Selling sex doesn't make you an unfit parent

Selling sex doesn't make you an unfit parent | Sex Work | Scoop.it

"It's absurd that sex workers don't have more protection, and their reputation suffers from the victimization. Jasmine suffered from the reputation and from someone spreading lies about her," explained Jacobsson, who had professional ties with Jasmine through Rose Alliance, where the mother of two was a board member.

Jasmine told her colleagues in the Rose Alliance that the district court took away her children because she "romanticized sex work" and that it deemed her an unfit parent. Social services received a tip-off suggesting the she was using drugs and drinking in front of her children. There were even suggestions that the 27-year-old was working from home, Jacobsson told The Local.

"This couldn't be further from the truth. For one thing, she hardly touched alcohol, but also, she was an upper-class sex worker. She would be coming into Stockholm from Västerås to luxury hotels, just once or twice a week, for a fee of around 4,000 kronor ($610) per hour," she added.

"She was doing it all for her kids. And she enjoyed doing it. You tell me another job where a mother can earn 6,000 or 7,000 kronor a week and still remain a stay-at-home mum."

Sex Industry & Sex Workers in Nevada

Sex Industry & Sex Workers in Nevada | Sex Work | Scoop.it

In both legal and illegal form, the sex industry is present in every state in the country. Yet, it is only in Nevada that sex industry is legalized in the form of brothel prostitution. While prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas, the city is internationally recognized as a highly sexualized tourist destination with a flourishing market in commercial sexual entertainment and services.

If the Nevada sex industry affects the state’s social health and its quality of life, it doesn’t do so in a uniform, easy-to-judge manner. The growth of the sex industry or pornoculture in the Silver State has a negative impact where it condones exploitation, oppression, crime, and continued stereotyping and stigmatization of women. The abundance of sexually charged entertainment can have a positive impact when sex workers have a range of viable economic options, when they are not forced into commercial sex against their will, and when Nevada’s tourism-based economy cultivates arenas of safe sexual expression and enjoyment.

There is little reason to think that the broader trends toward more sexualized everyday culture will play out differently in Nevada than in other parts of the country and the world. Las Vegas is likely to remain at the forefront of these cultural shifts and will continue to benefit economically from the current trends. This presents a significant opportunity for Nevada to move to the forefront of the national debate about these cultural trends, and to take the lead as an innovator in policies, programs, and practices that confront head-on the dangers and pitfalls associated with a growing, and most likely inevitable, sex industry in ways that minimize risk and exploitation and maximize safety and empowerment.

Tumblr Stumbles, Tries To Right Itself, Banks Left | The Marketing Whore

Tumblr Stumbles, Tries To Right Itself, Banks Left | The Marketing Whore | Sex Work | Scoop.it

On July 16, 2013, Tumblr creator David Karp was on The Colbert Report. During the short interview segment, Karp and host Stephen Colbert discussed a number of issues ~ including the naked, and sometimes fornicating, elephant in the room: porn on Tumblr.

...

But then, just two days later, Tumblr instituted a new policy about adult content. Along with the pre-Yahoo sale attempts to exclude search engine indexing of adult Tumblr bogs, Tumblr’s new rules meant that adult-rated blogs and their posts would no longer show up in site tags; the former preventing blogs from being found off-site, the latter keeping blogs from being searched and found on Tumblr itself.

Obviously, this lead to quite the reaction from Tumblr users.

Gracie Passette's insight:

What's behind all the changes? (Hint: It smells like money!) Can you trust Karp & Tumblr? (That may depend upon a few things.)

Adult content is always the wet elephant in the room on any web network. They all let the adult content start, as long as it keeps quiet and no one starts a fuss about it. If anything changes the adult content becomes controversial (even though it was quiet and ignored for years). Kind of an immature attitude. People obviously want porn - we are just supposed to be ashamed of it while telling everyone how natural and good sex is.

Can Escorts Find Love?

Can Escorts Find Love? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Getting rejected and abandoned is no fun. But even more seriously, if it looks like a relationship is about to end, most escorts will begin to worry that their former partner may reveal her secret life to family and friends or report her to the authorities. Living double lives as most escorts do, often leads to a profound sense of isolation.

Family members and even close friends are not good sources of emotional support either. Most don't know the truth about an escort's life and work or they hold that truth in contempt. At best, they may tolerate what an escort does in hopes that she will come to her senses someday. But this isn't a safe place to take feelings and fears. Instead, escorts can become increasingly solitary. All too often it seems the clients of escorts are the only source of love and respect which an escort can count on.

Sex Workers Rise Up After Fatal Stabbings

Sex Workers Rise Up After Fatal Stabbings | Sex Work | Scoop.it

If you passed by the Turkish or Swedish consulates in New York on Friday, you may have seen a knot of sex workers and their supporters holding red umbrellas—both as a symbol of sex workers' rights and a shield against the sun on what was the hottest day of the year. The protestors, about a dozen at their peak, kept a spirited vigil over several hours, chanting, passing out fliers, and fielding questions from midtown Manhattan's business attire class. One man on the Park Avenue sidewalk in front of the Swedish consulate asked nervously, "Are you all… professionals?" Some protestors turned their heads and smiled.

The New York action accompanied rallies in 36 cities and on four continents for an international day of action demanding an end to the stigma and violence against sex workers’ communities. Two recent murders sparked the protests: of Dora Özer, a sex worker and trans woman from Kuşadası in Turkey who was stabbed by a man posing as a client on July 9, and of Petite Jasmine, a sex worker and mother of two children stabbed by her ex-husband in Sweden on July 11. Calls for justice for Dora and Jasmine, prompted by the International Committee on the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe (ICRSE), spread quickly through social media in the week leading up to Friday's actions.

What India’s Sex Workers Want: Power, Not Rescue

What India’s Sex Workers Want: Power, Not Rescue | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Anu Mokal wasn't breaking the law when she was out walking with her friend last year, yet to the police, her very existence was criminal. As a sex worker in the Indian state of Maharashtra, she lives under various laws aimed at criminalizing the sex trade, supposedly to protect women from exploitation. But it was the law that became her assailant that day when a police officer viciously attacked her, hurling insults and beating her severely.

Mokal pleaded that she was pregnant, but—according to Meena Seshu, founder and general secretary of SANGRAM, a sex workers’ rights and anti-HIV/AIDS organization—the officer accused her of lying and said sex workers had "no right to be mothers." A few weeks after the assault, she miscarried.

India has not outlawed sex work itself, but sex workers face various restrictions on related activities such as soliciting in public or pimping. The law had left her defenseless, however, against the violence of the state. Fortunately, another advocate stepped in on her behalf: SANGRAM and its affiliated sex worker activist collective, Veshya Anyay Mukti Parishad (VAMP). The activists demanded that Maharashtra politicians investigate the beating and institute reforms, including a grievance commission to address abuses of sex workers' human rights.

Too much Va Va Voom? Renault advert featuring close-ups of burlesque dancers is banned by watchdog because it 'treats women like sexual objects' | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A car advert featuring scantily-clad  burlesque dancers has been banned after watchdogs branded it sexist.

They were concerned that it featured ‘a  number of shots of the women’s breasts and bottoms, in which their heads were  obscured’.

The way the women had been presented in the  Renault Clio advert ‘invited viewers to see them as sexual objects’, it was  ruled.

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex?

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

For several years, Marie Calloway, 23, has explicitly described her lifestyle and sexual exploits on her blog. Now Calloway (a pseudonym she has used since the age of 19) has published a book, "what purpose did i serve in your life" (Tyrant Books, $19), said to be an account of her sexual encounters.

In "what purpose did i serve in your life," Calloway opens up about her relationships, which predominantly originate from cyber contact, as well as her sexual fantasies, largely involving self-degradation. In fact, her words and pornographic photographs (including images of her breasts covered in bruises) were considered so controversial that three separate printers refused to print the book.

A former women’s studies major, Calloway first garnered attention with her story "Adrien Brody," published on MuuMuu House, in which she describes a brief affair with a well-known New York editor. Since then, readers have been attempting to label her as either a trailblazing feminist or a self-destructive masochist.

Suzy Favor Hamilton Shouldn't Be Shamed For Turning to Sex Work

Suzy Favor Hamilton Shouldn't Be Shamed For Turning to Sex Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

In 1983, the Big Ten Conference established a women's Athlete of the Year award and later named it after Suzy Favor Hamilton, a University of Wisconsin middle distance runner and alumna who followed her illustrious college career with three appearances in the Olympic Games. She was more than qualified to have her name attached to such a prestigious award. Unfortunately, the conference announced on Tuesday that her name would be removed from the award after it was revealed in December that Favor Hamilton had worked as an escort since 2011.

"I do not expect people to understand," she wrote on Twitter, "but the reasons for doing this made sense to me at the time and were very much related to depression." She added that her husband knew about her work and didn't approve of it.

But something that the Big Ten needs to realize — along with the rest of the country — is that sex work is one of the most stigmatized professions in the world.
