Sex work: liberation or exploitation? | The Oxford Student

Sex work: liberation or exploitation? | The Oxford Student | Sex Work | Scoop.it

In 1975, more than one hundred prostitutes occupied a church in Lyon, France, to protest against police repression, issuing statements that they would stay until prison sentences against their members were lifted. The movement for what was then called prostitute’s rights may have been born from demands for sexual freedom, but its own demands were for freedom from police violence.

A cursoring glance at the sex work debate will swiftly reveal that the bulk of those clamouring for its criminalisation do not work within the industry. It is perhaps the near-universality of screwing that means many outside sex work feel they have a right to dictate how those within should be treated—socially, politically and legally. Melissa Gira Grant’s recent novel, Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work, seeks to interrupt a conversation about prostitution that for too long has given primacy those who have never experienced it.

Reading gender: On Gloria Steinem's latest collection of articles | Sex Work | Scoop.it

This is also the Gloria Steinem the world has known for decades now. It’s seen her become an icon for women across the world, changing lives and thought processes. Earlier this week, Steinem released a compilation of her readings, titled “The Essential Gloria Steinem Reader: As if Women Matter”. Published by Rupa in English and Rajkamal publications in Hindi, the reader contains an introduction by Ruchira Gupta, Founder President of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, an NGO that works against sex trafficking. Gupta has also edited the compilation. The book contains a new essay by Steinem on sex trafficking, titled “The Third Way — An End of Trafficking and Prostitution: A Beginning of Mutual Sexuality”, along with other pieces written by the feminist and activist over decades of work with gender and violence. The essays address issues like gender inequality, marginalisation and violence, and approach each question from viewpoint that can be at once universal and context-specific.

"This is a case about greed and self-dealing by Amanda Hayward in conning her business partner Jenny Pedroza out of her rightful partnership interest in advances and royalties flowing from the New York Times best-selling 'Fifty Shades of Grey' trilogy and in fraudulently inducting both plaintiffs into entering into contracts with a sham entity," the 48-page lawsuit begins.

Sex workers’ rights are just workers’ rights

Sex workers’ rights are just workers’ rights | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Sex workers’ rights are workers’ rights and human rights — because sex workers are human beings doing work. That’s why the debate over sex work shouldn’t focus, as it usually does, on whether sex workers are "criminals" or "victims." Instead, sex workers themselves should have agency and a say in the policies that govern their practices.

It’s surprising how controversial those statements are, but they are missing from virtually every discussion of sex work in the United States. The ideas do, however, form the core of Playing the Whore, a fascinating new book on the state of the sex work debates by Melissa Gira Grant. Grant is one of the most interesting policy thinkers in the country when it comes to sex work, and this short book introduces and outlines her thinking on the matter.

The Rest Was Just Imagination - An interview with Lydia Millet

BLVR: Your book Everyone’s Pretty is reportedly based on your time working with LFP. Could you talk about this influence in specific terms? The book doesn’t seem concerned with reporting on or analyzing the pornography industry.

LM: No, that was other people’s bailiwick. To me, mass-produced pornography is excruciatingly boring and the industry only a little less so. I was mostly interested in the styles of neurosis I met there.

Well-Read On The Subject Of Sex Work

Well-Read On The Subject Of Sex Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I know many of you who read here are, or have been, sex workers. Myself included, of course. We consider ourselves to be sex positive feminists who want sex work to be recognized and respected as work. Most of us believe it should be decriminalized, if not completely legal, even if  we often disagree about how best to achieve those things. But often in our conversions on the subject of (and issues surrounding) sex work, it is clear that many hold onto their own experiences at the expense of seeing the larger picture. Just like those who were harmed come out swinging “against” sex work, we let our feelings color and even cloud our willingness to hear from others.

Gracie Passette's insight:

This essay includes a reading list for those interested in sex work and related issues of debate.

How One 65-Year-Old Spent Years Making Porn -- With His Wife's Blessing - Huffington Post

How One 65-Year-Old Spent Years Making Porn -- With His Wife's Blessing - Huffington Post | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Although Gordon toyed with the idea of becoming a rabbi, he ditched it upon discovering he'd have to study Aramaic for two years. After graduating from Antioch College in Ohio in 1970, he met his wife Carly -- who would go on to become a therapist -- and had a different kind of religious experience: "wife at first sight."

But something was missing from Gordon's fairly idyllic existence.

"I had my wife and I had all the love I needed. But sexually speaking, I wanted to explore something else," Gordon, now 65 years old, said. "I wanted to have a sexual experience that had nothing to do with love or relationship. I wanted some sex as 'recreation' and I wanted one of those 'bad' girls'."

And so, with his wife's blessing, Gordon went on to become one of the biggest porn stars of the 1970s and 1980s.

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex?

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

For several years, Marie Calloway, 23, has explicitly described her lifestyle and sexual exploits on her blog. Now Calloway (a pseudonym she has used since the age of 19) has published a book, "what purpose did i serve in your life" (Tyrant Books, $19), said to be an account of her sexual encounters.

In "what purpose did i serve in your life," Calloway opens up about her relationships, which predominantly originate from cyber contact, as well as her sexual fantasies, largely involving self-degradation. In fact, her words and pornographic photographs (including images of her breasts covered in bruises) were considered so controversial that three separate printers refused to print the book.

A former women’s studies major, Calloway first garnered attention with her story "Adrien Brody," published on MuuMuu House, in which she describes a brief affair with a well-known New York editor. Since then, readers have been attempting to label her as either a trailblazing feminist or a self-destructive masochist.

Dear John Letters: An Anthology of Stories from Hookers, Customers, and Assorted Sex Workers

Dear John Letters: An Anthology of Stories from Hookers, Customers, and Assorted Sex Workers | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Sex workers have become much more visible in politics and culture over the last couple of decades. Thanks to a surge of activism starting in the 1990s, memoirs and essays about sex work have become their own subgenre. Even in liberal circles, a lot of stigma still remains, but publicly admitting that you're an escort, stripper, or porn star is a lot more likely to be accepted as a valid choice.

But while the workers have been able to edge ever so slightly into the daylight, the clients have remained securely and silently in the shadows. With their new anthology, Johns, Marks, Tricks, and Chicken Hawks: Professionals and Clients Writing About Each Other,co-editors David Henry Sterry and R.J. Martin, Jr. are trying to shift the conversation to include both sides of the transaction. Sterry, and Martin will be reading at The Booksmith on Haight Street tonight along with several contributors. Sterry, who worked as a rent boy when he was 17, talked to us about sex, money, and how to be a good client.
