Angela Campbell is an associate professor in the Faculty of Law, McGill University

In a fortnight marked by intense media focus on sexual assault and harassment in the workplace, another news item – also bearing deep-seated gender implications – has moved far more discretely through the Canadian public circuit. Bill C-36, the federal government’s proposed new law to govern sex work, passed through Senate last week, and is now set to receive royal assent.

Charles Hill's Blog: The Unintended Consequences of Demand Side Reduction Strategies in the Market for Sex Work

Charles Hill's Blog: The Unintended Consequences of Demand Side Reduction Strategies in the Market for Sex Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Historically Seattle, like many other cities, has targeted the suppliers of sex services, particularly lower end “street prostitutes” who reputedly ply their trade along places like North Aurora Avenue. More recently, there has been an attempt to reduce the demand for sex services by arresting and then shaming “Johns”.   This shift in tactics is a variant of what has come to be known as the Nordic model, since it was first tried in Sweden. In Sweden prostitution has been decriminalized, but purchasing sex has been criminalized. The shift in strategy is rooted in a view that sex workers are victims who enter their trade out of economic desperation and/or because “pimps” coerce them. Interestingly, this view is at odds with the position taken by many current and former sex workers, who claim that far from being victims, they are free agents who have made an economic choice to enter their chosen profession, and are not coerced by anyone

They actually did it. My boss, aided by his miserable little wife, fired me.

For the sake of context this story begins in my recent blog post, this is what happens when your boss and his wife find your blog and don’t like what they see.

In that post, just in case you don’t want to read it, I describe what happened to me when my boss and his wife decided that they didn’t like my blog and my Twitter account and told me to take them down or get fired.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, then you're probably a fan of sex research. But have you ever wondered who is behind the fascinating studies and theories discussed on this site? How did those folks get into this field in the first place? Where do their research ideas come from? And what is a day in life of a sex researcher really like? Today, I'm launching a new feature on the blog in which I will interview prominent sex researchers, scholars, and therapists in order to give you some insight into these & other questions.

“we never gave up our power”: a conversation with Naomi Sayers

“we never gave up our power”: a conversation with Naomi Sayers | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Naomi Sayers is an Indigenous feminist from the Garden River First Nations, just east of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, who has also worked as a sex worker in the north of Canada. Naomi shared with A Kiss for Gabriela that some of her current work advocating for the rights of Indigenous people in the sex trade springs from a 2012 workshop organized by the sex worker organization Maggie’s in Toronto on public education and challenging stigma. After attending the workshop, Naomi started telling her own story using her own words and sharing about her own experiences in sex work, challenging the messages she had heard for so many years from authority figures–counselors, doctors, nurses, and the justice system–that indigenous women are victims and incapable of deciding what is right for them.

Being Yourself: Facebook Gets Personal

Being Yourself: Facebook Gets Personal | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Sex work can be incredibly isolating, and many find solace in connecting with other workers via the internet and, particularly, social media. When sex workers who don't feel comfortable using their legal names are shut out from one of the largest social media platforms in the world, it is a true disservice to those who need community the most.

Cox went on to defend the policy by saying, "It's the primary mechanism we have to protect millions of people every day, all around the world, from real harm." But if Facebook is concerned about protecting people from real harm, it should consider the impact its legal name policy will have on those of us who use pseudonyms to stay safe.

Poetry Brothel puts the bawd in bard

Poetry Brothel puts the bawd in bard | Sex Work | Scoop.it
A party where you can pay to have verse read to you in a bordello-style setting is packing in the punters – but are poetry and sex work really comparable? asks Sarah Theeboom

...Prostitution and poetry, they claim, are not the uneasy bedfellows they might seem. “Sex work and poetry are two of the oldest professions,” says Berger. “Both are incredibly intimate acts that explore love, fantasy and the underside of people.”

Adamski agrees. “It’s all about intimacy. You can have pretty good sex or you can enjoy a poem without it. But if it connects to you intimately, it’s so much better.” And that’s what they sell at the Poetry Brothel, he says: an intimate experience of art with the artist who created it.

I am utterly smitten by this!
