South Africa: Are 30,000 Children Really 'Trafficked' in South Africa Every Year? the Claim Exaggerates the Problem | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The figures are certainly alarming and appear regularly online, and in newspaper, radio and television reports. They are seldom interrogated by the reporters who quote them. But are they really accurate? Is there research to back them up?

Thai anti-trafficking measures prove controversial

Thai anti-trafficking measures prove controversial | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Local authorities and American Evangelicals are currently working on reduction of sex trafficking in Thailand. But, some sex industry workers say they haven't been trafficked, and are calling for a stop to the measures.

...But while Thai law enforcement authorities are trying to meet this quota by pulling sex workers out of brothels, there is little evidence to suggest that the sex workers they are rescuing are actually victims of trafficking.

WHAT HE SAYS WHILE ON THE PHONE:

He moved from the New Jersey/New York Area to Southern California about 3 months ago. Claims to have targeted sex workers on the East coast as well, taking them to places in the Hamptons and on the Jersey Shore before he moved to SoCal. He calls the Newport, CA rape crisis line once he has a sex worker trapped. He says he cuts their breasts and rapes them. He says he wants to stop. He calls for an audience while he hurts people, and the crisis line counselor reports to have heard muffled/gagged crying and screaming in the background of the calls.

Movie Review: 'Concussion' combines a sense of style with sex

Movie Review: 'Concussion' combines a sense of style with sex | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Stacie Passon becomes Eleanor, a high-priced prostitute entertaining female clients in the work-in-progress apartment.

Like Catherine Deneuve's character in "Belle de Jour," Abby isn't in it for the money. Her work as Eleanor frees something in her and connects her with a power she didn't know she had. Writer-director Passon uses a series of tastefully explicit encounters with clients — some less telling than others — to examine aspects of her protagonist's personality: maternal, adventurous, take-charge.

What is worse than a world full of super-brothels? A world where sex is driven underground

What is worse than a world full of super-brothels? A world where sex is driven underground | Sex Work | Scoop.it

When it comes to dealing with Scotland's sex trade, most people are on one or other side of a great divide. They either see prostitution as a fundamental wrong that should be eradicated, or as the world's oldest profession, unavoidable and eternal - and therefore needing to be made as safe as possible. I don't advocate either view. I believe in people's right to decide what they do with their own bodies, even if it's for money. I believe in helping women get out of prostitution if that's what they choose, but not driving them out.

A Burlesque Routine Unzipped

A Burlesque Routine Unzipped | Sex Work | Scoop.it

When I was 16 I worked on a production of Pal Joey. It was not a good play, but I had a great time working on it and the songs were pretty catchy. One song in particular stuck with me because it was about the things a burlesquer thinks about while she’s working. I did not yet know that I was going to be a burlesquer, I didn’t even know what burlesque was, but I thought this was a pretty awesome song. In our production the singer mimed unzipping parts of her costume every time she sang the word Zip, which is a hell of a lot of times. One of the cast members said that, while they were rehearsing, she thought that the singer would actually be unzipping a hundred tiny zippers all over her costume. I thought that would have been a lot more fun to watch, though it would be absolute murder on the poor costumer who had to make it.

In it for the money? The smart investment is in an anti-sex worker career

In it for the money? The smart investment is in an anti-sex worker career | Sex Work | Scoop.it

As sex workers, we're constantly having our campaigns dismissed on the grounds that everything we say must be a lie because we have a financial stake in sex work.  It drives me crazy that it's a one-sized argument, as though only sex workers profit from sex work.  Your average sex worker makes substantially less than an anti-sex worker academic or nonprofit, so who really has a "financial incentive" to say what they say?

Gracie Passette's insight:

Read this; you will be astonished to see how much it pays to bash sex work.

Nominations are Open for Top Sex Bloggers of 2013! | Between My Sheets

Nominations are Open for Top Sex Bloggers of 2013! | Between My Sheets | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The rules are simple:

1. You can’t nominate yourself. You can post on your blog or via social media asking your fans to nominate you. Click here to easily tweet to your fans!

2. You don’t have to be a sex blogger yourself to nominate people.

3. Each nomination should include the blog url. I don’t know everyone, and some bloggers have the same names.

4. Blog content can be anything sex related. Nothing illegal, obviously.

5. The blog can’t be protected. It’s ok if a few of the posts are protected, but the entire blog can’t be behind a password.

6. The blog should be at least a year old, but anyone who’s been blogging since at least Jan. 1, 2013 will be considered. Special exceptions will be made for someone who has recently moved to a new blog, but was previously blogging somewhere else.

7. You can nominate as many bloggers as you like, but please try to limit to your very favorites.

8. The blog must be active, which means that the blogger posts at least once every week or so. When I judge in October, any blog with no posts in the last 45 days will be eliminated.

9. A few blogs have been retired! Those who have been named as the top blog are retired to make room for new awesome bloggers on the list. Retired bloggers are: Sinclair Sexsmith, Coquitten (blog no longer available), Guy New York and the Dirty Gentleman, and Molly’s Daily Kiss.

10. Nominations close on September 30. I recommend nominating your favorites right now so you don’t forget. You an also come back and leave an additional comment with more nominations if you think of someone else who deserves to be on the list.

Comments are moderated here, so if you’ve never posted here before, please be patient while I manually approve your nominations comment. If it doesn’t appear within one week, feel free to email me about the problem at rori-at-betweenmysheets-dot-com. If you don’t want to make your nominations public, for whatever reason, you can also email me at this email address with “2013 Nominations” in the subject line.

The internet: is there anything it can't ruin? First, Craigslist destroys the newspaper; ebooks are destroying publishing; and, most heinous of all, internet porn is destroying the legal Nevada brothel business. Well, technically the economy is causing the problem, but it's much easier to blame the internet, what with its free nude photos and easy access.

MPS Store Changes

MPS Store Changes | Sex Work | Scoop.it

This means that we are no longer allowed to sell our email addresses to clients. Which is more than a bit disappointing, as email contact is often faster — both for those of us with multiple phone sex operator accounts and for callers who are using their mobile phones to quickly and privately schedule a call. (Not to mention, the purchasing of an email address quite often is the mark of a good phone sex client, for the purchase usually means they are serious about continuing to pay for your services and are not going to attempt to harass you for free email exchanges, etc.)

While this loss in efficiency (and client screening) is, like the recent loss of selling tangible items at MPS, admittedly painful, there is good news.

Theatre Thursdays: Sex Work as Portrayed in Musicals

Theatre Thursdays: Sex Work as Portrayed in Musicals | Sex Work | Scoop.it

We at Lady Geek Girl and Friends are ardent supporters of sex workers’ rights and sex positivity. Because of this, we find the portrayal of sex workers in musicals, well, troubling at best. As with many other forms of media, prostitution is shown as pretty much the lowest possible rung a woman can reach. Sometimes it’s used as a code word that means ‘she has a tragic backstory’; sometimes it’s used to show just how low she has been brought. Either way, if you’re a sex worker in a musical, odds are you’re gonna have a bad time.
