My Husband Is Bisexual! Now What?

My Husband Is Bisexual! Now What? | Sex Work | Scoop.it
A long time ago, in a land far far away there lived a Prince. He was charming, handsome, smart and rich – a real catch. Then, one day – he went to a ball in search of his soul mate. That’s when he instantly fell in love with a Princess, the most beautiful of all. Their eyes met and it was love that would last forever and ever… at least, that’s what we are told. Truth is, this glorified Prince had probably had another prince on the side already, the Princess had probably had an elf or another princess to fool around with too, but Disney never told us about that, did he now? Sure, it’s always easier to live an illusion than face reality. Until it slaps you in the face.

What Did Busting Rentboy.com Do to the Hustler Economy? 6 Rentboys Tell All

What Did Busting Rentboy.com Do to the Hustler Economy? 6 Rentboys Tell All | Sex Work | Scoop.it

On August 25, the feds shut down Rentboy.com, declaring it an "internet brothel." The website, which was founded in 1996, featured the paid profiles of male escorts and enabled potential customers to contact them directly. It made escorting more entrepreneurial, more private, and almost certainly less dangerous, since it didn't involve frequenting shady locations to attract clientele or payoffs to anyone pimplike. Other sites, like Rentmen.com (which, unlike Rentboy, is based outside the U.S., putting it out of the feds' reach), do basically the same thing. But Rentboy, which was based in New York but matched clients and escorts in cities worldwide, had the most cachet. It also provided community and harm-reduction workshops for its advertisers, and sponsored the Hookies, a tongue-in-cheek (ahem) industry awards ceremony. Many in the LGBT community, noting that the site had nothing to do with human trafficking and doubting whether there are any victims in this criminal activity, have rallied around the site, even starting a legal-defense fund for its operators.

A month on, how has it affected the Rentboys' ability to hustle? We talked to six of them (all of whom used their work names or requested anonymity) on what it's like to try to hook without the site behind the Hookies.

Meet the UK’s best-paid sex worker who's campaigning to rid prostitution of its stigma

Meet the UK’s best-paid sex worker who's campaigning to rid prostitution of its stigma | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Josh said there’s a negative attitude towards sex workers. He is now campaigning for the stigma attached to the industry to end. For him, being an escort is just like any regular job.

“It’s the most practiced since the dawn of man so I don’t understand why people have to make such a big deal of it like it’s some sacred cow.

“The only other job you can be in and learn so much about people is being a psychologist.”

In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty

In New Film, Transgender Sex Workers Battle Stigma, Poverty | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Ms. Pao, born biologically male, started dressing like a girl since age 7, she recounts. Shunned by her family, Ms. Pao moved to Phnom Penh and became a sex worker.

“It’s…a hard story to hear,” Mr. Hem said.

The film, a year in the making, was written, directed and produced by Mr. Hem, with the help of three volunteers. It centers on the intimacy between the two women in the face of societal rejection.

“I don’t think that the people or the government care about [transgender people] because they get exploited a lot and they don’t have equal rights, so I need to raise this issue,” the 29-year-old filmmaker said. “Through my research—I interviewed 50 ladyboys—they have very similar stories: They have no job opportunities, no education, sometimes [not] even health service…. Year by year it a little bit gets better, but I still see these kind of issues [are] still a big problem.”

Why Many Young Chinese Women Are Writing Gay Male Erotica

Why Many Young Chinese Women Are Writing Gay Male Erotica | Sex Work | Scoop.it

An antipornography campaign in China has netted many young female writers of danmei, erotic fiction focusing on relationships between gay men, a popular outlet for those seeking to escape stifling social identities, scholars say.

...Danmei is part of an ‘‘ongoing sexual revolution’’ with feminist characteristics in China, perhaps the country’s first, said a Chinese academic who requested anonymity. China is currently undergoing a crackdown on pornography that has netted danmei writers and website managers, and closed some sites, sexual rights advocates said. ‘‘The campaign is really having an impact,’’ the researcher said.

Creating and consuming danmei is a way for women to explore their long-repressed sexuality, said Ms. Jacobs.

‘‘I think Chinese culture is still harsh on women in terms of how far they can go in developing a fantasy life or erotic art forms,’’ she said. ‘‘I think they have to be very careful in coming out with their fantasies. The norm is stifling.’’

Normal Trailer EN

Normal is a 48 minute creative documentary that brings the real life stories of male, female and transgender migrants working in the sex industry to the screen. Drawing on original interviews with people working in the sex industry in Albania, Italy and the UK, documentary director and anthropologist Nicola Mai reveals their unheard voices.

In Tirana we meet Besnik, an Albanian young man who uses violence to stop his women getting under his skin. In Rome, Catalin is a Romanian minor selling sex to other men as it’s the best job he’s ever had. Having used violence in the past, Adrian, a Romanian young man, now respects his working girl to keep himself safe and out of jail. In London there’s Candy, a Romanian young woman who loves her trafficker to the point of getting convicted for controlling. Alina, a Moldovan woman, decides to work independently in the UK sex industry after having been trafficked. We also meet Cynthia, a transgender woman selling sex to feed her estranged family while waiting to fix her papers.

These voices often go against the grain of popular expectations that most migrant sex workers are exploited and forced to sell sex against their will. Confronting these attitudes, Normal uncovers a layered, human story of migration and sex work. What we hear are unexpected, disturbing, sometimes moving and often contradictory life stories. The viewer is continually challenged by the truth of their words, their dreams and the lives that they lead. All the characters are portrayed by actors, guaranteeing the anonymity and safety of the original interviewees

XBIZ 360 to Examine ‘The Disruption of Porn’

XBIZ 360 to Examine ‘The Disruption of Porn’ | Sex Work | Scoop.it
XBIZ will examine the factors affecting modern-day porn and what they mean to consumers and industry professionals alike in a special seminar at the XBIZ 360 Adult Film Conference next week.
Gracie Passette's insight:

Jiz Lee, a genderqueer pron star & writer, will moderate the session:

“In the absence of comprehensive sex education, people use porn to learn about sex—what sex looks like, who gets to have it, and what it means to be sexy,” Lee said. “On its own, that's fine. But a limited example of what porn is has the danger in dictating what's 'normal,’ raising issues in our understanding of sexual health, and also our sexual psyche. Diversity in porn lets us find ourselves in the erotic landscape, proving we are all capable and deserving of love."

Movie Review: 'Concussion' combines a sense of style with sex

Movie Review: 'Concussion' combines a sense of style with sex | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Stacie Passon becomes Eleanor, a high-priced prostitute entertaining female clients in the work-in-progress apartment.

Like Catherine Deneuve's character in "Belle de Jour," Abby isn't in it for the money. Her work as Eleanor frees something in her and connects her with a power she didn't know she had. Writer-director Passon uses a series of tastefully explicit encounters with clients — some less telling than others — to examine aspects of her protagonist's personality: maternal, adventurous, take-charge.
