Supreme Court helps Obama correct course in the fight against AIDS — MSNBC

Supreme Court helps Obama correct course in the fight against AIDS — MSNBC | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

It hasn’t drawn as much attention as targeted killing, warrantless wiretapping, the ill treatment of Guantanamo prisoners, or White House meddling with the drug approval process. But the Obama administration’s dogged defense of the so-called “anti-prostitution pledge” has puzzled progressives as much as any policy in this president’s Bush-like second term.

The pledge law, adopted in 2003 to appease religious conservatives, bars U.S. support for any international health group that fails to speak out against prostitution—even if its clients are sex workers. Organizations as varied as UNAIDS,  the World Bank and the World Health Organization have condemned the rule for undermining the fight against HIV/AIDS, but Obama’s Justice Department hasn’t budged.

Now, thanks to a new Supreme Court decision, the pledge will finally be scrubbed from the books. In a Thursday morning decision, the court declared that the anti-prostitution pledge violates the constitution’s First Amendment. As Chief Justice John Roberts helpfully pointed out, that’s the one that “prohibits the government from telling people what they must say.”

Catching Women. A Guide For Trappers and Hunters.

All this is about sex as warfare or as a hunt.  The beautiful women are the prey, the object is to get them in bed, and the advice the PUAs give is all about that.  The scoring is based on how many one-night stands a man can get, preferably with women who weren't that much into him in the first place.  And the basic trick is male dominance.  You pretend to be a dominant alpha male, and then you get all the pu**y that rightly belongs to you.

Sex-Ed For Graybeards

Sex-Ed For Graybeards | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The truth is slowly dawning on American women that those dear men, perhaps husbands, fathers, or grandfathers, are demonstrating a lack in their education, specifically in their sex-ed, whether it was taught to them by their own fathers, older brothers, or the big boys who stood out on the street corners of their home towns. The poor fellows simply don't know any better! However, they are more than happy to display their ignorance at every opportunity. All one has to do is to stick a microphone in their faces and start asking them questions about some of the foremost debates of the day.

Thus, this old lady, being immune to the fear of death and too jaded to worry about any retaliation, will undertake the task of informing them of those lessons they missed. First, they are not to blame. Traditionally, the sex education of boys has fallen to either fathers or gym coaches -- most of whom suffered from the same ignorance of the subject or were too embarrassed to discuss the topic with the wide-open and expectant faces of the pubescent boys who were so eager to learn. I'm not talking about the "how-to" of the subect. That comes naturally and few boys require any assistance in mastering it.

French geographers publish global atlas on sexuality

French geographers publish global atlas on sexuality | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Where are people most unfaithful? Who uses sex toys? On a darker level, where is child rape more prevalent? French geographers have tried to answer these questions and others in a global atlas on sexuality.

From legislation and the dynamics of couples to prostitution and violence, the book maps out the evolution of sexual habits and acts around the world by collating various surveys, figures and reports already available.

“Sexuality is everywhere on our city walls and on our screens, in lighter news or in darker events,” said Nadine Cattan, research director in geography at France’s National Center for Scientific Research.

According to the Newar tradition, young girls are married to Bael, which is the symbol of Subarna Kumar. The fruit is considered to be without any flaw and if a young girl gets married to it before her menstruation starts, she will never be considered a divorcee or a widow according to the religion.

...After the ceremony is completed, the young girls are kept in a dark room for 12 days and taught sex education.

You mentioned having a feminist girlfriend which made porn a no-no. Most of us know the history of feminism and pornography — which most people prefer to describe in terms of “feminists say porn bad”. There were actually various distinctions (between porn and erotica, and between feminist thinkers as well), but in your case, you had a feminist girlfriend who actually said porn was a no-no?

The Erotics of Invisibility

The Erotics of Invisibility | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

This is paper I wrote on lesbian visibility and eroticism for a class on Renaissance literature and history in 2011. It is very dense– but perhaps still enjoyable.

...What I argue is that this invisibility of female homosexuality is not merely a result of the historical distance from the period, but rather a consciously acknowledged component of the understanding of female same-sex erotic desire at the time. In “Sappho to Philaenis,” the secrecy and immaculateness of the title characters’ sexual activity operates as one of Donne’s central arguments for the superiority of a female-female sexual relationship.

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

I teach an undergraduate seminar on “Gender, Sexuality, and Popular Culture” with a unit on the romance genre. This year, for the first time ever, the class consists entirely of women. Also new this year is an exercise we invented of an online, collaborative romance narrative. One question that came up in our writing experiment was how, when, and why to include sex scenes. We talked a lot about depictions of sexuality in romance fiction, as well as in the sex-saturated corridors of popular culture. How are the love scenes in romance different from those in pornography or erotica?

...I’m interested in the notion that a feminist is a woman who writes—a woman who dares explore ideas and fantasies that run contrary to patriarchal scripts for feminine docility, submissiveness, and sexual passivity. These scripts are still alive in the impossible contradictions and double standards my students report: be sexy but also pure, demands the culture. If guys sleep around it’s a sign of mastery and control, but if you do it you’re a slut.

Men, Women, and Society: Do women really hold all sexual power?

Men, Women, and Society: Do women really hold all sexual power? | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

There is a lot of bullshit in the mainstream media. I find it especially irritating when clearly subjective opinions are presented in an allegedly objective manner by people who have a hidden agenda. One such example is the claim that women have all the sexual power in the world. Of course they don't. (Hint: it's mutual).

There is a longer backstory behind this post, and it seems worthwhile discussing it openly. I recently took an online course in Behavioral Economics on Coursera. The teacher, Dan Ariely, is knowledgeable and also lovingly flippant at times. For instance, he started every lecture with an inappropriate joke, and plenty of the examples he used might have easily offended some people's sensibilities. As a bonus, there were guest lectures at the end of each week, given by professors teaching in behavioral economics or related disciplines like psychology.

In week 2, though, I saw some giddy woman in front of the camera, telling about her "research". She was making some rather daring statements, such as "women have all the sexual power", "women decide how soon in a relationship sex happens", or, my favorite, "men's sexuality has no worth". Of course, she referred to the mainstream media model of dating, according to which a guy has to wait three weeks before some chick will spread her legs for you. Needless to say, in her little world, this applies to "all women", and we as men are at their complete mercy.

I had a hearty laugh because I assumed Dan Ariely had put an actress on stage to drive the point home that sloppy reasoning quickly leads to absurd conclusions. I just didn't want to believe that a middle-aged woman with teenager-like antics and absurdly sloppy reasoning would really be a professor. The course was on irrational behavior in the context of economics or, more generally, decision-making, so it wouldn't have surprised me if she had been a mere actress, having had the purpose of cheering us up a little bit.

As it turned out, that woman was not an actress. Her name is Kathleen Vohs, and she's a professor of marketing at University of Minnesota. Here is the video, in case you are interested. Within the first few minutes you'll hear zingers like, "sex is a female resource", "men trade resources with women in exchange for sex", or the aforementioned "male sexuality has no value or worth". The video is about 20 minutes long. I nearly made it to the six-minute mark.

Makers And Stars Of Porn Being Turned Away By Some Banks

Makers And Stars Of Porn Being Turned Away By Some Banks | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Porn star Chanel Preston says that when she attempted to make a deposit into her new account, she learned it had been closed because of “compliance issues.”

She says that the manager who had helped her set up the account explained that the bank was worried about the live cam shows on her website and had decided to close the business account.

...Meanwhile, a former softcore porn producer in California is suing JPMorgan Chase after the bank refused to underwrite a loan for “moral reasons.”

The plaintiff — who actually sold his company several years ago — says it was the bank that had originally approached him about refinancing the loan, but after the refi got bogged down in months of delays, he eventually learned the truth.

In the suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the plaintiff states that Chase VP “finally informed plaintiff during a telephone conversation that plaintiff’s loan application was refused due to ‘moral reasons,’ because of JPMorgan’s disapproval of plaintiff’s former source of income and occupation as an owner of a television production company that produced television programs that dealt with the subject of human sexuality.”

He says the bank told him that Chase would be taking a “reputational risk” by going through with the loan.

“JPMorgan purports to be so ashamed of nudity and human sexuality that it cannot process a refinance of a home loan of plaintiff, secured by plaintiff’s house, because plaintiff’s source of income six years ago included production of television programs that contained nudity and human sexuality,” reads the complaint.

A newly restored print of the 1967 documentary comes to Chicago for a screening Wednesday at the Portage Theater (co-presented by the Northwest Chicago Film Society, Reeling and Black Cinema House).

Filmmaker Shirley Clarke (who shot the footage over 12 consecutive hours in the living room of her penthouse apartment in New York's Chelsea Hotel) has only one subject: Holliday himself, an otherwise anonymous raconteur who cannily subverts his outsider status — that of black gay man in the '60s who made his living as a houseboy (his term) — with a mirthful ability to spin a tale.

Tumblr Panic | The Marketing Whore

Tumblr Panic | The Marketing Whore | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

For adult webmasters and bloggers, the real ruckus started when Tumblr prepared itself for a Yahoo buy-out by appearing to purge itself of adult content. The micro-blogging site did this quite effectively when it dealt a dirty blow to Tumblr users by using robots.txt to exclude the search engines from indexing sites labeled as “adult”. This was reported in accurate detail by Bacchus at the long-respected ErosBlog. (it must be noted that Tumblr does not seem to be using the Robots Meta Tag. Do you know about robots.txt files and Robots Meta Tags?)

This was reported by Bacchus before anyone even had an idea that Yahoo & Tumblr were in talks. Just days later, Bacchus again discussed issues for adult bloggers at Tumblr, i.e. how difficult it became to even search your own Tumblr blog & how to back-up your Tumblr site. By this time, the rumors had become official news: Yahoo had purchased Tumblr.

Laura Brown's comment, May 24, 2013 11:02 PM
I noticed the difference on Tumblr early on. Links on other sites were leading to missing sites, or sites that just would not load. Where will the adult bloggers go next? Tumblr was a nice, simple place for them the past few years. I don't think they can move to WordPress.com as was suggested for other Tumblr bloggers who don't want to wait for Yahoo to drop.

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Following a discriminatory act based on their sexual orientation, a lesbian couple of Isle of Man wishes an anti-discriminatory law for LGBTQ people.

The landlord refused the rental agreement with Kara Izzard and Laura Cull because they are lesbians.

They have had then the bad surprise to discover that there is no law in Isle of Man to protect them in this kind of situation whereas civil unions and adoption are possible for same-sex couples.

"I was so shocked to hear this and felt sick, said Cull.

"I didn't know where to go or what to do as I didn't have a legal leg to stand on so after speaking with my partner Kira we thought that the only thing we could do was to share our story with as many people as possible and try and raise awareness that on this beautiful island that we call home we can still be treated this way."

Will the new definition mean we stop blaming addicts for their behaviors?

Via Julian Buchanan, Deanna Dahlsad

Julian Buchanan's curator insight, May 23, 2013 2:51 AM

Genetic determinism emerges once again ... Charles Darwin, Charles Murray, Sir Keith Joseph, Dr James Watson  .. and maybe they can now all support Barbara Harris who has a charity to pay drug using mothers to be sterilised - to stop the reproduction of this brain disorder?

So the poverty, inequality, abuse, unemployment, low self esteem, low achievement which feature disproportionately amongst people with patterns of problematic drug use is just a symptom?

The simple disease model of addiction really is making a worrying comeback.

Maybe people who commit crimes also have a brain disorder .... and people who display anti-social patterns of behaviour? So rampant capitalism with the obscene levels of inequality that create degenerate and hopeless environments for the poorest, excluded and disenfrachised - has not resulted in high levels of problem drug use at all - it's just that these people have got brain disorders!

Very convenient ....
