Gracie Passette's curator insight, November 17, 2015 8:02 PM

"It took a long time to figure out what was bothering me about my job, but after listening to some restaurant industry friends complain about their patrons, it struck me. Nobody, not a single caller, had ever said, “Thank you.”

And none of them had ever said, “Goodbye.”

They were so thoroughly wrapped up in their exhibitionism, in themselves, that I might as well have been a pre-recorded moaning device. And while I didn’t exactly expect callers to care about me as a human being, night after night filled with dozens of people hanging up on me mid-sentence as though I didn’t exist started to really hurt my self esteem and self confidence."

Denver jury awards $3.9M to former stripper who sued wealthy rancher

Denver jury awards $3.9M to former stripper who sued wealthy rancher | Sex Work | Scoop.it
The judge presiding over the civil trial called the attack "indescribably brutal," but in 2013 Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey chose to drop the original criminal charge to misdemeanor unlawful contact instead of felony sexual assault.

The victim, Amanda Wilson, and her attorney, Qusair Mohamedbhai, told The Denver Post the verdict announced late last week was a victory for other sexual assault victims. And they criticized the district attorney's office for failing to prosecute her attacker on more serious charges for the February 2013 attack.

"I hope this verdict is empowering to any woman or person who has felt helpless and terrified at the hands of another," Wilson, 30, wrote in an e-mail to The Post. "Rape destroys lives and it does matter, even when the criminal justice system brushes you off and prefers you to be quiet. You do matter."

The case is unusual for many reasons, including its large verdict and because a jury took the word of a former exotic dancer over that of a respected businessman who had lavished her with gifts, money and a job, court observers said.

What Did Busting Rentboy.com Do to the Hustler Economy? 6 Rentboys Tell All

What Did Busting Rentboy.com Do to the Hustler Economy? 6 Rentboys Tell All | Sex Work | Scoop.it

On August 25, the feds shut down Rentboy.com, declaring it an "internet brothel." The website, which was founded in 1996, featured the paid profiles of male escorts and enabled potential customers to contact them directly. It made escorting more entrepreneurial, more private, and almost certainly less dangerous, since it didn't involve frequenting shady locations to attract clientele or payoffs to anyone pimplike. Other sites, like Rentmen.com (which, unlike Rentboy, is based outside the U.S., putting it out of the feds' reach), do basically the same thing. But Rentboy, which was based in New York but matched clients and escorts in cities worldwide, had the most cachet. It also provided community and harm-reduction workshops for its advertisers, and sponsored the Hookies, a tongue-in-cheek (ahem) industry awards ceremony. Many in the LGBT community, noting that the site had nothing to do with human trafficking and doubting whether there are any victims in this criminal activity, have rallied around the site, even starting a legal-defense fund for its operators.

A month on, how has it affected the Rentboys' ability to hustle? We talked to six of them (all of whom used their work names or requested anonymity) on what it's like to try to hook without the site behind the Hookies.

Why did the media fail to report on a groundbreaking study on the lives of people working in the sex industry?

Why did the media fail to report on a groundbreaking study on the lives of people working in the sex industry? | Sex Work | Scoop.it
On 30 January, a mesmerizing report was launched at the Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on HIV in Bangkok: The Right(s) Evidence—Sex Work, Violence And HIV In Asia: A Multi-Country Qualitative Study . It is a ground-breaking piece of work for several reasons. It involved an unusual collaboration among governments, sex-worker organizations, communities, UN agencies, and regional agencies in Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It is full of fascinating insights into the lives of women, men and transgender people in the sex industry. It finds compelling evidence of widespread violence. It provides thoughtful, evidence-based analysis on causes and possible solutions. It points to a culture of impunity among the police, doctors, and other powerful players that in turn increases the threats of violence, trauma, disease and despair among sex workers, and by extension their families, communities, and customers. It’s full of first-person accounts.

The ultimate juicy news story, and you’ve never heard of it.
Meena Saraswathi Seshu, secretary general of activist organization Sampada Gramin Mahila Sanstha (Sangram), one of the co-authors of the report, talked with me after I had read the report. I know Seshu. She is articulate, and smart. She knows both the media and the landscape of sex work, having organized sex workers for decades. She fully expected the report to create a splash, but instead, she told me, it was greeted with “absolute and total silence”.

“It was launched in Bangkok—nobody wrote about it. It was launched in Myanmar—nobody wrote about it. The UN distributes it—nobody writes about it. Media came to all the events. People from TV, people from newspapers—they interviewed people like the study’s interviewers, who were all sex workers themselves. And then nobody wrote about it.”

I think that the article brings up some good points. The sex trafficking victims, voluntary or not, should be protected and helped. Government funding is probably the only way they would be able to get any programs for that so not allowing government funding would hurt the people that were victimized.
