other pollutants to form new compounds. The evidence disappears quickly, while health effects may linger.

People who live close to oil and gas development—whether in Texas' Eagle Ford, Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale or Wyoming's Green River Basin—tend to report the same symptoms: nausea, nosebleeds, headaches, body rashes and respiratory problems. Public health experts say these shared experiences point to a pressing need for improved air monitoring."//

What did the IDF censor want to hide about Israel's breached oil pipeline? - Business

What did the IDF censor want to hide about Israel's breached oil pipeline? - Business | Sins against nature | Scoop.it
TheMarker was going to run a story about the Eilat-Ashkelon Pipeline Company in 2012 - then the military censor called.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

"In 2011, the spill was contained after spreading for 500 meters. This time, the slick covered 7-8 kilometers. Whereas rehabilitation after the 2011 spill took 8-10 months, this time it will take an estimated 50 years. And in contrast to 2011, in which there was a ministerial outcry after the environmental disaster, the third disaster to strike in four years has been met with near-silence.

"No enraged voice of an environmental protection minister was heard following what was defined by ministry officials as the “worst ecological calamity in the state’s history.” The reason lies with the new minister, Netanyahu, who assumed the post last month after the resignation of MK Amir Peretz (Hatnuah)."

By the Way, Your Home Is On Fire | The Nation

By the Way, Your Home Is On Fire | The Nation | Sins against nature | Scoop.it
Our climate crisis requires us to evacuate our normal way of doing things.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

"An extraordinary new report tells us that ninety corporations and states are responsible for nearly two-thirds of all the carbon emissions that have changed our climate and our world since 1751. Chevron alone is responsible for 3.52 percent of that total, ExxonMobil for 3.22 percent and BP for 2.24 percent. China since 1751 is responsible for 8.56 percent—less, that is, than those three petroleum giants. It’s true that they produced that energy, rather than (for the most part) consuming it, but at this point we need to address the producers.

The most terrifying thing about the study by Richard Heede of Climate Mitigation Services in Colorado, and the chart of his data that Duncan Clark and Kiln, a data-visualization firm, made for the Guardian is that 63 percent of all human-generated carbon emissions have been produced in the past 25 years; that is, nearly two-thirds have been emitted since the first warnings were sounded about what was then called “global warming” and the need to stop or scale back. We on Earth now, we who have been adults for at least 25 years, are the ones who have done more than all earlier human beings combined to unbalance the atmosphere of the planet, and thus its weather systems, oceans, and so much more."
