How The Publishers Of Advocate & Out Use Porn Sites To Inflate Traffic And Deceive Advertisers

How The Publishers Of Advocate & Out Use Porn Sites To Inflate Traffic And Deceive Advertisers | Sex Work | Scoop.it
You know those annoying "pop-under" advertisements that appear behind your favorite porn sites that distract you from the matter at hand? Viewers may be surprised to see the home pages of Out.com and Advocate.com appear as pop-unders (see browser tabs on screen shot, right), behind such X-rated fare on PornHub.com as Hospital Gangbang and Mature Blake Tops Silver Daddy.…
Gracie Passette's insight:

Hmm, this rather shady practice is all too common in many sites trying to boost their numbers... What is rather remarkable is that the (rather one-sided) mainstream & adult mix is not denied.

Getting down to it with a phone sex operator

Getting down to it with a phone sex operator | Sex Work | Scoop.it

When you think about the sex industry you might immediately think of the billions of videos and the billions and billions of images that populate the web. But what about phone sex? In a world where porn is easier and easier to find, is there still pleasure in the imagination?

During a casual night out with friends we started a conversation with a couple of strangers. Everything was very typically friendly until one fuel-filled sentence sparked an exciting interview.

In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty

In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Ms. Pao, born biologically male, started dressing like a girl since age 7, she recounts. Shunned by her family, Ms. Pao moved to Phnom Penh and became a sex worker.

“It’s…a hard story to hear,” Mr. Hem said.

The film, a year in the making, was written, directed and produced by Mr. Hem, with the help of three volunteers. It centers on the intimacy between the two women in the face of societal rejection.

“I don’t think that the people or the government care about [transgender people] because they get exploited a lot and they don’t have equal rights, so I need to raise this issue,” the 29-year-old filmmaker said. “Through my research—I interviewed 50 ladyboys—they have very similar stories: They have no job opportunities, no education, sometimes [not] even health service…. Year by year it a little bit gets better, but I still see these kind of issues [are] still a big problem.”

Rape culture in our city: An open letter to St. John’s

Rape culture in our city: An open letter to St. John’s | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Media coverage of reports of gang rapes in St. John's has directed many to contemplate their moral stance on sex work, instead of their moral stance on rape and the appropriate police response to the rape of any person.
Gracie Passette's insight:

THIS:

"But for those of us who are not sex workers, does it really matter that we know the exact profession of those who were assaulted (ok, let’s call it what it is: gang raped and sodomized)? If hairdressers had been the ones reporting the crimes would the headlines have read, “Hairdressers given warning among gang rape reports”? Probably not."

New research suggests sex workers don’t feel exploited, most buyers aren’t oppressors

New research suggests sex workers don’t feel exploited, most buyers aren’t oppressors | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Sex-workers and sex-buyers aren’t who we thought they were, the first national report on the Canadian sex industry has found, only one of the findings from the five-year study, led by Cecilia Benoit of the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC).

Evidence from the six surveyed sites (St. John’s, Montréal, Kitchener, Fort McMurray, Calgary, and Victoria) suggests that the majority of sex workers—most of whom are Canadian-born, Caucasian, in their 30s or 40s and have some form of education or training beyond high school—do not feel exploited and say that most buyers are not oppressors.

Putting Hypersexuality to Work: Black Women and Illicit Eroticism in Pornography

Putting Hypersexuality to Work: Black Women and Illicit Eroticism in Pornography | Sex Work | Scoop.it

"This article focuses on the labor marginalization of black female performers within the pornography industry. Their representations and experiences as sex workers are shaped by a racialized and gendered sexual commerce where stereotypes, structural inequalities, and social biases are the norm. Black women are devalued as hyperaccessible and superdisposable in an industry that simultaneously invests in and ghettoizes fantasies about black sexuality. In light of feminist arguments against the victimization of women by pornography, I have attempted to show that black sex workers, while facing multiple axes of discrimination and harm, also employ hypersexuality and illicit eroticism to achieve mobility, erotic autonomy, and self-care."

Sexwork Cyber Resource Center: What to do if you are visited or stopped by the police. | Sex Work | Scoop.it

What to do if you are visited or stopped by the police. First, and most important, in an encounter with the police:

  • DO NOT physically resist or threaten the officer(s) in any way.
  • DO NOT try to leave until an officer tells you that you are free to go.
  • DO NOT give the officer any information about any of your activities.
  • DO NOT consent to any search.

Calling All Superheroes - We're Looking for 2014's Top Sex Bloggers

Calling All Superheroes - We're Looking for 2014's Top Sex Bloggers | Sex Work | Scoop.it

It’s that time of year again and we’re on the hunt for the Sex Blogging Superheroes of 2014. We’re looking for writers with charisma and courage, writers who are on a mission to promote sex positivity and save the world from bad sex. Because when you think about it, that job is pretty damned heroic. After all, the vast majority of people would choose rushing into a burning building over uttering words like "orgasm" or "clitoris" or "anal sex" in a public setting.

Suppressed again? Feminism in London conference excludes sex workers from panel on sex work | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A guest post from SWOU (Sex Worker Open University) about the failure of the upcoming 'Feminism in London' conference to include any sex workers on its sex work panel.

Upcoming autumn event Feminism in London is planning to hold a panel discussion about sex work -- without having any current sex workers on the panel. Ironically, this sex worker-free sex work panel was originally called "Suppressed Voices"..

Gracie Passette's insight:

Maybe it's not censorship; but it sure ain't discussion or problem solving now is it.
