HCISD widens security efforts
Valley morning Star
Staff, faculty and administrators are trained on what to do if someone gets inside a school and starts shooting. The district also holds drills on what to do if there's an intruder on campus.

“In the morning of course everything’s open,” Tapia said. “The kids are coming in and so forth, but once the bell rings and everyone’s in school, those electronic locks are activated and they’re locked down.”

Now if a visitor shows up at an elementary school without a swipe card, that visitor will have to press a button. A voice from a speaker will ask the visitor to identify him or herself and why he or she wants to enter the school.

“If it’s OK they’ll press a button, it unlocks a door and they’ll let you in,” Tapia said. “And if you don’t get approved you can’t come into the campus. So that’s something that we didn’t have before.”

"I think it's a great idea. I don't see anything wrong with it what-so-ever,” said Trish Blevins, of Argyle. "I just think it's very important for us to be aware of the situation and what could happen and I like the fact knowing that there's somebody in the school that can take action."

The candidate said if the gun law changes were put into effect the day before 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December 2012, it would have not have done anything to stop those slayings.
