College Professor Told To Stop Teaching About Prostitution, Or Else | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Dr. Patricia Adler, who teaches a popular course on the topic of deviance at the University of Colorado, Boulder, was recently warned by university administrators that she must stop giving her regular lecture on prostitution, or run the risk of being fired and losing her retirement benefits. Adler, who has reportedly given this lecture forty times over the last two decades, was stunned by this development, as were many college faculty members around the world, myself included.

Why Do (Some) Feminists Struggle With The Notion Of Sex Work? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Certainly not all feminists embrace sex work, but the issue is very much one of feminism. Recently, I found this conversation at Tumblr which illustrates a classic feminist conversation about sex work.

Reporting on ROSE: A Journalist’s Work In Phoenix | Sex Work | Scoop.it

We often have cause to complain about media coverage of sex work, but we haven’t had occasion to talk about how good stories can be edited into inadequate ones as they travel from reporter to final outlet. The fate of Jordan Flaherty‘s story about Project ROSE (Reaching Out to the Sexually Exploited) is a great opportunity to look at what happens when a journalist tries to show the public the whole story but is met with resistance from his employer.

California Is The Only State That Treats Rape Victims This Way (Update) | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Spurred by emotional testimony from sex workers, California officials voted Thursday to change a 1990s-era anti-crime regulation and allow prostitutes to receive money from a victim compensation fund if they're raped or beaten.

Under the current system, those harmed in violent crimes can be paid for medical costs and related expenses, but prostitutes are excluded because their activities are illegal.

Questioning assumptions about sex work

Questioning assumptions about sex work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

But what if sex workers were seen as allies in a broader movement towards redressing community attitudes that support gendered stereotypes?

As a PhD student, I was privileged to undertake research into how women sex workers responded to various understandings about who they are as people and as sex workers. Far from simply colluding with a patriarchal model that positions their worth (and bodies) as vessels for the so-called ‘male sex drive’ (whether that’s seen as essential or socially constructed) they saw themselves as resisting, challenging and changing how some men viewed them and other women – not despite their sex work, but through it.

Warning: A Low Battery Can Be A Threat To Your PSO Business

Warning: A Low Battery Can Be A Threat To Your PSO Business | Sex Work | Scoop.it

An associate of mine recently reviewed a couple of cell phone battery chargers (here and here) and I was reminded, yet again, of how my favorite Bluetooth headset battery has a much shorter life than my smartphone. The difference in battery life could mean the headset would “die”, resulting in dropped calls — if I wasn’t prepared ahead of time for very long calls. “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail,” is a huge motto of mine, so I believe in back-up plans for the back-up plan.

XBIZ 360 to Examine ‘The Disruption of Porn’

XBIZ 360 to Examine ‘The Disruption of Porn’ | Sex Work | Scoop.it
XBIZ will examine the factors affecting modern-day porn and what they mean to consumers and industry professionals alike in a special seminar at the XBIZ 360 Adult Film Conference next week.
Gracie Passette's insight:

Jiz Lee, a genderqueer pron star & writer, will moderate the session:

“In the absence of comprehensive sex education, people use porn to learn about sex—what sex looks like, who gets to have it, and what it means to be sexy,” Lee said. “On its own, that's fine. But a limited example of what porn is has the danger in dictating what's 'normal,’ raising issues in our understanding of sexual health, and also our sexual psyche. Diversity in porn lets us find ourselves in the erotic landscape, proving we are all capable and deserving of love."

Reading gender: On Gloria Steinem's latest collection of articles

Reading gender: On Gloria Steinem's latest collection of articles | Sex Work | Scoop.it

This is also the Gloria Steinem the world has known for decades now. It’s seen her become an icon for women across the world, changing lives and thought processes. Earlier this week, Steinem released a compilation of her readings, titled “The Essential Gloria Steinem Reader: As if Women Matter”. Published by Rupa in English and Rajkamal publications in Hindi, the reader contains an introduction by Ruchira Gupta, Founder President of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, an NGO that works against sex trafficking. Gupta has also edited the compilation. The book contains a new essay by Steinem on sex trafficking, titled “The Third Way — An End of Trafficking and Prostitution: A Beginning of Mutual Sexuality”, along with other pieces written by the feminist and activist over decades of work with gender and violence. The essays address issues like gender inequality, marginalisation and violence, and approach each question from viewpoint that can be at once universal and context-specific.

Canada's Sex Work Laws: Don't Break What We Worked So Hard to Fix

Canada's Sex Work Laws: Don't Break What We Worked So Hard to Fix | Sex Work | Scoop.it

With the momentous decision from the Supreme Court on December 20, Canada's highest judicial authority confirmed what sex workers had known for many years: three of the laws restricting our trade were unconstitutional, and were decisively struck down. In their ruling, the Supreme Court of Canada left no doubt that these laws were not only ineffective, but dangerous; the SCC also told Parliament, in no uncertain terms, that watered-down versions of the same laws would not be acceptable replacements.

The court included a one-year stay of proceedings before the existing laws are to come off the books, ostensibly for Parliament to draft new laws. I have already written extensively on the five reasons that criminalization of the clients is unwise; further to that point, it is my contention that no new laws are required. The existing provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada are more than adequate to allow law enforcement to target the more harmful circumstances connected to prostitution, while simultaneously allowing consenting adults to do as we choose in the privacy of our own homes.

When it comes to prostitution, there are three aspects of sex work that the public finds most intolerable: the exploitation of children and youth, illegal trafficking in persons against their will, and disruptive displays of sexual solicitation. Each of these aspects are adequately covered by existing Criminal Code provisions,

Sex work is a game of risk, repeated outings and marginalisation | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The discrimination I face, both because of my work and as an activist, are compounded in complex ways by the fact that I am both queer and a sex worker. Yet each is distinctly different and cannot be compared. Queer and sex work communities are diverse and no-one should attempt to speak to collective experience – I speak to my lived experience only.
