Places to go in Sri Lanka: readers' travel tips

Colombo, Jaffna and Galle captivate readers, as do Sri Lanka's national parks (with leopards), beautiful B&Bs, street food (with a real kick) and tea. Lots of tea

Have tea, dinner or cocktails in Helga's Folly, a fabulously spooky gothic mansion in the midst of jungle flora with to-die-for views of the historic city of Kandy. Every inch is covered in paintings, photographs, mirrors and dripping candles. This is where Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier and Zandra Rhodes stayed and where the Stereophonics wrote an ode to its owner, Madame Helga. The eccentric proprietor, former model Helga de Silva Blow Perera, moves in circles of artists, politicians and intrigue, lives in the Folly and introduces herself personally to guests. Rooms may be a bit run-down and pricey, but the Alice-in-Wonderland-kitsch-meets-avant-garde gesamtkunstwerk style is not to be missed.

Sri Lanka | The Top 21 Destinations for 2016 [SLIDESHOW]

Sri Lanka | The Top 21 Destinations for 2016 [SLIDESHOW] | Simon Thomas Scoop | Scoop.it
Marco Polo called Sri Lanka “the finest island of its size in all the world” when he landed on the teardrop-shaped isle’s shores in the 13th century. Similar superlatives could easily be applied today to the country, where new resorts stretch from the palm-fringed shores of the west and south to the wild nature reserves of the east.

On the shores of Koggala Lake, the 11-room Tri Lanka (trilanka.com) opened in December with a restaurant helmed by the former chef at Seychelles’ North Island. Also in December, roughly an hour’s drive east, Àni Villas (anivillas.com)—a vacation-rental company based in Anguilla—debuted a two-villa estate above a white-sand beach in the Southern Province. The 15-bedroom property offers guests absolute privacy in a tranquil coastal village near Dickwella, along with resort-style amenities such as an ayurvedic spa and tennis courts.

This year’s openings include Sri Lanka’s first wellness resort—the 50-acre Santani (santani.lk), which is slated to debut in February in the Kandy hills—as well as the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort (anantara.com) on the southern coast and Dilmah Tea’s Wild Coast Camp (resplendentceylon.com), a 28-tent leopard-safari lodge set on a secluded beach in Yala National Park. Dilmah is also adding a new three-suite bungalow and a one-bedroom owner’s suite to its Ceylon Tea Trails (teatrails.com), an exquisite Relais & Châteaux property above Castlereagh Lake in Sri Lanka’s tea country.

Linking all these new havens are freshly paved highways—an ongoing undertaking since the end of the country’s 26-year civil war in 2009. Faster still are the open skies traversed by the Colombo-based Simplifly’s (simplifly.com) fleet of helicopters and seaplanes.

This article shows us how technology can help us as teachers in our classes, this is a medium that is easy to use and accessible to people. Teachers who are afraid or do not want to use these means to carry out their classes may seek to help a classmate to guide them and show them how this can help them in view of the fact that today technology is in our day to day. It may be that in the beginning it is not easy to operate these devices, but with these 5 ways that the article shows us will be a little easier to learn how to handle them.
Sebastián Vásquez's curator insight, December 4, 5:54 PM
Part of the reflection about the way technology can make part of our academic and learning lives should not stay only in how to implement it but also on how to spread the word and the ideas which come with it. Although technology is nowadays given much more importance  than before, there are still many teachers who refuse to get involved by this amazing field. That is why there is also the need to raise awareness not only in students to use technology in different and diverse ways but also to teachers. If we make it meaningful for teachers to appreciate technology as a tool rich in possibilities and not as an impossible language to speak, it would also be a new possibility for creating discussion and enhance learning practices.

"The day that Jack and Ava were born, we had nothing. No baby shower, no cribs, no names…they were born a little over two and a half months early. We spent 69 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit…and had time to get all the essentials together before they came home. Because New Jersey has paid family leave, we were able to focus on their needs for the first six months, and didn’t have to worry about losing a paycheck." —Jason Butkowski, a New Jersey dad, on how paid leave made a huge difference for his family

WORLDWIDE: More aquaculture production needed to feed a growing and urbanizing world

WORLDWIDE: More aquaculture production needed to feed a growing and urbanizing world | Simon Thomas Scoop | Scoop.it

Combined technological intensification needs to be sustainable and environmentally sound

Bangkok, Thailand – 2 October 2014 – Six countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the world’s largest consumer of fish products, have come together to draft a work plan on the sustainable intensification of aquaculture for ‘blue growth,’ the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), announced today.

Representatives from the Governments of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam are working with FAO global and regional fishery and aquaculture experts in the development of an FAO regional initiative to enhance production of aquaculture in an environmentally sound and sustainable way – “blue growth.”

“Rapid GDP growth and rapid urbanization in Asia and the Pacific are resulting in a rapid change in dietary habits,” said Hiroyuki Konuma, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. “This has resulted in a growing demand for high-value protein-rich foods like meat and fish.”

FAO predicts that increase in demand will continue well into the foreseeable future as socio-economic changes and increased urbanization keep pace. Citing research by UNDP, Konuma indicated that the percentage of middle income earners in Asia-Pacific would triple by 2020 (from 2009) and would grow six-fold by 2030, exponentially increasing demand for fish consumption, “especially in China, India and Indonesia,” he added.

In order to keep up, FAO predicts Asian aquaculture production will need to increase by more than 60 percent to meet the projected consumption demand by 2030 -- just to meet the demand in Asia. The region already accounts for 90 percent of global aquaculture production and 50 percent of present global consumption.

Aquaculture will increasingly provide fish to satisfy global demand

Based on the past trends of aquaculture in different regions, Asia is expected to make a major contribution to meet such increased global demand for fish through further aquaculture growth. China and many other nations are increasing their investments in aquaculture to help meet this growing demand.

The fastest growth in production will likely be species of tilapia, carp, and catfish – all of which are freshwater species in the Asia-Pacific region and produced in considerable quantities. Global tilapia production is expected to almost double from 4.3 million tons to 7.3 million tons a year between 2010 and 2030.

Aquaculture will provide close to two thirds of global food fish consumption by 2030 as catches from wild capture fisheries level off.

“There is a clear need to intensify aquaculture but it must be sustainable, environmentally sound and socially acceptable,” said Konuma during opening remarks at this two-day inception workshop. “FAO is supporting each country with its own initiatives in blue growth strategies and workplans,” he said, adding that the aim of this workshop is to develop workplans and have them in place by March or April next year in advance of FAO’s biannual Conference in Rome, Italy in June 2015.
