An Overview of U.S. Efforts to Combat Demand For Prostitution and Trafficking Sex

An Overview of U.S. Efforts to Combat Demand For Prostitution and Trafficking Sex | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Tue, Feb 24, 2015

Most law enforcement operations enforcing prostitution laws are driven by community complaints, and by the role of commercial sex in generating numerous felonies such as aggravated assault, sex and drug trafficking, and negatively impacting neighborhood quality of life. Police in over 1,100 U.S. cities and counties have conducted either street-level or web-based sting operations targeting men buying sex, and courts apply a wide range of criminal and civil penalties to those arrested – including auto seizure, community service, john schools, “dear john” letters, SOAP orders, and driver’s license suspension.

This webinar provides an overview of the 12 major tactics used to combat demand for commercial sex, and an introduction to a website containing resources offering operational information and pragmatic guidance about implementing these tactics.

Attendance is strictly limited to the first 500 who register.

How Will You Use It? New Website Let’s You Rate and Review Police Officers

How Will You Use It? New Website Let’s You Rate and Review Police Officers | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Americans find themselves in a state of flux in 2015. Many people are dealing with the hard reality that those who are sworn to protect and serve, often do the exact opposite.

The topic of police behavior is at the forefront of discussions, worldwide. Market reactions to this interest in responsible application of authority as well as interest in the abuse of authority, are popping up online.

Trying to rely on the system, to report on itself, has proven to be a futile task. In instances of police killings alone, the official method for tallying these deaths was shown to be incredibly skewed and inaccurate.

The unaccountable nature of the state, coupled with today’s network of technologically savvy activists has paved the way for third party accountability sites that are proving to be quite helpful in the struggle for justice.

Up next in the world of answerable innovation is the site CopScore, aptly named for its interface which allows users to submit, “officer performance reviews.”

Anyone can register in a matter of seconds upon going to the site. However, in order to submit a review on an officer, you must know his or her name, department, and title. The form also requires that the registrant specify whether or not the officer arrested them.

If you actually want to post a performance review on CopScore, you will need to sign in and provide the officer’s badge number as well.

The site’s creator, Arion Hardison, explains that he, “put the badge number there because I did not want people posting fake reviews.”

“I wanted only people that had an actual interaction with the Cop to be able to vote,” said Hardison.

Sex Work and the City: Police Confiscate and Destroy Condoms in an Attempt to Rid Prostitution in NYC

Sex Work and the City: Police Confiscate and Destroy Condoms in an Attempt to Rid Prostitution in NYC | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The New York City sex industry isn't glamorous. It's dark, seedy, lurid, and the sex work that the women and, to a lesser degree, men engage in carries the risk of danger, disease, sexual violence, and abduction. There aren't many tools that the sexually exploited demographic can use, but one tool that is at their disposal is condoms. With 50 percent of streetwalkers being African American and 25 percent being Latino, and the average age of a prostitute in the United States being between the ages of 12-14 years old, it's ethnic teenagers who continue to suffer HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases at a high rate -- particularly when police confiscate their condoms, a form harassment that's orchestrated in order to prevent sex workers from turning tricks.

Gracie Passette's insight:

While data on sex work is difficult to come by, this is an interesting look at health, race & discrimination in erms of the laws.

‘It’s just a land-grab,’ says Hollywood star Rupert Everett as he joins protests over closure of legal Soho brothels

‘It’s just a land-grab,’ says Hollywood star Rupert Everett as he joins protests over closure of legal Soho brothels | Sex Work | Scoop.it

HOLLYWOOD actor Rupert Everett joined a group of sex workers in court this week as they protested against the closure of scores of legal brothels in Soho.

Earlier this month 200 police swooped on dozens of businesses in Soho in an attempt to clamp down on the trade of stolen goods. They raided more than 20 “walk-up flats”, where sex workers can legally ply their trade, and have now gone to the courts to seek “closure orders” claiming use of the flats is illegal.

The English Collective of Prostitutes, whose campaign for sex workers’ rights is being supported by Mr Everett, have said that half the flats in Soho have now been closed. Dozens of women have been left without work and are now facing the dangerous prospect of selling sex on the street.

The ECP said the raids “appear to prioritise the interests of property developers and the gentrification of historic Soho for the super-rich, over women’s rights to work in safety and support their families.” It added: “Some women have been discussing working on the street, where it is 10 times more dangerous, because they need money for Christmas.”

Mr Everett – who starred in My Best Friend’s Wedding alongside Julia Roberts – told the West End Extra: “It’s just a land-grab, facilitated by the police. It’s the puritanical sanitisation of London.

Denver Colorado Police and Attorney General John Suthers are forcing prostitutes to lie against their will about being sex trafficked

Denver Colorado Police and Attorney General John Suthers are forcing prostitutes to lie against their will about being sex trafficked | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Police departments, and the Attorney Generals around the country receive huge grants of money from the Federal government for fighting Sex Trafficking. When they don’t find any forced against their will prostitute victims – They make them up, so that they won’t lose funding.

Denver vice Lieutenant Aaron Sanchez says: “Prostitutes are not friendly. It’s not like you’re talking to a child-abuse victim or a fifteen-year-old sex assault victim who wants to cry out and wants to explain what happened or is just scared. These girls just flat out say, ‘Nope, that’s not what’s happening.’

“We have to help them realize they are victims,” Denver vice Lieutenant Aaron Sanchez says.

So… the police are trying to invent victims? Where no victim exist?
