The Implications of Phone Sex For the Male Caller

The Implications of Phone Sex For the Male Caller | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I want to say, first of all, that I am not a fundamentalist Christian, a sexual Puritan, or anything of the sort. Secondly, I want to say that I understand that some women -especially in this severe recession- are increasingly desperate to earn money to help support their families.
Having said this, I want to ask a question of the women who frequent this forum who a) have worked in phone sex, or b) are interested in joining the phone sex industry: do you ever consider the implications of phone sex for the men who are paying for phone sex?
I know men who have had their marriages almost destroyed because of their indulgence in phone sex -something that many women consider to be "cheating." I've known men who have spent thousands of dollars -often money they really couldn't afford to spend- on phone sex, and who suffered severe economic consequences as a result. (The U.S. Federal Minimum Wage is $7.20 an HOUR, while many phone sex companies are charging men $2.50 per MINUTE, or more.)

Does nobody see this business as exploitative? As morally questionable?

I've read occasionally about the psychological toll that working as a pso can take on a woman. What is not given voice to -based on my experience anyways- is the psychological toll that can be taken on the clients who frequent this sort of service.

Again, I know several men who have been very deeply hurt emotionally as a result of their ongoing indulgence in phone sex, with a pso they believed they had developed a "relationship" with.

Red-Blooded Thing: Pros

Red-Blooded Thing: Pros | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Pretty Woman, Milk Money, Risky Business, they all make prostitutes out to be mystical, complex creatures that exist outside of normal reality and when you cross paths with one your life will change, when in reality there's an exchange of services for money in a unmagical capitalistic way. On the other hand, the opposite view of prostitutes as dirty, dangerous, and harmful is similarly counteracted by legalization's emphasis on health and cleanliness.

When London-based photographer Jane Hilton entered a Nevada brothel for the first time in 1998, she left behind any preconceived cultural notions about sex work. Over the course of the next few years, she would gain the trust of the women employed within, capturing the complexities and contradictions of the state’s legal prostitution industry.

Prostitution: Fact & Fiction

Prostitution: Fact & Fiction | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The following is taken from a press release received today from the English Collective of Prostitutes. Increasingly, sex workers are being presented as victims who have no control over their lives, and thus the state is urged to step in and “rescue” them – which in practise, means arresting them and preventing them working, publishing their photos in the press to shame them, and deporting them if they are illegal immigrants.

An Overview of U.S. Efforts to Combat Demand For Prostitution and Trafficking Sex

An Overview of U.S. Efforts to Combat Demand For Prostitution and Trafficking Sex | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Tue, Feb 24, 2015

Most law enforcement operations enforcing prostitution laws are driven by community complaints, and by the role of commercial sex in generating numerous felonies such as aggravated assault, sex and drug trafficking, and negatively impacting neighborhood quality of life. Police in over 1,100 U.S. cities and counties have conducted either street-level or web-based sting operations targeting men buying sex, and courts apply a wide range of criminal and civil penalties to those arrested – including auto seizure, community service, john schools, “dear john” letters, SOAP orders, and driver’s license suspension.

This webinar provides an overview of the 12 major tactics used to combat demand for commercial sex, and an introduction to a website containing resources offering operational information and pragmatic guidance about implementing these tactics.

Attendance is strictly limited to the first 500 who register.

How Will You Use It? New Website Let’s You Rate and Review Police Officers

How Will You Use It? New Website Let’s You Rate and Review Police Officers | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Americans find themselves in a state of flux in 2015. Many people are dealing with the hard reality that those who are sworn to protect and serve, often do the exact opposite.

The topic of police behavior is at the forefront of discussions, worldwide. Market reactions to this interest in responsible application of authority as well as interest in the abuse of authority, are popping up online.

Trying to rely on the system, to report on itself, has proven to be a futile task. In instances of police killings alone, the official method for tallying these deaths was shown to be incredibly skewed and inaccurate.

The unaccountable nature of the state, coupled with today’s network of technologically savvy activists has paved the way for third party accountability sites that are proving to be quite helpful in the struggle for justice.

Up next in the world of answerable innovation is the site CopScore, aptly named for its interface which allows users to submit, “officer performance reviews.”

Anyone can register in a matter of seconds upon going to the site. However, in order to submit a review on an officer, you must know his or her name, department, and title. The form also requires that the registrant specify whether or not the officer arrested them.

If you actually want to post a performance review on CopScore, you will need to sign in and provide the officer’s badge number as well.

The site’s creator, Arion Hardison, explains that he, “put the badge number there because I did not want people posting fake reviews.”

“I wanted only people that had an actual interaction with the Cop to be able to vote,” said Hardison.

Lust Cause: Valley phone-sex operators claim they're getting screwed

Lust Cause: Valley phone-sex operators claim they're getting screwed | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Seductively guiding callers through several dozen fantasies a night, X estimates that she's "serviced" more than 40,000 clients during her phone-sex career. Multiply that by thousands of other operators scattered around the country and it's easy to see that billions of dollars are at stake. Just how many is anyone's guess. Although phone-sex operations are legal, the Wall Street Journal has characterized the business as a "shadowy" industry dominated by perhaps fewer than a dozen companies, none eager to publicize its inner workings.

All of which infuriates Madame X, who perceives herself and other operators as crucial players in the industry.

"If Michael Jackson does his dance on the stage, you pay him," she says, fuming. "If Michael Jordan puts that damn ball through the hoop, you pay him. In this business, I'm the one who makes the payoff, so give me the money. And stop treating me like trash just because I'm in the sex industry."
