Sheffield - a future sustainable city to be proud of

Sheffield - a future sustainable city to be proud of | Sheffield - Sustainable City of the Future | Scoop.it

I live in Sheffield. I am not from Sheffield originally, but having moved here 7 years ago, with some trepidation initially it must be said, I've since grown to love the city and the surrounding area. I can, however, see some major issues, but these are also major improvement opportunities that could not only improve the lives of those of us living, working and playing here, but to also ‘future proof’ our environment and infrastructure, resulting in a city that has a healthy and happy populous, is vibrant and is fully sustainable and has a reduced impact on the environment.

The city centre of Sheffield today is ‘tired’ to say the least. Yes, there are pockets of the city that have had some money thrown at it, but, if we’re honest, Sheffield has suffered from years and years of mismanagement, lack of funding and a lack of vision. It is a great city, but it could be so much more.  The people of Sheffield are proud, but they deserve more.  They want a city that they can be proud of, that they want to show off to the world.

My hope is that given the opportunity, Sheffield could become the first true green, sustainable, and technologically advanced city in the UK. It could become a place where new ‘green’ (building, transport, energy, etc.) technologies are deployed and tested, where a new highly skilled workforce is built from scratch, and it becomes a ‘Green City’ template that can be rolled out to other cities throughout the UK and across the globe. The opportunities are endless if the vision is realised, but it needs for us to think big, to be creative, to be brave, and to want the change. It needs for our local and national Government to invest in Sheffield, for businesses, both large and small to be attracted to the area and for them to also provide investment and the knowledge to help roll out the solutions that will create the new sustainable Sheffield.

I have set-up this Scoop.it magazine in the hope that it generates ideas of the possibilities and to get some discussion on the topic. Hopefully, it will get people excited about a change in Sheffield, it will get those best placed to instigate that change enthused and to realise the potential benefits and long term potential returns. Here’s hoping for a bright, green, sustainable future for Sheffield. I hope you enjoy…

Energy gap? The UK’s use has actually fallen | Letters | Sheffield - Sustainable City of the Future | Scoop.it
Letters: This has occurred without any sustained drive to reduce consumption levels. Just think what we could achieve if we really pushed energy efficiency
Sustainable Sheffield's insight:
It's a no brainer! Increased focus on insulation and power saving technology at point of use will see the demand for power fall and, therefore, reduce the need for huge amounts of new power generation to be constructed.

Finland makes a move towards sustainable future

Finland makes a move towards sustainable future | Sheffield - Sustainable City of the Future | Scoop.it
Finland makes a move towards sustainable future Share Istockphoto.com / Marcus Lindström Finland has announced it is reducing its dependency on fossil import fuels by half and is banning the use of coal in power generation by 2030. This would make Finland the first industrialised country in the world to ban coal power. “We are making a determined move towards a cleaner energy system in Finland,” says the minister of foreign trade and development Kai Mykkänen. “This has required a total shift in our thinking of what could and should be the sources of energy and how our transportation and power system should be structured.” The target to reduce import oil will bring massive reductions in emissions. Both of the measures create room for investment in renewable energies. Decreasing the amount of import oil will also require significant changes in the whole transport system. The strategy foresees 250 000 electric cars – or a tenth of the country’s car fleet – on Finnish roads by 2030. Determined measures will be taken to change the transportation system as a whole to create a more service-based mobility and easier access to public transport. A 30 per cent increase in the use of bikes and walking is included. The 250 000 electric cars will not suffice to ensure Finland will reach its greenhouse gas target of 39 per cent, to which it is committed under the overall EU effort to reduce emission. Therefore, the Finnish government has decided to increase the share of biofuels blended in liquid fuels to 30 per cent by 2030. “There are many biofuel refinery investments being planned in Finland now,” Mykkänen points out. “As raw materials these would use waste and side-products of the forest industry, which cannot be used for the production of more value-added wood-derived products such as pulp, paper, logs for houses or modern wood-based composite materials.” The minister of economic affairs Olli Rehn agrees with Mykkänen’s view of the future. “We are facing a global and fundamental change in energy economics,” Rehn says. “We are building a lasting bridge to fully emission-free and carbon neutral energy economics in Finland in 2050.”
Sustainable Sheffield's insight:
Well done Finland! Fossil fuels are the past and we need to keep them in the ground.
