Nationwide curriculum to end free-for-all in English teacher training - The Japan Times

Nationwide curriculum to end free-for-all in English teacher training - The Japan Times | Shinshu JALT | Scoop.it
Fed up with the low English proficiency of the many educators who teach the language, the education ministry decides to standardize the curriculum for training courses in universities.
Jim George's insight:

Wonder what this means locally.

IMHO millions wasted on JET Programme; at least achieve reciprocity & send matching number JHS/HS teachers of English overseas - early in their careers, and require a globally recognised level of English AND a globally recognised qualification of teaching the language. Before they start work.

EIKEN? What a total waste of time, and an inadequate/inappropriate measure of competence in the language. Universities thereafter do not teach undergraduates to teach a foreign language.

And who teach the teachers? Not teacher trainers, but at best, PhDs with their own research agendas. Which universities in this country run a dedicated TEFL course for would be teachers?

Conference rage: 'How did awful panel discussions become the default format?' | Shinshu JALT | Scoop.it
A badly run conference is not only a lost opportunity, but is a waste of money and time. How can we improve them?
Jim George's insight:
It's all about the planning - and getting the right people involved early...and getting the wrong people uninvolved. Retain institutional memory and act on feedback. Aggressive abstract proposal reviewing, iron-clad programme plan, and bin the old-boy routines. And stop d'offing the sodding academic cap to ye wise old men on the conference circuit. Talent spot new blood & empower them, and let rip on SMS.

Case study is PanSIG.
