Cooking with Catnip
Smart Gardener's insight:

I have to be honest, I’m more than a little curious to know what catnip cookies or candied catnip leaves taste like. I might have to make some just to see.

What about you? Would you eat catnip cookies? Assuming you could keep them away from your cat long enough to enjoy them?

Borage: Blue Borage

Borage: Blue Borage | Simply Grow Great Food | Scoop.it
Children especially take delight in the pretty shape and color of borage
Smart Gardener's insight:

Herbs A-Z: B is for Borage

Frankly, most gardeners I know grow borage mainly for its ability to attract beneficial insects and to confuse harmful insects. And that's fine, because it really does do both of those things quite well. And all while being quite lovely in the the garden!

But borage is also an edible plant with a long history of use as a medicinal herb, and as a green vegetable as well. Both the flowers and the leaves have a taste similar to cucumbers. In parts of Europe the whole plant is cooked up much the way we cook other greens.

And, perhaps the most famous use of borage flowers is as a garnish in the Pimm's Cup cocktail!

Lettuce: Jericho

Lettuce: Jericho | Simply Grow Great Food | Scoop.it

Very tall and heat tolerant.

Bred for desert heat, Jericho thrives in our hot summers. The tall (24"), heavy, light green heads retain their sweetness even when other lettuces have gone bitter or gone to seed. Good tipburn resistance, a favorite among market growers. Israeli introduction.

Smart Gardener's insight:

Romaine varieties grow a long head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib down the center, and are quite popular in the United States. This is the variety of lettuce used in the popular Caesar salad. They are fairly easy to grow and tolerate some heat. Under good growing conditions, these varieties can be one of the fastest growing crops.

Lettuce: Iceberg Superior

Lettuce: Iceberg Superior | Simply Grow Great Food | Scoop.it
Heat resistant, but also does well in cool temperatures
Smart Gardener's insight:

Heading lettuce (Iceberg or Crisphead varieties) form tight, dense heads that resemble cabbage. They are the mildest in flavor, and generally grown for their crispy texture rather than for flavor.

This is the most common type of lettuce in the US, likely because it ships well. It's low in flavor and nutritional content, and often derided as "restaurant lettuce," served with a wedge of bland tomato and topped with some Thousand Island dressing. But don't count it out -- it's perfect for ice-cold lettuce wraps and other summer dishes.

Catnip

Catnip | Simply Grow Great Food | Scoop.it
Smart Gardener's insight:

Herbs A-Z: C is for Catnip!

Did you know that catnip is a member of the mint family? And as such, it should be planted in a protected area so it does not take over your entire garden.

Also, feel free to learn from my own mistake, and plant it in a sturdy pot that cannot be easily tipped over (and broken) by your neighbor’s cat when it becomes so excited and wants to roll around in the leaves!

This site has lots of great info about the history of catnip and how it has been used around the world.

Basil: Dark Purple Opal

Basil: Dark Purple Opal | Simply Grow Great Food | Scoop.it
Produces abundant crop all summer long
Smart Gardener's insight:

Purple basil isn't that much different than green basil. The different plants have slight differences in flavor overtones, but still have a strong basil base.

That said, purple basil is a strikingly beautiful plant to have in your garden. Its foliage is a stunning contrast to the mostly green of everything else. And when added to your usual dishes as a replacement for green basil, it becomes not only a delicious meal, but a feast for the eyes as well.
