The Estimated total number of guns held by civilians in Australia is 3,050,000 to 3500,000, the total number of deaths resulting from firearms in 2010 was 224, in 2011 was 188. Would be interesting to know why most of these Australian feel they need to have firearms?

In the past, these accidents have been investigated, the Firearm Safety Codes are in place for a reason. Why was this weapon loaded?

Lynne Thompson's insight:

The most important thing on the agenda should have been safety. It's not the same as a footy match where you can jump in front of the goals to stop a player scoring, maybe not a safe idea to be in the line of fire.

In Victoria and most states the age children can apply for a firearm weapon is 12-17yrs, most children in Victorian schools shoot competition - Clay Target Shooting. First they have to pass the Victorian Firearm Safety Course and then can shoot under supervision. These children can also hunt under the supervision of a licensed adult!

So Lynne ... is it like a learner's permit for driving where the adult supervising the driving is deemed to be doing the driving in terms of insurance etc., i.e. the supervisor is still in charge of the car
Lynne Thompson's comment, March 2, 2014 1:32 AM
That's correct Yvonne, in this case the 14yr old boy was not charged by police, but no mention of his adult supervisor ! the adult responsible for Health and Safety in this situation. It isn't mentioned if the protestor(rescuer) was charged for entering the wetland illegally before 10am. As I am reading about this topic I am amazed at the lack of safety, for example- safety issues from concerned early morning walkers who use a lake bridge each morning in an area where duck hunters were present, the bridge was still open to the public when Duck Season began.

What is wrong with these parents ? It is suggested in this article that guns in the home be locked and kept unloaded !!! In Australia this is the law in America it is suggested ? Insane !! Einstein these people need help !
Lynne Thompson's comment, March 14, 2014 8:11 PM
Einstein -"Insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" Americans witness the same thing year after year, children are being killed accidently by adults or by other children, ruining the lives of children and entire families. Americans continue to store their firearms in the same manner: loaded and in easy reach. Unless they change the safety standards in American they will continue to have the same results.

I thought this only happened in America where Health and Safety when it comes to firearms doesn't exist ! The 48yr old man was responsible for the Health and Safety of 2 young boys, how did the hunting party become divided? with 2 young boys in the same paddock would you fire at a rabbit if you did not know the whereabouts of the boys ? I wouldn't fire at a cute rabbit anyway ! but looking at the Firearm Safety Code - be sure of your target and what's beyond it before firing. The Health and Safety codes are there because these accidents have happened before. The 48yr old man is responsible and has not followed code.

Maybe Firearm Safety Codes need to be revisited every year for shooters who hold a license?
