How Big is the Pornography Industry in the United States? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Determining the size of the United States pornography industry is no simple task. A perfect picture of how large the pornography industry is would require accurate revenue reports from every entity which produces and distributes pornography. Unfortunately, this specific information is not readily available. Instead, we must rely on statistics and information gathered from a variety of sources over several years.

Gender differences amongst sex workers online

Gender differences amongst sex workers online | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Two weeks ago the UK’s Office of National Statistics (ONS) announced that
the UK economy had grown by 0.9% in the second quarter of 2014. This growth
was partly due to the decision to include prostitution in gross domestic
product (GDP) for the first time ever.

The ONS estimate that Britain’s 60,879 prostitutes contribute £5.314bn
(0.4% GDP) to the UK economy.  But, this figure completely ignores male
prostitution.  In a previous post we used data from AdultWork, a popular

Teenagers may not have the full capacity to consent or bear as full a responsibility for their actions as adults do, but they're not mentally incapacitated. The government shouldn't be able to lock up a 15-year-old girl 'til her 18th birthday to stop her from having sex in a way of which it disapproves.

The Sessions--the 2012 film about a polio patient who hires a “sex surrogate” to help him lose his virginitywon praise for humanizing a sex worker and her severely disabled client. But a new paper by Kirsty Liddiard, a sociologist at the UK’s University of Sheffield, provides a much more revealing window into the experiences of disabled men who pay for sex.

Examples of euphemisms overused in #romance #novels

Examples of euphemisms overused in #romance #novels | Sex Work | Scoop.it
When it comes to fiction, particularly romance, writers are in grave danger of using silly words and cheesy euphemisms to sound more poetic. Let’s face it, saying penis, vagina, and mammary glands is not very romantic. Bad descriptions of private parts and how they interact are also the result of trying desperately to avoid ‘dirty’ words: most notably the ‘p’ word or ‘c’ word for women, the ‘c’ word or ‘d’ word for men, and the ‘f’ word for the deed itself.

You know those annoying "pop-under" advertisements that appear behind your favorite porn sites that distract you from the matter at hand? In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty

In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Ms. Pao, born biologically male, started dressing like a girl since age 7, she recounts. Shunned by her family, Ms. Pao moved to Phnom Penh and became a sex worker.

“It’s…a hard story to hear,” Mr. Hem said.

The film, a year in the making, was written, directed and produced by Mr. Hem, with the help of three volunteers. It centers on the intimacy between the two women in the face of societal rejection.

“I don’t think that the people or the government care about [transgender people] because they get exploited a lot and they don’t have equal rights, so I need to raise this issue,” the 29-year-old filmmaker said. “Through my research—I interviewed 50 ladyboys—they have very similar stories: They have no job opportunities, no education, sometimes [not] even health service…. Year by year it a little bit gets better, but I still see these kind of issues [are] still a big problem.”

Rape culture in our city: An open letter to St. John’s

Rape culture in our city: An open letter to St. John’s | Sex Work | Scoop.it
Media coverage of reports of gang rapes in St. John's has directed many to contemplate their moral stance on sex work, instead of their moral stance on rape and the appropriate police response to the rape of any person.
Gracie Passette's insight:

THIS:

"But for those of us who are not sex workers, does it really matter that we know the exact profession of those who were assaulted (ok, let’s call it what it is: gang raped and sodomized)? If hairdressers had been the ones reporting the crimes would the headlines have read, “Hairdressers given warning among gang rape reports”? Probably not."

New research suggests sex workers don’t feel exploited, most buyers aren’t oppressors

New research suggests sex workers don’t feel exploited, most buyers aren’t oppressors | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Sex-workers and sex-buyers aren’t who we thought they were, the first national report on the Canadian sex industry has found, only one of the findings from the five-year study, led by Cecilia Benoit of the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC).

Evidence from the six surveyed sites (St. John’s, Montréal, Kitchener, Fort McMurray, Calgary, and Victoria) suggests that the majority of sex workers—most of whom are Canadian-born, Caucasian, in their 30s or 40s and have some form of education or training beyond high school—do not feel exploited and say that most buyers are not oppressors.

Putting Hypersexuality to Work: Black Women and Illicit Eroticism in Pornography

Putting Hypersexuality to Work: Black Women and Illicit Eroticism in Pornography | Sex Work | Scoop.it

"This article focuses on the labor marginalization of black female performers within the pornography industry. Their representations and experiences as sex workers are shaped by a racialized and gendered sexual commerce where stereotypes, structural inequalities, and social biases are the norm. Black women are devalued as hyperaccessible and superdisposable in an industry that simultaneously invests in and ghettoizes fantasies about black sexuality. In light of feminist arguments against the victimization of women by pornography, I have attempted to show that black sex workers, while facing multiple axes of discrimination and harm, also employ hypersexuality and illicit eroticism to achieve mobility, erotic autonomy, and self-care."
