Monthly sex worker tests are ridiculous, health experts say (2011)

Monthly sex worker tests are ridiculous, health experts say (2011) | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Health Minister David Davis has backed down from a plan for Victorian sex workers to have fewer tests for sexually transmitted infections, prompting sharp criticism from public health experts who say the plan should go ahead.

...Professor of Sexual Health at Melbourne University, Christopher Fairley, said research showed monthly testing was unnecessary and a waste of public health resources because sex workers have much lower rates of STIs than other people. This was backed by a recent study of patients at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre which showed that of 2896 female sex workers tested for STIs over three years, only 3 per cent were positive.

I am not a perfect victim

I am not a perfect victim | Sex Work | Scoop.it
I am not a perfect victim. If, heaven forbid, anything ever happened to me, the new reports would not read “Rain DeGrey, wife, writer and activist, loving owner of 2 dogs and 2 cats” but rather “Rain DeGrey BDSM porn star” and that label skews everything else you might read. I would, in some way, *deserve* whatever happened to me because of my day job.

I never factored in that when I decided to become a Professional Naked Person that I would be trading in some basic rights as a result.

@Brandal Nicole Crenshaw I suggest you do some reading... I have a whole topic about sex work. http://www.scoop.it/t/sex-work
Gracie Passette's comment, March 28, 2:16 AM
As for the "How do you know that the prostitutes are willing, healthy, and receiving actual benefits instead of spreading illnesses, being forced into it, or simply doing it because they have no other option" questions, those can be asked of any job sector.

Slavery of any sort is vile; why only focus on the sexual sort?

Having work designated as criminal prevents actual victims from coming forward and getting out/help. It also prevents willing sex workers from getting help in areas of real criminal activity, such as rape ~ and includes murder investigations too.

As for the "Is this something that we want to have future generations come to see as acceptable", I say "Why not?"

What about sexual autonomy is so frightening that it should be outlawed & manipulated? There are plenty of other types of work which people object to.

Support Christina Parreira, a Sex Worker & Sociology PhD student researching legal brothels | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Hi! My name is Christina Parreira and I am a Sociology PhD student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I am also an out sex worker, an activist, an instructor, and researcher. I am currently working on a project that involves interviewing legal brothel workers in Nevada, and hope to eventually continue this research internationally (but, that's still a ways off!)

What I need help with NOW is funding to get me to various conferences where I will be presenting my data, including an international prostitution conference in Vienna, Austria (Prospol conference) and the AAG meeting in Chicago (Association of American Geographers). In Vienna I will be presenting on the topic of bodily labor in sex work, and in Chicago I will be presenting on the geographies of the brothels, including a discussion of regulation of sexual spaces and segregation of sex workers.

Women Who Pay For Sex ~ Mara Speaks

Women Who Pay For Sex ~ Mara Speaks | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Dear Maggie,

I’m a middle aged lesbian-leaning bisexual academic who identifies as a feminist.  Your blog came to my attention a few years ago via Twitter, and your daily digest of police state violence against sex workers is an essential part of my political reading.  While you have a wide array of discussions on your blog and in the comment threads, I have noticed one voice missing:  That of The Jane.  Or at least, This Jane.

I am a woman who has paid for sex and I liked it.  If I were a rich woman, I would unabashedly procure sexual services from providers of various genders.  If I were powerful enough, I would be honest and unashamed by such too.

Gracie Passette's insight:

A voice not often heard from!

The Implications of Phone Sex For the Male Caller

The Implications of Phone Sex For the Male Caller | Sex Work | Scoop.it

I want to say, first of all, that I am not a fundamentalist Christian, a sexual Puritan, or anything of the sort. Secondly, I want to say that I understand that some women -especially in this severe recession- are increasingly desperate to earn money to help support their families.
Having said this, I want to ask a question of the women who frequent this forum who a) have worked in phone sex, or b) are interested in joining the phone sex industry: do you ever consider the implications of phone sex for the men who are paying for phone sex?
I know men who have had their marriages almost destroyed because of their indulgence in phone sex -something that many women consider to be "cheating." I've known men who have spent thousands of dollars -often money they really couldn't afford to spend- on phone sex, and who suffered severe economic consequences as a result. (The U.S. Federal Minimum Wage is $7.20 an HOUR, while many phone sex companies are charging men $2.50 per MINUTE, or more.)

Does nobody see this business as exploitative? As morally questionable?

I've read occasionally about the psychological toll that working as a pso can take on a woman. What is not given voice to -based on my experience anyways- is the psychological toll that can be taken on the clients who frequent this sort of service.

Again, I know several men who have been very deeply hurt emotionally as a result of their ongoing indulgence in phone sex, with a pso they believed they had developed a "relationship" with.

Gracie Passette's insight:

I would have replied, but the two that did covered it really well.

Red-Blooded Thing: Pros

Red-Blooded Thing: Pros | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Pretty Woman, Milk Money, Risky Business, they all make prostitutes out to be mystical, complex creatures that exist outside of normal reality and when you cross paths with one your life will change, when in reality there's an exchange of services for money in a unmagical capitalistic way. On the other hand, the opposite view of prostitutes as dirty, dangerous, and harmful is similarly counteracted by legalization's emphasis on health and cleanliness.
