Adult Backwash's Place In Sex Blogging History

Adult Backwash's Place In Sex Blogging History | Sex Work | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, the brave Dangerous Lilly started a conversation about the history of sex blogging. Not long after that, GlamKitty (GK) (who did participate in the adult side of BW as a member of The Unholy Trinity) began waxing nostalgic about Backwash.com in general. It was these two conversations (one digital, one real world) which prompted me to get involved in the Backwash Reunion and agreeing to run Dark Wry Toast as a resurrection, of sorts, of Adult Backwash.

While I (impatiently) waited for GK to make her post, so that I wouldn’t have to repeat too much, I thought about the reasons Adult Backwash deserves to be remembered.

Strippers Protest Censorship, 1959 | Sex Work | Scoop.it

“T’aint fair” reads one of the signs held by protesters of newspaper censorship in 1959. Was that a pun? Could very well have been as a lot of the signs are rather clever with the wordplay. These vintage magazine pages were found...

Human Rights for Sex Workers: An Interview with Melinda Chateauvert

Human Rights for Sex Workers: An Interview with Melinda Chateauvert | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Fifty countries treat sex work as a legitimate job, and it has been legalized with restrictions in eleven others. Nevertheless sex workers are still widely stigmatized, discriminated against, harassed, and, in those countries where prostitution is considered illegal, treated as criminals. This is especially true in the United States, which is one of the few industrialized nations that continues to criminalize prostitution. As Melinda Chateauvert reveals in her new book Sex Workers Unite: A History of the Movement from Stonewall to Slutwalk, these laws have put sex workers at risk.

Chateauvert agreed recently to talk with us about Human Rights Day and how important it is that the international campaign for human rights include sex workers, who have always been key activists in the struggles for gay liberation, women’s rights, reproductive justice, labor organizing, prison abolition, and other human rights–related issues.

Is Wearing Vintage Fashions Feminist? (Or, Sign Of The Times 1948)

Is Wearing Vintage Fashions Feminist? (Or, Sign Of The Times 1948) | Sex Work | Scoop.it

At my vintage living blog, Things Your Grandmother Knew, I’ve written about the tendency to romanticize the past, but I recently read two blog posts discussing vintage fashion in terms of “the vintage girl being the new feminist” and thought it was time to discuss the subject from a more feminist angle…

Peek-A-Boob: Video Vamp (Lynn Muscarella) Phone Sex Cable TV Show (Playboy, June 1992) | Sex Work | Scoop.it

Nestled in the clutter of Manhattan's late-night television fare is the ultimate in safe sex for the cable-ready: Voyeurvision, the nation's only live call-in tele-fantasy show. Four nights a week, Lynn Muscarella, the show's campy, vampy hostess, slithers over the sheets while encouraging her phone fans to flesh out their sexiest fantasies. Most, not surprisingly, involve her - which delights the Brooklyn-bred Muscarella. She jokes, teases, pouts, writhes - even blushes. "I'm your video game," she coos to a caller. "Tell me what you want."

Why the Sex Positive Movement is Bad for Sex Workers’ Rights

Why the Sex Positive Movement is Bad for Sex Workers’ Rights | Sex Work | Scoop.it

During the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and the sex wars of the 1980s and 1990s, the struggle to define sex positivity with respect to sex work served a purpose. To say that not all people have a horrendous experience of the sex industry, and that many sex workers value sexuality and see themselves as complex sexual beings as well as sex educators was an important statement to make, and one that had not been spoken before. However, it is essential to put this statement in historical context. To continue making the statement that many sex workers have a good experience of the sex industry without also including those whose experiences are negative and making space for them to speak up reveals a deep doubt about the validity of the sex positive argument. If we believe in the positive power of sexuality, we must also examine what happens when people’s lives are infused with sex negativity, and we must listen and support people with this experience in sharing their personal truths.

Gracie Passette's insight:

An excellent article by Audacia Ray. A must read, espescially for privileged (aka white cis females).

Emmanuelle star dies at 60

Emmanuelle star dies at 60 | Sex Work | Scoop.it

KRISTEL, who formerly lived with Lovejoy star Ian McShane, scored fame with 70s soft porn Emmanuelle movies...

STAR of the ‘70s soft porn Emmanuelle movies Sylvia Kristel has died at the age of 60.

The Dutch-born actress passed away in her sleep last night after a ten-year battle with cancer.

Kristel starred in five Emmanuelle films between 1974 and 1993 and another six TV spin-offs.

The series of French-made erotic movies are famed for bringing soft-

core pornography to mainstream cinema.

She also became famous for her steamy nude scenes in another 40 films, starring in the lead roles in X-rated versions of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and World War One spy drama Mata Hari.

Kristel – a heavy smoker since the age of 11 – was also treated for lung cancer ten years ago and managed to make a partial recovery.

She lived with Lovejoy star Ian McShane in the 1980s in LA but split after four years and moved to St Tropez in France.

Her 2006 autobiography Undressing Emmanuelle told of a personal life blighted by battles with drugs and alcohol, as well as a series of destructive relationships with older men.

She branded her relationship with McShane as “awful”, adding: “He was witty and charming but we were too much alike.”

Kristel had recently been released from hospital in Amsterdam after suffering a massive heart failure in July.

She leaves one son who she had with Belgian author Hugo Claus, 27 years her senior.

Film Pairings — Murder Among the Prostitutes

Film Pairings — Murder Among the Prostitutes | Sex Work | Scoop.it

"In the 1970s, Americans were very much obsessed with sex — either scared out of their wits by the sudden hedonism or thrilled by the increasing disintegration of taboos essentially based on superstition."

Curator comment:  this is a brief review suggesting that "Klute" and "American Gigolo" were movies that "not only reflected but may also have helped bring about the cultural shift in America’s views of sexuality".

Source: Life, Death and Fog, observations by the mystery and crime fiction writer Ronald Tierney.

Servant of God, or Prostitute?

Servant of God, or Prostitute? | Sex Work | Scoop.it

The Devadasi, a centuries-old caste of sacred temple priestesses, struggles to have it's own renaissance. One woman leads the way...

The origins of the practice are often disputed, but historians agree that in India by the 10th century this caste of sacred temple servants enjoyed great wealth & property as signs of respect & clout.

Considered married to the Hindu deities, the Devadasi were talented dancers, singers & even viewed as political advisors. At the core of Devadasi faith is the belief all men are incarnations of the male deities & so in addition to performing sacred temple ceremonies, Devadasis offered sexual services. In the act of making love, a man & a Devadasi enact the sacred marriage of god & goddess which therefore allows them to become divine themselves.
