Aussie sex workers urge government to grant skilled work visas

Aussie sex workers urge government to grant skilled work visas | Sex Work | Scoop.it

While laws vary from state to state, prostitution in some form is legal throughout the nation. But sex work is not included among the approved professions eligible for entry under the 457 visa. The Australian Sex Workers Association, also known as the Scarlet Alliance, wants to change that.

Brazil Will No Longer Run These 'Happy Being a Prostitute' Ads

Brazil Will No Longer Run These 'Happy Being a Prostitute' Ads | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Like most things in Brazil, prostitution is legal.

Sex work even has its own holiday — June 2nd was International Day of the Prostitute. To raise awareness about safe prostitution and to work against the stigma that surrounds the profession, Brazil recently launched an online campaign called "I'm happy being a prostitute." And then they quickly canceled it.

"I would prefer to be with a sex worker than a waiter" | Sex Work | Scoop.it

There are men out there who're turned on by the idea of their girlfriends/wives having sex with other men; some men are turned on by the idea of their girlfriends/wives being paid for sex. You're clearly one of those guys. And you're within your rights to share this information with your girlfriend and to try to convince her to return to sex work. Because your fantasies of sex work---of her doing sex work---turn you on. Again, that's fine. But you could make a more convincing case, PIMP, if you were better acquainted with the realities of sex work.

You should suck off strange men for money.

Women's coalition plans to argue against legalizing prostitution

Women's coalition plans to argue against legalizing prostitution | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A coalition of groups preparing to intervene in a Supreme Court of Canada hearing into the future of this country's prostitution laws is advocating for a "third way" that would ensure sex workers aren't turned into criminals while ensuring johns and pimps can still be prosecuted for buying and selling women and girls.

The Women's Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution -- which includes a number of organizations including the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres, the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies and the Vancouver-based Rape Relief and Women's Shelter -- is among more than a dozen interveners in a hearing scheduled for June 13.

The hearing stems from an Ontario Court of Appeal decision that struck down the Criminal Code ban on bawdy houses last year because the law puts sex workers in danger by forcing them to work outside.

The case has revealed deep divisions among organizations that work with and advocate for the women -- often poor, drug addicted, and in many cases trafficked from outside Canada -- working in the sex trade. Some groups are advocating for a form of legalization, while others insist prostitution must remain against the law.

John McCracken, chair of the Otara-Papatoetoe local board, says sex workers attract predators to family neighbourhoods - and put their own children at risk.

"We've also had cases where st workers have brought their children out onto the streets and they're with them at night when they are working and they're learning the business that way."

Just Business? The Unknown World of Male Prostitution in the Netherlands

Just Business? The Unknown World of Male Prostitution in the Netherlands | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The vibrant Red Light District in Amsterdam is one of the most important, but also one of the most controversial tourist attractions in the Netherlands. On all but two small streets, women sell their bodies for sex. In the Barndesteeg and the Bloedstraat, one can find transgender or transsexual prostitutes. Men are nowhere to be found behind windows. Instead, they operate in parks, gay bars, gay clubs, chat rooms and illegal brothels.

Male prostitution is hardly discussed in the Netherlands, but it is out there – in every province, region and city. It is therefore important to raise awareness about the existence of these boys and men. During our quest to paint a picture of male prostitution in the country, we were often surprised by the helpfulness of the community even while being shocked about some of the details of the business.

Male prostitution is characterized by three major taboos. First, receiving money for sex is not generally accepted (from either male or female clients). Second, homosexuality is still stigmatized. And third, men are not “supposed” to be the victims of prostitution or sexual abuse, which often leads to their not seeking professional help when they need it (Repetur, 2011).

Oakland Prostitutes Being Forced To Rob Clients, Police Sting Reveals

Oakland Prostitutes Being Forced To Rob Clients, Police Sting Reveals | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A recent prostitution sting in Oakland has turned up a surprising new trend, some prostitutes are being forced to rob their clients when they don't meet their quota.

...

According to police, if a prostitute has not made enough money, her pimp will force her to target her clients, taking the crime to a whole other level.

“And that level is robbery,” said Oakland Police spokesperson Johnna Watson. “They’ll take their wallet, money out of the ATM, and also their car.”

There is also a new twist. Pimps have been discovered selling whatever is stolen to the next john.

“Looking to capitalize from every angle possible,” Watson said.

Gracie Passette's insight:

While this sort of prostitution is often less a choice than a circusmstance, this aspect is worthy of noting.

Sex probe: Revealing the bare facts of industry

Sex probe: Revealing the bare facts of industry | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The local sex industry has almost doubled in the past 20 years and much of it occurs between the sheets in motel rooms across the New England North West.

Sex workers steer clear of hustling work off the street because in order for them to make money in country areas, they must be discreet.

The claims might startle some but it’s just some of the cold, hard evidence that has landed in front of UNE expert Professor John Scott, who’s been researching the industry for almost 20 years.

LinkedIn apparently has a 'prostitution problem'

LinkedIn apparently has a 'prostitution problem' | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I always thought that Facebook was the social network for "fun stuff," while LinkedIn was the social network for "work stuff." I guess I need to change my definition of "work stuff." LinkedIn has just singled out escorts as specifically unwelcome on their platform, and changed their terms of service to banish users promoting sex in exchange for money.

To all you sex workers out there (I'm told you prefer the term "sex worker"!), be aware that this is not an overall ban on promotion of adult services on the LinkedIn platform. You can still promote yourself as a porn star or fetish model on LinkedIn, and it would still be legal and compliant with the updated LinkedIn terms of service. But you can no longer promote "escort services or prostitution" on your LinkedIn profile.

LinkedIn updated their terms of service to ban escort services on Monday. (You have to scroll two-thirds of the way down the page to get to the juicy part). In Section 10 of the terms, entitled LinkedIn "DOs" and “DON’Ts," the policy has been revised to state that LinkedIn users cannot "upload, post, email, InMail, transmit or otherwise make available or initiate any content that...promotes escort services or prostitution" -- "[e]ven if it is legal where you are located."

There's the rub. Sex work and escort services are legal in several countries -- and some parts of the United States, if I'm to believe the little cards that cab drivers hand me whenever I'm in Las Vegas.

Sex workers won’t get their day in court

Sex workers won’t get their day in court | Sex Work | Scoop.it

On June 13, Canada’s highest court will hear the appeal by federal prosecutors of a lower court ruling that struck down three anti-prostitution laws  for violating the Charter Of Rights And Freedoms.

Now we learn that it’s possible sex workers won’t have as strong a voice as they need in these proceedings. Presiding Judge Richard Wagner, it turns out, has denied intervenor status to many groups with frontline experience in the issues at stake.

This is a terrible loss. Shut out were organizations like Maggie’s: the Toronto Sex Workers Action Project, Stella and the Feminist Coalition, representing 23 women’s shelters, rape crisis centres and clinics.

At the same time, the judge has allowed participation by a range of prostitution abolitionist groups with religious affiliations, like the anti-feminist REAL Women, Christian Legal Fellowship, Catholic Civil Rights League, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada and more.

The untapped wisdom of sex workers

The untapped wisdom of sex workers | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Leave it to the British tabloid The Sun, which in the past has brought us such considered coverage as "FREDDIE STARR ATE MY HAMSTER", to approach the topics of sex work and relationship advice with all the subtlety of a neon-painted brick: last month they ran a piece with the screaming headline, "I had sex with 1,000 men as £700-a-time hooker ... now I'm an infidelity counsellor."

Take a moment to get the sighs out of your system and it turns out the piece contains fairly straightforward - and even considerate - advice from former sex worker Rebecca Dakin, such as, "I just want to help people stay in relationships. My knowledge comes from experience. When I was an escort about 60 per cent of my clients were married, and that gives me a pretty unique insight into how men work and what they want."

That didn't stop website Salon from weeping and wailing about the piece, with Tracy Clark Florey unloading on the topic, playing into the tired notion of "bad sex workers versus good sex workers" by saying, of another piece by Kitty Stryker, "Her advice boils down to this: talk with your partner.

Rather than giving out grudging blow jobs like doggie treats, communicate openly, honestly and without judgment about your mutual needs and desires. What a concept."

But boiling the particular sort of relationship advice espoused by Dakin down to "have more sex with your husband", it is certainly not exclusive to "racy" editorial; Bettina Arndt has been doling out similar rhetoric for years. So why characterise it as specific to sex work?

What sets The Sun editorial and the Salon piece apart is that The Sun actually allowed a sex worker to speak for herself, and in an era where much of the dialogue about sex work is dominated by non-sex workers, that's becoming increasingly rare.

South Korea: A Thriving Sex Industry In A Powerful, Wealthy Super-State | Sex Work | Scoop.it

South Korea, a wealthy, powerful Asian super-state, technology hub and stalwart U.S. ally, has a deep, dark secret. Prostitution and the sex trade flourish in South Korea just under the country’s shiny surface.

Despite its illegality, prostitution and the sex trade is so huge that the government once admitted it accounts for as much as 4 percent of South Korea’s annual Gross Domestic Product -- about the size of the fishing and agriculture industries combined....

“It’s a $13 billion a year reality … and it’s not going anywhere.”

Duty-Free sex in Amsterdam – Prostitutes showing a creative attitude to their work

Duty-Free sex in Amsterdam – Prostitutes showing a creative attitude to their work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Elegantly attired girls and women from Latvia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Russia – not allowing men to succumb to the tedium of waiting for their flights – are instead fulfilling their sexual desires.

These elite prostitutes come into Amsterdam on the morning flights and work all day. In the evening, they return home to Vilnius, Sofia, Bucharest, and Moscow.

Our correspondent at Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) explains that the women do not actually enter The Netherlands, instead remaining at all times in the Duty-Free Zone.

There are two hotels at the airport which can be used for these intimate encounters. For those who are in a hurry, however, such meetings may be held in the toilets.

An officer with KLM believes that: “these sex-workers must make a lot of money; otherwise they wouldn’t fly to and from Amsterdam on a daily basis.” It certainly is a creative approach to work.

As prostitution is legal in The Netherlands, airport authorities cannot sanction these sexual services. All they can do is ensure that everything remains in hand.

Heidi Fleiss Gives Tour Of A Swanky New Brothel | Sex Work | Scoop.it

In this clip from "Oprah: Where Are They Now?", Heidi takes cameras inside this newly updated brothel, showing off recent renovations -- ever seen a $6,000 showerhead? -- and revealing plans for the continued renovations to make the brothel even more inviting. Of course, Heidi says, it's been a lot of work to get Dennis Hof's Love Ranch up to her standards.

"We bought it from a 200-year-old pimp," Heidi jokes in the clip. "Really, this [brothel] was very similar to a women's penitentiary. Even how you entered: You had to go through all these weird bars and buzzers, and someone's peering out the little peephole, scoping you up and down. It was so dark in here, you had to be escorted with a little flashlight down these hallways. And it was kind of scary... It was really a creepy feeling."

Advice from a Male Escort

Advice from a Male Escort | Sex Work | Scoop.it

An interview with Ash, a personal trainer and male escort featured on Showtime’s deliriously entertaining Gigolos...

Best quotes from Ash:

The beautiful thing of working in this industry, especially in America, is that it can be so many things. We’re contracted for our time, not necessarily our bodies. We’re not required to do anything sexual, ever. Once you understand the nature of your job, you can create a safe space for yourself, while also creating a wonderful experience for your client.

Sexually, the problem in our society is that we’ve grown up on porn. It’s all a projection in our minds of what sex is, and it’s all body parts. People don’t know how to connect with each other, and the most important thing about sex is exactly that connection. You have to create a safe enough environment with trust between two people so you can talk about what’s arousing to you, what feels good to you, and all your fantasies. Women have as many fantasies as guys do. Maybe more. It’s just creating a space where they feel they won’t be judged as a terrible whore, or that it’s completely safe to open up and share everything. Trust is a huge thing. By listening, you engage trust. When you have trust, you have intimacy and presence. When you have intimacy, you can have fun.

'No Condoms as Evidence' Legislation Up for Debate in Albany | VICE United States

'No Condoms as Evidence' Legislation Up for Debate in Albany | VICE United States | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The evening's theme is “Pretty Woman Redux.” The gathering is part of a monthly storytelling series from the sex-workers' rights group, the Red Umbrella Project. For two hours, a handful of New York’s most articulate “hos” (as they endearingly call themselves), share intimate, industry tales.

As in past sessions, donations from the event will benefit a cause vital to every sex worker in the city: banning the New York Police Department’s well-documented practice of using condom possession as evidence of prostitution.

It’s a battle health rights advocates have fought for years. In every legislative session since 1999, proponents of a “No Condoms as Evidence” bill have asked state lawmakers to squelch the practice, citing evidence that it’s forced sex workers to stop carrying and using condoms altogether. In every session, the bill has died on the committee floor.

In recent months, however, efforts to engage lawmakers have accelerated, thanks to studies released in 2012 by the Pros Network and Human Rights Watch—two Manhattan-based organizations that say the policy has led to a serious public-health crisis.

Teenagers 'selling sex'

Teenagers 'selling sex' | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A NEW non-governmental organisation has discovered that around 85 per cent of sexually active teens in the Bahamas are engaging in some kind of transactional sex.

Officials at the Bahamas Urban Youth Development Centre have also found that whatever the conventional wisdom on the matter, the majority of middle and high schoolers in the Bahamas are not sexually active. But of those who are, the majority are involved in risky behaviour.

“Say if we have a group of 30 students 25-30 per cent are sexually active and of those, 85 per cent are involved in some type of transactional sex,”  president and CEO at Bahamas Urban Youth Development Centre Prodesta Moore told The Tribune yesterday.

Transactional sex relationships are created when gifts, money or services are given in exchange for sex. It differs from prostitution in the sense that only a portion of the needs of the person providing the sex are met through the practice.

Ms Moore said that young Bahamian women can often create for themselves a network of “regulars” – several men who they can count on to fulfil a number of their needs, ranging anywhere from school supplies, exam fees or lunch money.

“Many young people put themselves through high school and college in this way. They see it as a means of taking care of themselves, that’s the culture. They feel that if a man wants to deal with them he has to pay in some way and they are not prostituting themselves by doing this,” Ms Moore said.

But the familiarity between the young women and the persons they sleep with creates a worrying situation which places teens in the Bahamas as one of the groups most at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS.
