The Quadrivium

The Quadrivium | Shimer College | Scoop.it

The Quadrivium

Imagine yourself in a strange land and you must climb 13 steps up a staircase and then jump into a pool of slime. Your first step is one foot off the ground, and subsequent steps are proportional to Bach's well-tempered tuning method in that each step up is equal to your current height times 2 to the 1/12 power. When you get to the 13th step, how high off the ground would you be?

blog.shimer: Continuing Madness: Where have you been, Manda???

blog.shimer: Continuing Madness: Where have you been, Manda??? | Shimer College | Scoop.it

On top of all of this, I’ve been working my hardest to learn about some pretty difficult topics in my classes. Currently, I’m struggling to grasp the ideas behind two economic standpoints. We read Smith and Marx in my Social Sciences class, and while I still don’t quite understand Marx, I sympathise much more with his ideas of estranged labour. Smith’s idea that the beggar is just as secure as the king kind of alienated me from his main point. Natural Sciences has been difficult as we try to approach the idea of how heat is equivalent to energy (vis viva), and how compounds have electrochemical properties that we can use to describe their base parts (Berzelius).

blog.shimer: Break for a Semester

In the world of politics my Shimer education has been nothing short of magical for me. I'm sure all of you have heard, "Shimer is a place you learn how to think, not what to think." Nothing has made this reality more clear for me than entering into a world I knew very little about. I've learned new skills (whole new areas really) at a pace that is startling for me. I started the season with things like 'script', 'turf', and 'universe' being totally foreign words. I'm now quite comfortable not just with the terminology but the concepts behind them. I've been able to convince people to not just teach me what to do but why they do it that way. I've learned things like when to walk base (friendly voters same party as candidate) and when to walk persuasion (not-so-friendly voters from either party), why we call some universes (consumer-data and voting-data-targeted groups of voters) and walk others. It means that though I started the cycle off knowing nothing about the mechanics of running a campaign or working for a political party, I'm now confident that I'm an asset to the campaigns I work with.

Shimer College - Theater Director Duncan Riddell Premiers New Film at Siskel

Shimer College - Theater Director Duncan Riddell Premiers New Film at Siskel | Shimer College | Scoop.it

Those pricey cocktails just keep coming in this acutely drawn, made-in-Chicago portrait of a clutch of post-college twenty-somethings from a well-heeled northern suburb. Old relationships crash, hook-ups beckon, marriage is an open question, and moving in with the folks remains the eternal option. Privilege meets reality for Henry, Andy, James, Elizabeth, Sophie, and assorted friends stalled in neutral on the journey to adulthood as money, career satisfaction, and love prove elusive. HDCAM video. (BS)

See Gene Siskel Film Center for showtimes.

Duncan Riddell is Director of Theater at Shimer College. Funded in part thought the fundraising flatform Kickstarter, Older Children is written and directed by Riddell.

Shimer College Book Scholarship

Shimer College Book Scholarship | Shimer College | Scoop.it

How would it feel to spend the next year knowing that you’ve been admitted to a unique liberal arts college with an intellectually rigorous curriculum, and a strong community of passionate readers? And knowing that your books will be free?

We can’t promise admission, but because of our small size and individual admission process, we can promise that if you submit a complete application by November 1, 2012 you will have our admission decision by Thanksgiving, and that if you are admitted, you will be awarded a scholarship of at least $1290 to cover your first year's book fee.

The books you'll be given aren't textbooks -- we don't read textbooks at Shimer. All of our books are original sources, and the editions and translations have been carefully selected by our faculty. If the thought of shiny new piles of life-changing books thrills you, Shimer might be your college.

Shimer College - Note from the President

I’m certain Shimerians, wherever they are, will join the relief efforts that have been mobilized to help all those suffering as a result of the disaster. Even as the water begins to recede and the stricken areas begin to recover, many people will require our aid. I urge us to donate blood and to help in whatever way we can by contacting www.redcross.org or other relief organizations.

Extract: A brief introduction to the study of awkwardness - Zero Books Blog

Extract: A brief introduction to the study of awkwardness - Zero Books Blog | Shimer College | Scoop.it

Awkwardness is pervasive, and it’s not limited to television or film: it stalks us everywhere. We watch awkward situations in everyday life as though we’re gaping at a car accident. We are masters at diagnosing it, if not avoiding it. American adolescents, whose unevenly developing bodies give them a hard-won expertise in the topic, are at the forefront here, with their simple exclamation: “Awkward!” There are self-help books for dealing with awkward co-workers, and on weekends and holidays we must deal with the awkwardness of family gatherings, where people united by blood kinship find they can’t exchange even the most innocuous opinions without risking tension—and somehow the very act of withholding one’s views, meant to avoid potential discomfort, itself winds up producing an awkwardness that’s all too actual.

Even by its very act of dying, then, my DVD player managed to bring awkwardness into my life, and it is to that faithful DVD player that I dedicate this book.

Shimer College - Letter from the President

Dear Shimerians:

Three months since my official arrival at Shimer and with the fall Board meeting about to take place, the fall is in full swing. While we are missing those who are in Oxford this semester, our classrooms are abuzz with debate, and those of us on campus have been engaged in imagining and reimagining Shimer. In addition to the reports offered below about various aspects of our work, there is other exciting news to share ranging from smaller to more significant changes.
