Just Sign on The Dotted Line- The Anti-Prostitution Loyalty Oath

"Just Sign on The Dotted Line: The Anti Prostitution Loyalty Oath" narrated by Cosi Fabian, presents a history of a policy regulating provision of foreign aid. The policy requires that recipients of USAID funds sign an oath that they will not support sex workers' rights. This policy is a telling example of how the U.S. exports repressive ideologies through conditions set for foreign aid recipients.

Compiled for all those interested in sex workers issues and human rights, this video timeline and accompanying resources provide a comprehensive course in the history of, and resistance to "The Pledge."

Gaynor Johansen's comment, March 29, 5:56 PM
I think that the article brings up some good points. The sex trafficking victims, voluntary or not, should be protected and helped. Government funding is probably the only way they would be able to get any programs for that so not allowing government funding would hurt the people that were victimized.

Teenagers may not have the full capacity to consent or bear as full a responsibility for their actions as adults do, but they're not mentally incapacitated. The government shouldn't be able to lock up a 15-year-old girl 'til her 18th birthday to stop her from having sex in a way of which it disapproves.

ICASO | Sign on to condemn the treatment of Alejandra Gil and her son Omar Sayun Gil under Mexico’s new anti-trafficking law

ICASO | Sign on to condemn the treatment of Alejandra Gil and her son Omar Sayun Gil under Mexico’s new anti-trafficking law | Sex Work | Scoop.it

We condemn the treatment of Alejandra Gil and her son Omar Sayun Gil under Mexico’s new anti-trafficking law, which conflates sex work and trafficking, and their treatment since their arrest.

We understand that Alejandra Gil and her son Omar Sayun Gil have been charged with the serious offence of human trafficking, and that they remain in custody. Alejandra Gil is the founder of APROASE, an organization that offers sliding scale health services to street-based sex workers in Mexico City. Her son, Omar, supports her in some these efforts. Alejandra Gil was working to develop a rights-based anti-trafficking tool for use with sex workers, which is important in Mexico, where a new anti-trafficking law has been passed. In other countries where anti-trafficking laws have been passed, we have seen the adverse effects of overly broad focus on sex work lead to arrests and detentions of sex workers and people who work with them.

We the undersigned are concerned at the conflation of sex work with human trafficking, and with the lack of due process afforded the Gils.

Sex Law Expert Belinda Brooks-Gordon: Why the Nordic Model of Prostitution Does Not Work

Sex Law Expert Belinda Brooks-Gordon: Why the Nordic Model of Prostitution Does Not Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Speaking to IBTimes UK, Brooks-Gordon said: "Any law has to be based on some philosophy or evidence, for example, harm is one – the reason murder or theft is a crime is because they cause demonstrable harm. There is no reason to criminalise prostitution clients when you cannot show demonstrable harm. In fact all the evidence is in the other direction, that it is harmful to criminalise."

Well-Read On The Subject Of Sex Work

Well-Read On The Subject Of Sex Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I know many of you who read here are, or have been, sex workers. Myself included, of course. We consider ourselves to be sex positive feminists who want sex work to be recognized and respected as work. Most of us believe it should be decriminalized, if not completely legal, even if  we often disagree about how best to achieve those things. But often in our conversions on the subject of (and issues surrounding) sex work, it is clear that many hold onto their own experiences at the expense of seeing the larger picture. Just like those who were harmed come out swinging “against” sex work, we let our feelings color and even cloud our willingness to hear from others.

Gracie Passette's insight:

This essay includes a reading list for those interested in sex work and related issues of debate.

10 myths about prostitution, trafficking and the Nordic model

10 myths about prostitution, trafficking and the Nordic model | Sex Work | Scoop.it

When I followed up with an opinion piece for The Conversation on the success of the Nordic Model, a handful of men, and one prominent Australian feminist , spent hours trading inaccuracies about the Nordic approach to prostitution policy and disparaging anyone stupid enough to think that a booming industry which trades in women’s bodies is anything but inevitable.

These falsities and fabrications will be familiar to anyone who has written or said anything that publicly criticizes the sex industry. The same claims, usually without reference to relevant evidence, are repeated so frequently in certain spheres that they have practically become mantras. If you say it often enough, it becomes true, right?

In the interests of being able to offer more than 140 character responses to these predictable criticisms, here’s a list of responses to the most common myths I’ve had thrown at me.

Gracie Passette's insight:

Excellent reading on both sex work and feminism.

Sex Industry & Sex Workers in Nevada

Sex Industry & Sex Workers in Nevada | Sex Work | Scoop.it

In both legal and illegal form, the sex industry is present in every state in the country. Yet, it is only in Nevada that sex industry is legalized in the form of brothel prostitution. While prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas, the city is internationally recognized as a highly sexualized tourist destination with a flourishing market in commercial sexual entertainment and services.

If the Nevada sex industry affects the state’s social health and its quality of life, it doesn’t do so in a uniform, easy-to-judge manner. The growth of the sex industry or pornoculture in the Silver State has a negative impact where it condones exploitation, oppression, crime, and continued stereotyping and stigmatization of women. The abundance of sexually charged entertainment can have a positive impact when sex workers have a range of viable economic options, when they are not forced into commercial sex against their will, and when Nevada’s tourism-based economy cultivates arenas of safe sexual expression and enjoyment.

There is little reason to think that the broader trends toward more sexualized everyday culture will play out differently in Nevada than in other parts of the country and the world. Las Vegas is likely to remain at the forefront of these cultural shifts and will continue to benefit economically from the current trends. This presents a significant opportunity for Nevada to move to the forefront of the national debate about these cultural trends, and to take the lead as an innovator in policies, programs, and practices that confront head-on the dangers and pitfalls associated with a growing, and most likely inevitable, sex industry in ways that minimize risk and exploitation and maximize safety and empowerment.

Gracie Passette's insight:

An intelligent & pragmatic discussion about the sex industry in terms of society & public policy.

Denver Colorado Police and Attorney General John Suthers are forcing prostitutes to lie against their will about being sex trafficked

Denver Colorado Police and Attorney General John Suthers are forcing prostitutes to lie against their will about being sex trafficked | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Police departments, and the Attorney Generals around the country receive huge grants of money from the Federal government for fighting Sex Trafficking. When they don’t find any forced against their will prostitute victims – They make them up, so that they won’t lose funding.

Denver vice Lieutenant Aaron Sanchez says: “Prostitutes are not friendly. It’s not like you’re talking to a child-abuse victim or a fifteen-year-old sex assault victim who wants to cry out and wants to explain what happened or is just scared. These girls just flat out say, ‘Nope, that’s not what’s happening.’

“We have to help them realize they are victims,” Denver vice Lieutenant Aaron Sanchez says.

So… the police are trying to invent victims? Where no victim exist?
