Dating apps like Momo represent generational shift in attitudes to love

Dating apps like Momo represent generational shift in attitudes to love | Shanghai lifestyle, a day in China's city of life and style | Scoop.it
Increasing numbers of mainlanders are using services such as Momo to find sexual partners, but websites seek ways to hook users for longer
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

If ONS and NSA hook ups are now trendy and fine, that means that Chinese modern society is fast evolving to redefine some fundamentals that many believe to be deeply rooted in traditions and customs. What if the roots are shakier than initialy thought? 80 million users is little figure compared to total population. However, with a population shift from country side to cities in the next 20 years, that proportion might drastically change as well.

China Cracks Down on Celebrity Endorsements

China Cracks Down on Celebrity Endorsements | Shanghai lifestyle, a day in China's city of life and style | Scoop.it
Celebrity endorsements, used correctly, were once a potent weapon for brands in China, and a great payday for the stars that were featured.

But SCMP reports that there is now a risk for celebrities who endorse bad brands.
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

Marketers across the country will have to think harder on how to sell products and services based only on celebrity endorsement. I hate repeating myself but looks like things are actually changing.

Jean Zimmermann's insight:
So in the 90's Chongqing was supposed to be come the Chicago of China, the inland major city to surpass or equal the east coast cities, as described in my friend Joe Studwell's China Dream published in 2002. Looks like after all and almost 15 years later, the prize goes to Chengdu! We're proud at Ba Yan Ka La to be a partner of Ritz Carlton Hotel's Spa. My guess would be that lifestyle and taste after all still trump pure money, even in China.

Building a new customer base as tastes evolve - major challenge in China for luxury - CPP-LUXURY

Building a new customer base as tastes evolve - major challenge in China for luxury - CPP-LUXURY | Shanghai lifestyle, a day in China's city of life and style | Scoop.it
Gildo Zegna, CEO of luxury menswear giant Ermenegildo Zegna , said at the recently held International New York Times South East Asia Luxury Conference that one of the biggest challenges in China is building a new customer base as tastes evolve.
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

”The Chinese consumer is now demanding, knowledgeable, savvy, sophisticated and also very price-conscious. There is sensitivity around appearing too ostentatious. Brands must be aware of this.”

It seems more and more people start to agree on this. So where are the new concepts? Where are the new ideas? Where are the new brands? Might China be the answer?

Hospitality Net - Today’s Modern Guests Want Life Experiences Not Luxuries - Hotels Must Adapt, Urges HVS London Study

Hospitality Net - Today’s Modern Guests Want Life Experiences Not Luxuries - Hotels Must Adapt, Urges HVS London Study | Shanghai lifestyle, a day in China's city of life and style | Scoop.it
Hotels are in danger of failing to adapt to a new breed of guest whose needs and demands are entirely different to those of previous generations.
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

Is your hotel property boring and obsolete yet?

Change, change, change... I keep talking about the need to keep moving together with the market and keep being given brand new photos of brand new hotel rooms that look like they did 15 years ago. Same room agencement, same principle of big reception desk with no staff where you have to wait for 20mins for check in or check out, same bathtub nobody ever uses and occupies huge space in the tiny bathroom, same towels that are too small and too rough, same boring obscure Guangdong Huizhou made bad quality formula with a luxury name  and that smells like green apple of synthetic green tea to shower with.

Guests want to experience something different, eat something different, shower with something different. The world is already getting smaller fast enough, who cares to travel around the world to find the same things they already have at home?

Premium skincare has never looked so good | Trends | Marketing Week | Shanghai lifestyle, a day in China's city of life and style | Scoop.it
The rise in sales of prestige skincare products, especially among men, is creating online and offline opportunities.
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

Change is the only constant in  the universe... I grew up at a time men used to go work while women stayed at home taking care of the kids, cooking and keep the household. Today i have quite a few friends around me, male, staying at home, caring for the kids, coocking and waiting for their working wifes to come back from work every evening. The younger Chinese generation of urban female hardly know how to cook or keep a household. So it sounds very logical in fact that men start to take care of themselves more and more. As women become more independent, pressure to remain attractive should increase for male anyway!

Jean Zimmermann's insight:

The sceptics will always question the absence of serious medical studies on the actual effects of planting needles on one's thumb to improve eye vision, or to plan an even longer needle deep into the ankle in order to releave back pain. Yet, there is something there that should not be underestimated and that has captivated many and might captivate even more as health care costs rise and as general health deteriorates. With twice as more obsese people than starving ones on the planet, we should stop accepting the status quo and dare accepting that there is still more to learn.

Jean Zimmermann's insight:
Looks like between now and 2020, not much is going to happen in the world of skyscraper. Of course plenty towers will be built and scrape the clouds, but seems that 1,000m is the limit for now. And the Shanghai Tower, the city's tallest building still under construction, will then only be the 5th tallest building in the world. But it's probably not over yet, as it's a game of male pride to be the host country of the world's tallest building. Did someone say the word phallic symbol of pride? Have humans really changed much in 2,000 years?

Jean Zimmermann's insight:

Another piece on China's booming internet market and it's potential which is not wrong but this article is missing a fundamental piece of information: Internet penetration is low for computers indeed, but mobile internet is now dominant in the country. Even in the country side, everybody is using smartphones and very sophisticated apps for mobile internet. It takes 3 clicks to order a popular fastfood meal with an Iphone here! Oh, but wait, it's all in Chinese, so non Chinese language speakers might not even realize yet the revolution that is taking place. Ignorance is bliss they say, i'm not so sure about that.

Burberry appeals as China cancels tartan trademark

Company challenges loss of protection after trademark office rules that company has not been using pattern in China
Jean Zimmermann's insight:

Give me your watch, i'll tell you what time of the day it is!

Back in the early 90's we used to joke about doing business here. Yet there should be not doubt that as China's economic powers grow, it will do anything it can to promote the growth and incubation of local brands against the benefits of foreign players. With the current figures of the number of Chinese tourist buying luxury goods overseas and the dollar amount it represents, that kind of move against a big luxury brand name in the local market cannot hurt and will give room to local concepts to rise quickly...

And my take is, this is just beginning...
