What is life like being a high priced escort?

How much money did you make? What did you use your cash for? What was your education level? Do you consider yourself to be intelligent? Did you have any other options in life? Why did you choose to be an escort? What types of clients did you have? What were the "transactions" like? What did you talk to your clients about? Are your clients rude to you? What do you do now? Was being an escort fulfilling, if so, how? Would you have done it again? What was your childhood like, ie. broken home? What was your socio economic status? Could you write a simple biography as a response to the question?

A "Cheap" Client or Lover

A "Cheap" Client or Lover | Sex Work | Scoop.it
A lesson learned. I just ask myself: how did I resort to him when I had a man who sacrificed his life for the sake of my love? So, as the Kama Sutra advises, “if he is poor and destitute, she should get rid of him as if she had never been acquainted with him in any way before.” In other words, ‘cheap’ men need to be discarded, as they are not worth our time.

Meet the UK’s best-paid sex worker who's campaigning to rid prostitution of its stigma

Meet the UK’s best-paid sex worker who's campaigning to rid prostitution of its stigma | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Josh said there’s a negative attitude towards sex workers. He is now campaigning for the stigma attached to the industry to end. For him, being an escort is just like any regular job.

“It’s the most practiced since the dawn of man so I don’t understand why people have to make such a big deal of it like it’s some sacred cow.

“The only other job you can be in and learn so much about people is being a psychologist.”

The Review: American Courtesans (2013)

The Review: American Courtesans (2013) | Sex Work | Scoop.it

AMERICAN COURTESANS is a documentary collecting interviews with a number of women who work or have worked in the sex trade industry, where they discuss their lives and careers from their childhoods to their current lives as escorts, producers, and activists.  I felt it was a great film, and it did a good job of showing the true face of the industry, good and bad.

The main interviewer is Kristen DiAngelo, who is also interviewed by one of the stars, sharing her own story while supporting others as they tell theirs.  I think this works well because it is honest about the context of the film maker, saying openly that this is her story, just like the other stories, take it as it is.

In the film, the stories of the women are sorted by stages rather than chronologically: childhoods compared, initiations into the industry compared, and so on.  While the ages of the courtesans means the stories happened at different times, the technique works to show how similar and yet different each one is.  Some had abusive parents, others had supportive parents; some had truly horrific introductions to the industry, some had positive experiences.  By the end you see how different they were, as well as how similar the challenges they faced have been.

Prostitution: Fact & Fiction

Prostitution: Fact & Fiction | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The following is taken from a press release received today from the English Collective of Prostitutes. Increasingly, sex workers are being presented as victims who have no control over their lives, and thus the state is urged to step in and “rescue” them – which in practise, means arresting them and preventing them working, publishing their photos in the press to shame them, and deporting them if they are illegal immigrants.

Prostitution Law and the Death of Whores

Prostitution Law and the Death of Whores | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Twenty years ago I first asked two questions that continue to unsettle me today. The first is answerable: What does a woman who sells sex accomplish that leads to her being treated as fallen, beyond the pale, incapable of speaking for herself, discountable if she does speak, invisible as a member of society? The answer is she carries a stigma. The second question is a corollary: Why do most public conversations focus on laws and regulations aimed at controlling these stigmatized women rather than recognizing their agency? To that the answer is not so straightforward.

What I Really Do: The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Sex Workers

What I Really Do: The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Sex Workers | Sex Work | Scoop.it
I am a porn performer, professional escort and Dominatrix, and I have found that most of the world has absolutely no idea what my job is actually like. While my career is inherently rooted in entertainment and fantasy, I am also running three small businesses, facilitating educational workshops and fighting for sex workers rights. For me, my job has a certain sense of normalcy that just happens to be surrounded by high heels, vintage vibrators and lots of glitter. My own perception of my work often fluctuates between: ‘Imma sexual-ninja-genius!’ to ‘This is mega complicated’. Someone did actually create a “What I Really Do” Sex Worker meme. It is pretty amusing, but it really only begins to describe the complicated social perceptions of the world’s oldest profession.

People enter sex work for different reasons and for various amounts of time, and have very individual experiences within the industry. Regardless of varying experiences, society often attaches stigma and shame to our identities. This can be incredibly de-humanizing, which is part of the reason sex workers have historically been the targets of discrimination and violence. Sex work itself is not inherently dangerous – unlike being a deep-sea fisherman, a firefighter or serving in the Marines – the threat only lies in social norms and laws that prevent workers from doing our jobs legally and safely. This has negative ramifications on our health, safety and professional lives. Not being able to account for skills gained as a sex worker can result in undesirable gaps on a resume, prohibit transitions into other career paths and create fear of being outed or fired from vanilla jobs. This is a total shame because sex workers are some of the smartest cats that I know. Most of my colleagues possess an arsenal of branding, marketing and PR, education, website management and creative technical skills that make them highly successful in their chosen field, skills that would easily translate into an array of professional settings. Yet the stigma surrounding “What People Think I Do” constantly affects our ability to be successful and employable.
