Enabling patient compliance-A synergy of human factors engineering and industrial design

"Inherent and perceived usability

The issues contributing to patient noncompliance can generally be segregated into inherent usability and perceived usability. Inherent usability is the actual efficiency of the man-machine interface to mitigate potential use-error risks ,while enabling an expected outcome. Perceived usability is a user’s predisposition to a device’s apparent ease of use, efficiency, and elegance of experience. Studies have shown that inherent usability is sometimes unable to overcome perceived usability even after actual use. Perceived usability is most affected by the first visceral impression of the device—its aesthetics."

Wearing a Computer Is Good for You - Technology Review

Wearing a Computer Is Good for You - Technology Review | shubush healthwear | Scoop.it
Fitness trends and health-care problems are creating demand for tiny computers we won't even notice we're carrying.

'The primary goal, however, is invisibility. "You have wearable products right now—they're just not that wearable," he says. "And you have to remember to wear them." He thinks a health monitoring device should be unobtrusive enough to be incorporated into something you already wear or carry every day: socks, bra, undershirt, cell phone, wallet, keys.

That goal has brought Vu into the world of high-tech fashion. At a recent conference on smart fabrics, he mingled with designers and textile engineers making clothes that light up with fiber optics or heat and cool themselves. Vu believes the textile world could ultimately contribute more creative innovation to wearable computing than device companies do. "Those folks are thinking about clothing and about stuff you're already wearing," he says. "Not 'How can we strap this thing to your body?'"

Shubush comment: Interesting article and Vu raises some good points. However invisibility has often been the goal of wearable medical device designers - and is not always successful. Intersting that Vu himself wears a wearable medical device himself on his face (his glasses) and doesnt mention any problem of visibility or forgetting to wear them. It is also about the 'meaning' of an artefact or product that allows the wearer to become 'attached' to it.
