A Bunny Thing Happened: An Oral History of the Playboy Clubs

A Bunny Thing Happened: An Oral History of the Playboy Clubs | Sex Work | Scoop.it

When Hugh Hefner opened the first Playboy Club, in 1960, he was selling men the chance to walk into the pages of his magazine: the swinging-bachelor-pad décor, the carefully garnished cocktails, and, above all, the cantilevered, cottontailed Bunnies. For the women wearing ears, the payoff was entirely different. As a 21st-century Playboy Club opens in London, Bruce Handy hears from Hef, his execs, and a hutchful of former Bunnies about the rise and fall (and rise?) of the nightlife empire that spawned an all-American sex symbol.

Phone Sex Workers and Allies | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I don’t sell my body for money. I sell my time, companionship, wit, beauty, intelligence, conversational skills, hand holding assets, shoulder to cry on capabilities, nicest lingerie, sweetest perfume, sassiest smile, wrinkle-in-the-nose-laughter. I don’t sell my body for money. I retain full ownership of my body no matter how much money is in my hand.

And everyone would do well to remember that.

Study Says That Fewer Men Are Paying for Sex. Study Should Talk to Female Sex Workers.

Study Says That Fewer Men Are Paying for Sex. Study Should Talk to Female Sex Workers.     | Sex Work | Scoop.it

“Could the oldest profession be losing its customers?” The Los Angeles Times posed that question this week on the heels of a new study showing that American men are becoming less and less likely to say that they’ve exchanged money for sex. The latest iteration of the University of Chicago’s General Social Survey found that last year, 9.1 percent of men “had ever paid for or received payment for sex.” In the 1990s, 17 percent of men said the same thing. I asked Melissa Gira Grant—the writer behind the blog postwhoreamerica.com, and the author of the forthcoming book Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work—to help peek behind the numbers.

Indentured Servitude, Money Laundering, and Piles of Money: The Crazy Secrets of Internet Cam Girls (NSFW) | Sex Work | Scoop.it

If you think cam girls—those flirty naked characters that plague porn site pop-up ads—are raking in easy money, you're right. If you think cam girls are bleakly stripping online out of desperation, you're also right. Peel away the sex and pixels and money and you're left with the cloudy truth about the Internet's relationship status with these on-demand entertainers: it's complicated.

Paying To Play: Interview With A John

Paying To Play: Interview With A John | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Still, there’s something thrilling to going from feeling utterly alone and unlovable to realizing that all these women with all these pictures in all these ads, you can be with any one of them, at least for one hour, and pretend. And all you need is money. It’s not a replacement for love— it pales in comparison to a real loving relationship with somebody who you are sexually compatible with, but it sure as fuck beats being alone and feeling untouchable.

Gracie Passette's insight:

Utterly worthy of the time to read as this interview sounds like so many clients. (Lots of sex history from the 1970s too.)

Harlotry: What I’ve Learned About Money (And Self Worth) From Sex Work

Harlotry: What I’ve Learned About Money (And Self Worth) From Sex Work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

There’s a common assumption that all sex workers are very rich or very poor. You hear about poor, put-upon street workers or ballin’ out of control escorts and dominatrices. Neither of these is the norm, in my experience. Most of us are comfortably middle class.

Granted, we do achieve that coveted dying privilege earlier in life than many of our peers, but it doesn’t change the fact that we mostly live pretty normal lives. The thing that sex work does give us, though, is great money management skills. The thing about sex work is that one week you can take home multiple thousands of dollars, but the next week you can make nothing at all.

Tullia d’Aragona

Tullia d’Aragona | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The existence of courtesans is a glaring refutation of neofeminist dogma about objectification, the eternal victimhood of whores, etc; the fact that the most celebrated, successful and highly-paid harlots of all time were often those who were educated and could match or surpass men in intellectual pursuits throws a huge spanner into the catechism that prostitution is a manifestation of male dominance over women, that our clients hate us, and so on.  Whenever possible, neofeminist historians deny that courtesans were prostitutes, pretend that accomplished women were not really courtesans, or describe them with circumlocutions like, “she chose to cohabit with several men who supported her financially.”  And when all else fails, they simply ignore them.  Fortunately neither male historians nor female ones with less parochial views feel the need to dissemble about such women, and among them Tullia d’Aragona is rightfully viewed as worthy of respect and study.

Being A Successful Camgirl - Hellen Roxx

Being A Successful Camgirl - Hellen Roxx | Sex Work | Scoop.it

For the past year and a bit, I’ve been a full-time camgirl.  This is my job.  This is my hobby.  This is fun and enjoyable for me, so I spend a lot of time on it.  Lately, I’ve had a number of girls message me and ask me how I do so well.  What exactly do I do in videos, how much do I make per month, what do I *really* do since there’s no possible way a non-nude girl could be this popular.  You want to know how I’ve managed to get to where I am?  I’ll tell you.

Don’t listen to shit anyone tells you about what you can / can’t do.  If you really love doing balloon fetish videos, then go and do them.  Make that your “thing”.  Combine it with other fetishes for some variation.  Branch out and try new things if you want, but don’t ever feel like there is anything that you HAVE to do.  You never have to do anything on cam that you aren’t comfortable with doing.  You never have to interact with anyone with whom you aren’t comfortable.  You never have to charge less than you are comfortable charging.  Hells yes I think my tits are worth $100, so that’s what I charge to see them, when I decide I feel like offering that.  The best part about this job is being your own boss, so BE YOUR OWN BOSS.  You control who you interact with, what you do and don’t do, what you charge.  Own that!

Gracie Passette's insight:

Good tips here ~ not just for cam performers, but any performer or sew worker.

If I See One More Fucking Person Talking About How "Cute" and "Classy" Betty Page and Old School Burlesque Performers/PinUp Girls were, while calling modern sex workers trashy/gross/etc

If I See One More Fucking Person Talking About How "Cute" and "Classy" Betty Page and Old School Burlesque Performers/PinUp Girls were, while calling modern sex workers trashy/gross/etc | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I am going to go into full on berserker age.

NO, fuck you.  At the time Betty Page was around, the shit she was doing was transgressive, and shocking and dirty, and if you’d been around there you would have hated her fucking guts because you’re a whorephobic, slut shaming, classist piece of shit, who thinks female sexuality should be nothing but a stylized, tasteful, elegant non-corporeal thing.

The thing is, Betty Page’s stuff was the hardcore gangbang bukkake scene of its time, that was as raw and primal and dirty as it got (without getting really really illegal).  She was in fact MORE marginalized than the pornstars of today, considering that porn was in fact illegal back then, and was involved in a massive obscenity trial.  She lived on the margins of society, and now you have her on your “Oh so cute” fridge magnets as a nice, tasteful, non-threatening image of sex.

As the dirty, trashy slut you fear so much, as a sex worker in this day and age, Betty Page doesn’t fucking belong to you, burlesque sure as shit doesn’t belong to you (I’ve heard burlesque teachers going “it’s so much more about creativity than raunchiness, it’s not like we’re dirty strippers!  EW” needless to say I had to interject “I was a stripper” and make her very VERY uncomfortable) if you’re one of the classy sanitized sexuality past romanticizing fuckwaffles, I fucking hate you.  You owe your performance art that you claim to love SO much to dirty, trashy, declasse bitches like me, so you can suck my left one

Gracie Passette's insight:

Forgetting the marginalization of Page & other icons of the past as you idolize is inaccurate & shameful.

Anger as men defend right to use sex workers - Women

Anger as men defend right to use sex workers - Women | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The men’s petition in the November issue of the magazine Causeur was signed by figures including the novelist and editor Frederic Beigbeder, several journalists and columnists, comedians, actors and the lawyer Richard Malka, who has defended clients including the former IMF leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The petition stated “some of us have gone, go, or will go to prostitutes – and we are not even ashamed”.

They added “everyone should be free to sell their charms, and even to love doing it.”

But feminists and the government expressed outrage at what they saw as the hijacking of the feminist writer de Beauvoir’s 1971 abortion manifesto in which 343 famous women, including Catherine Deneuve and Jeanne Moreau, admitted having had an abortion, something which left them liable for arrest. That petition, which the media later dubbed the manifesto of the “343 salopes” (s**ts or b**ches) helped lead to the legalisation of abortion in France.

Call Girl – review

Call Girl – review | Sex Work | Scoop.it

It is an interesting if generic thrillerisation of a real-life prostitution scandal in Sweden in the 1970s involving government highups. The film goes further than what appears to have been reported at the time, specifically showing underage girls from a juvenile detention centre getting invited to "parties" and coerced into sex with senior politicians –
