Near-Death Experiences, Shamanism, and the Scientific Method

By J. Timothy Green, Ph.D.

ABSTRACT: In the past 20 years, the field of near-death studies has thoroughly documented the existence of this phenomenon. The field now appears to be evolving from a purely academic one to include an applied, clinical component. I discuss the overlap between shamanism and near-death experiences (NDEs) and suggest that the study of shamanism would be add to our understanding of NDEs and help with the development of an applied methodology. Although it may be difficult to verify subjective accounts of NDEs and shamanic journeys, from a purely clinical standpoint, it is necessary to do so in order to utilize a clinical methodology based on spiritual principles.

Thousand-hand Bodhisattva dance《千手观音》

The bewitching performance of Thousand-hand Bodhisattva dance performed at the 2005 CCTV Spring Festival Gala by 21 hearing impaired girls and boys.

From Wikipedia: In Buddhism, a bodhisattva (Sanskrit: बोधिसत्त्व bodhisattva; Pali: बोधिसत्त bodhisatta) is either an enlightened (bodhi) existence (sattva) or an enlightenment-being or, given the variant Sanskrit spelling satva rather than sattva, "heroic-minded one (satva) for enlightenment (bodhi)." The Pali term has sometimes been translated as "wisdom-being,"[1] although in modern publications, and especially in tantric works, this is more commonly reserved for the term jñānasattva ("awareness-being"; Tib. ཡེ་ཤེས་སེམས་དཔའ་་, Wyl. ye shes sems dpa’). Traditionally, a bodhisattva is anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.[2]

Ancient traditions get new life Like Davidson, many people are discovering the benefit of plant-based psychedelic substances such as aya-huasca, psilocybin or ibogaine, a derivative of the bark of the West African iboga shrub. These powerful psychotropics are used to uncover painful memories and, in a ritualistic setting, spark a catharsis.

In the Valley of the Soul

In the Valley of the Soul | Shamanism in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

From Reality Sandwich: "What is the connection between shamanism and love? Why do we Westerners tend to guru-ize the shaman, often identifying them with saints? How do we reconcile our fantasies of what the shaman is or should be with what is often a very different reality? In this excerpted conversation, researcher-authors Stephan Beyer, Stanley Krippner, and Hillary S. Webb discuss some of the ramifications of the Western world's intellectual and spiritual fascination with shamanic practices."

Religion or not religion – a discourse analysis of shamanism

Religion or not religion – a discourse analysis of shamanism | Shamanism in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

"In the study of indigenous religions, one of the issues a scholar faces is the gap between self-representation and scholarly classification, particularly with regard to the concept of ‘religion’. So how does the scholar of religion approach this issue? Shamanism is an interesting example, one which illustrates this problem, as this term was also coined by scholars, derived from one group in Siberia and applied cross-culturally to others, which then influenced diverse peoples to adopt the term when describing their traditions to outsiders, often in distinction to what is regarded as ‘religion’."  by author Suzanne Owen

Susun Weed, Herbalist

Susun Weed, Herbalist | Shamanism in the 21st Century | Scoop.it
Susun Weed is one of the best-known authorities on herbal medicine in North America.

From the Singing to the Plants blog:  Amazonian shamanism is, among other things, a form of herbal medicine. People who focus on the healing and transformative powers of ayahuasca may sometimes overlook the sheer size of the shamanic pharmacopoeia and the role that plant medicines play in healing. But to understand curanderismo in the Amazon, we have to understand these healing plants — their selection, preparation, indications, and application.
