Agent-Based Models of Strategies for the Emergence and Evolution of Grammatical Agreement | Simulation | Scoop.it

Grammatical agreement means that features associated with one linguistic unit (for example number or gender) become associated with another unit and then possibly overtly expressed, typically with morphological markers. It is one of the key mechanisms used in many languages to show that certain linguistic units within an utterance grammatically depend on each other. Agreement systems are puzzling because they can be highly complex in terms of what features they use and how they are expressed. Moreover, agreement systems have undergone considerable change in the historical evolution of languages. This article presents language game models with populations of agents in order to find out for what reasons and by what cultural processes and cognitive strategies agreement systems arise.

We presented here the first agent-based models to explore how and why a grammatical agreement system may originate and get culturally transmitted in a process of cultural invention and social learning, based on the hypothesis that agreement systems are useful to avoid combinatorial explosions in parsing and semantic ambiguity in interpretation. Agreement systems thus help to minimize cognitive effort and maximize communicative success. After demonstrating how formal markers could arise, we presented strategies showing how meaningful markers could originate, and how markers could become recruited from existing words. We demonstrated also how recruited words could erode to lead to greater articulatory efficiency, at a cost of giving fewer hints for new language users, and how coercion helps to apply an agreement system more broadly so that fewer agreement markers are needed.

This paper investigates the impact of referee behaviour on the quality and efficiency of peer review. We focused on the importance of reciprocity motives in ensuring cooperation between all involved parties. We modelled peer review as a process based on knowledge asymmetries and subject to evaluation bias. We built various simulation scenarios in which we tested different interaction conditions and author and referee behaviour. We found that reciprocity cannot always have per se a positive effect on the quality of peer review, as it may tend to increase evaluation bias. It can have a positive effect only when reciprocity motives are inspired by disinterested standards of fairness.

Interplay between Network Topology and Dynamics in Neural Systems

This thesis is a compendium of research which brings together ideas from the fields of Complex Networks and Computational Neuroscience to address two questions regarding neural systems: 
1) How the activity of neurons, via synaptic changes, can shape the topology of the network they form part of, and 
2) How the resulting network structure, in its turn, might condition aspects of brain behaviour. 
Although the emphasis is on neural networks, several theoretical findings which are relevant for complex networks in general are presented -- such as a method for studying network evolution as a stochastic process, or a theory that allows for ensembles of correlated networks, and sets of dynamical elements thereon, to be treated mathematically and computationally in a model-independent manner. Some of the results are used to explain experimental data -- certain properties of brain tissue, the spontaneous emergence of correlations in all kinds of networks... -- and predictions regarding statistical aspects of the central nervous system are made. The mechanism of Cluster Reverberation is proposed to account for the near-instant storage of novel information the brain is capable of.

Synchronization is a natural phenomenon in non-linear dynamical systems. The relative importance of various mechanisms of population synchrony has been debated by population ecologists. The debate revolves around the issue whether the regionally extrinsic or locally intrinsic agents are more potent. In the present paper, we have attempted to demonstrate that a local intrinsic mechanism, predation, can be more common cause of population synchrony than is believed. Two chaotic food chains having different kinds of top-predators are synchronized using a recently proposed algorithm by Lu and Cao [Lu J, Cao J. Adaptive complete synchronization of two identical or different chaotic (hyperchaotic) dynamical systems with fully unknown parameters. Chaos 2005;15(043901):1–10]. The idiosyncracy of this approach is that it takes care of the uncertainties involved in the parameter estimation. The complete synchronization achieved is robust to noise present in the system. We suggest that local intrinsic causes of population synchrony should be given more attention.
