Laverne Cox flawlessly shuts down Katie Couric’s invasive questions about transgender people

Laverne Cox flawlessly shuts down Katie Couric’s invasive questions about transgender people | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

"The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people," the actress explained to Couric

Crystel Hamilton's curator insight, January 15, 3:17 PM

When Katie Couric questions Laverne Cox about her transition, Laverne positively redirects the question to something more important to her; educating the world about transgender issues.  The homicide rate is highest for trans women. If we always address the  transition, we don't focus on the other important issues.

Spanking Is Great for Sex. Which is why it’s grotesque for parenting. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Once again, I’ve been accused of pedophilia. Well, to be technical, my sexual identity was called “somewhat pedophilic.” But we’re talking about one of the most loathsome things a person can be accused of, so why split hairs? I’m also regularly told that my sexuality is “repulsive,” “damaged,” and “abusive.”...

Meet the Modern-Day Masters of Sex

Meet the Modern-Day Masters of Sex | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Talking with today's top sex researchers about where sex is headed.

Nobody plans on being a sex researcher when they grow up. Nobody plans to work a strain gauge between splayed legs as they measure changes in penis circumference during sexual stimulation. Nobody dreams to sit across from over-caffeinated college students who are looking to make a quick buck, having to prosaically ask, “When’s the last time you’ve had oral sex?” and then wait for the answer to scrawl on a clipboard.

Yet, sex research remains a growing field. The average annual salary of a sexologist or sex researcher can range anywhere from $40,000 to $63,000, according to modest estimates, but with potential for that number to skyrocket if the person in question takes on sex therapy, blogging, and, of course, the celebrity of television “sexpert” appearances. Beginning as a scientific discipline in the classical Greek period, there are currently over 20 schools and institutes that provide higher education for those wishing to start a career doing clinical, survey, observational, or experimental sex research.

TheBodyHouse.biz's curator insight, July 23, 6:13 PM

This is a new show I haven't seen yet. The article is interesting and addresses the many reasons why so many people enter the sex work industry..... Hint- it's not just for money and desperation. Amen.

If you're a frequenter of sex services... be they erotic bodyrubs or full service escorts or anything in between, this article may be enlightening.

The fact is, sex work is real work. Treat your provider as the business person they are. If they are professional and serious about the service they offer then they may just rank up their with your therapist and doctor.

Is this a grandiose notion? Well, if you think of the time, money and effort some clients put into receiving sex services then no, it isn't.

Sex work may even be the "apple a day" that keeps clients healthy enough to stay out of the doctor's office and out of the therapist's chair.

Why do I say this?

Well, it could be because I'm in the sex industry and I know most of my clients let go completely with me. They are looking to "let go" fully with someone on every level, not just sexually.

Most of us hold something back from doctors and therapists, right? But, why hold back with a sex worker? It's as primal as it gets.

It's the oldest profession and like death and taxes we can always count on it being there no matter how far underground it's driven.

So have a look at "Satisfaction" a new show about an old industry. You might have fun watching and learn a little something too. ;)

Beware Popular Lies About Sex

Beware Popular Lies About Sex | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Not “myths,” but lies.

Katie Couric recently embarrassed herself during an interview with psychologist David Ley about pornography. When he calmly described to her what a range of scientific studies say about porn’s effects on behavior and our brain—that it’s minimal—Couric raised her voice, rolled her eyes, and said she was sick of science. “Can’t we use some common sense here?”

Actually, no. Common sense clearly tells us that the Earth is flat. Want some science with that, Ma’am?

In contrast, Couric believed the fact-less, emotional rantings of her other guest—because they fit Couric’s existing beliefs. Like all morning TV hosts, her job is to say bland things, not to think. At least Couric didn’t lie; she’s just uninterested in facts.

Some people do lie. Here are some popular lies about sex that are easy to believe because they make “common sense”—and because some people are making a lot of money and maintaining large support bases promoting these lies.

In a previous post, I mentioned my desire to compile a list of journals and presses that exclusively focus on publishing underrepresented voices, such as women, LGBTQ writers, and writers of color. I’ve finally managed to pull something together that hopefully may prove to be a good starting point and resource for those writers who may wish to find a good home for their writing. Or maybe readers who wish to read more widely or diversely.
