Pambazuka - Chinua Achebe’s ten teachable lessons

Pambazuka - Chinua Achebe’s ten teachable lessons | Share Some Love Today | Scoop.it

Achebe’s father was raised as a devout Christian by his own uncle who was a titled practitioner of Odinani (Igbo religion). No Christian or Muslim would be tolerant enough to raise a family member in African traditional religion today. Most reviewers of Achebe’s book so far have missed the significance of this foundational thesis of Achebe in ‘There Was A Coutry’.

The Rise of EDM | Music Business Journal | Berklee College of Music

The Rise of EDM | Music Business Journal | Berklee College of Music | Share Some Love Today | Scoop.it

The Rise of EDM by Danny Feinstein and Colin Ramsay

Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is surging to the forefront of mainstream tastes. If you have turned on the radio, watched TV, or attended a music festival in the last several years you have likely noticed DJs and producers flooding the market. Acts like Skrillex, Deadmau5, and David Guetta have emerged from the EDM movement and achieved international popularity on an unprecedented level.

EDM has only recently stepped into the spotlight. The genre, however, is hardly young. It began as an underground movement in the 1980s. Similarly to how hip-hop crossed over into the mainstream in the late 1990s and 2000s, EDM is now coming of age, and in a big way. A generation of music fans are shifting their musical gaze from the hip-hop driven popular music that dominated the 2000s, to the polished sounds of house, trance, dubstep, glitch, breaks, and the dozens of other sub-genres that fall under the umbrella of EDM.
It is also important to note the role of social media in catalyzing the growth of EDM. For a genre so inherently tied to technology, the Internet is a natural marketing platform. Tech-savvy producers and DJs unsurprisingly flourish in the online space. Danny Whittle, brand director of dance club Pacha notes, “Our musical genre embraced the Internet, all other genres fought it.”6 As the digital music space continues to expand, EDM arguably harnesses the Internet’s potential more effectively than other genres.

DJs were early adopters of the free music model, recognizing that their low cost of touring made live appearances the more lucrative revenue stream. As a result they won the hearts of legions of fans that most likely would have pirated their music anyways. The strength of the EDM online culture has even led to one of the very few successful alternatives, albeit genre-specific, to iTunes: Beatport. Beatport is a popular music store specifically for DJs that provides digital music formats and music discovery tools.

Jacob Stoll's curator insight, December 3, 2014 7:11 PM

EDM was started underground in the late 1980s, similar to hip hop. Today, fans are moving their attention from hip hop based beats to EDM, dub step, or trap music. As time has gone on, performers have come to find that when performing with a DJ backing them up, they had more revenue. Eventually singular DJs emerged as performers, like Skrillex and DeadMau5. The rapid growth of EDM culture is steadily growing and I would hate not hearing those hard kicks and scratches of real hip hop.

Internet of food: Arduino-based, urban aquaponics in Oakland

It's called aquaponics- a gardening system that combines hydroponics (water-based planting) and aquaculture (fish farming). It's been hailed as the future of farming: it uses less water (up to 90% less than traditional gardening), doesn't attract soil-based bugs and produces two types of produce (both plants and fish).

Aquaponics has become popular in recent years among urban gardeners and DIY tinkerers, but Maundu- who is trained in industrial robotics- has taken the agricultural craft one step further and made his gardens smart. Using sensors (to detect water level, pH and temperature), microprocessors (mostly the open-source Arduino microcontroller), relay cards, clouds and social media networks (Twitter and Facebook), Maundu has programmed his gardens to tweet when there's a problem (i.e. not enough water) or when there's news (i.e. an over-abundance of food to share).
Maundu himself ran from agriculture in his native Kenya- where he saw it as a struggle for land, water and resources. This changed when he realized he could farm without soil and with little water via aquaponics and that he could apply his robotics background to farming.

Today he runs Kijani Grows ("Kijani" is Swahili for green), a small startup that designs and sells custom aquaponics systems for growing food and attempts to explore new frontiers of computer-controlled gardening. Maundu believes that by putting gardens online, especially in places like West Oakland (where his solar-powered gardens are totally off the grid), it's the only way to make sure that farming remains viable to the next generation of urban youth.

Dado and his Dice Game: Graffiti of Italy

Dado and his Dice Game: Graffiti of Italy | Share Some Love Today | Scoop.it
This was written by our friends over at Global Street Art.

Northern Italy is well-known for the refined quality of its graffiti, unlike the south which is better known for its more hardcore bombing graffiti scene. Dado (meaning ‘dice’ in Italian) is a great example of the refinement that takes years of dedication. His smooth ribbon-like forms look like they could float from the walls they’re painted on! His attention to the effects of light on shapes is staggering and our interview has been a long time coming!

6 Bodily Tissues That Can Be Regenerated Through Nutrition

6 Bodily Tissues That Can Be Regenerated Through Nutrition | Share Some Love Today | Scoop.it
Are you aware of the six bodily tissues that can be regenerated through nutrition?

It may come as a surprise to some, especially those with conventional medical training, but the default state of the body is one of ceaseless regeneration. Without the flame-like process of continual cell turnover within the body – life and death ceaselessly intertwined – the miracle of the human body would not exist.

In times of illness, however, regenerative processes are overcome by degenerative ones. This is where medicine may perform its most noble feat, nudging the body back into balance with foods, herbs, nutrients, healing energies, i.e. healing intention. Today, however, drug-based medicine invariably uses chemicals that have not one iota of regenerative potential; to the contrary, they almost always interfere with bodily self-renewal in order to suppress the symptoms against which they are applied.

Despite the outright heretical nature of things which stimulate healing and regeneration vis-à-vis the conventional medical system which frowns upon, or is incredulous towards, spontaneous remission in favor of symptom suppression and disease management, over the course of the past few years of trolling MEDLINE we have collected a series of remarkable studies on the topic...

Genetic Roulette - The Gamble of our Lives [Video 1h 25min]

Are you and your family on the wrong side of a bet?

When the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GM) crops into our environment and food supply, it was a gamble of unprecedented proportions. The health of all living things and all future generations were put at risk by an infant technology.

After two decades, physicians and scientists have uncovered a grave trend. The same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GM foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their health improves...
