Queensland drags heels on anal sex law changes | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The Palaszczuk Government has taken more than six months to bring a discriminatory Queensland law that has stood on the law books since 1899 to the consultation phase, with any action likely to still be months away.

Creepy & Complex Sexual Discussions Regarding David Bowie

Creepy & Complex Sexual Discussions Regarding David Bowie | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
It wasn’t until David Bowie passed that I heard about how he had slept with an underage girl.

At the age of 15, Lori Mattix was a self-described groupie in the 70s ~ a groupie who lost her virginity to David Bowie. Last November, in an interview at the Thrillist, the adult Mattix seemed fine about it. Even when Thrillist reporter Michael Kaplan pressed her about it, she seemed dreamily happy, gushing, “Who wouldn’t want to lose their virginity to David Bowie?”

Mattix’s stories of her groupie years, deflowering, and age have varied over the years ~ which is not stated here to cast doubt on her claims, but to point out that she clearly hasn’t viewed her sexual activities with Bowie (or others) to be rape or anything remotely close to it. But, as told in the Thrillist piece, Mattix was a minor and Bowie was not. So even with Mattix agreeing and desiring to have sex with Bowie, her age removes her legal ability to consent. This would make Bowie guilty, ethically if not legally, of statutory rape.

Yes, I know; we all took David Bowie’s death pretty hard. But I’m not posting this about Bowie per se…. I mean, sure, there are definitely implications and conversations we should be having regarding celebrities and abuse. And we do have some consumer power we can wield. But the real issues I am looking at in this conversation are the rights of young people to have any sexual autonomy, who decides who is victimized, and how autonomy and victimization impact one another.

The Dangerous Catch-22 of Coming out As a Sex Worker

The Dangerous Catch-22 of Coming out As a Sex Worker | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

People malign sex workers without realizing they're talking to one...

Some sex worker rights activists say that white women like Evie should come out as an act of solidarity. If everyone who’s had sex for money were open about it, would the public accept that sex work defies stereotypes and is more prevalent than most imagine? The answer is a Catch-22. Stigma and severe criminal penalties keep people from openly fighting laws and cultural attitudes.

The treachery trinity of Tragedy-disbelief and murder of the soul, by Local child sexual molestation by the Local Catholic church, has not been dealt with by our justice system.  AS a Former Candidate for Governor of Indiana 2012, and Rape survivor by 2 cock sucking Priest in Indianapolis in 1961 or so at the local southside church with 2 steps. I am not even catholic.  After repeated misdirection by those willing to commit the Cardinal Sin of Covering up childhood sexual assault by clergy is running deep in this local church. I refuse to be denied my opportunity to reach restitution. Your Sin against Children will never be forgiven by any form of clergy until you made amends to our city and to ourselves. You see 2 of us were raped that morning. God Has a Personal Hold on your personal immortality in his afterlife. Make amends Now while you can. I want my story known one way or another. It Is "I".  a serial Childhood rape survivor. I want 2 things. A life-size monument to 2 noble people placed at the new restroom facility in front of the city-county building. In honor of our lost childhood and trip through Hell on Earth. Eli Lilly , Madam C. J. Walker. It Is "I".

Want some insight into the whos and whys of sex workers... then this article is a MUST read.

The fact is... it's almost a certainty that you know a sex worker. The nice college student, the pretty barista, the cute waitress, even your middle aged neighbor... these women (and many more) are very often offering a sexual service for money on the sly.

Having said that... they deserve as much respect as anyone else. We need to stop our judgement toward these women. They're only fulfilling a demand that has existed since the beginning of time.

Woman sues Georgia city for requiring doctor’s prescription to buy a vibrator

Woman sues Georgia city for requiring doctor’s prescription to buy a vibrator | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Did you know that there are places in these here United States–land of the free and home of the brave–where it is actually illegal to purchase or sell vibrators or other sex toys? Like the entire state of Alabama and several municipalities elsewhere? And people still live there? I did, but I continue to be amazed. I understand this even less than I understand “dry counties.” What kind of sheer madness drives people to stand in opposition to orgasms?

One such place is Sandy Springs, Georgia, which prohibits the sale of vibrators without a doctor’s prescription. They are banned, except for “bona fide medical, scientific, educational, legislative, judicial or law enforcement purpose.” For serious. Can you just imagine having to ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a Hitachi Magic Wand? I cannot.

Idaho bill would allow doctors or cops to refuse service to LGBT people on religious grounds | The Raw Story

Idaho bill would allow doctors or cops to refuse service to LGBT people on religious grounds | The Raw Story | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

An Idaho Republican can’t think of anyone in his state who has been forced to render aid to a gay or lesbian person against their will, and he’d like to keep it that way.

Rep. Lynn Luker outlined a proposal Tuesday backed by his conservative Christian allies to shield religious people from the threat of losing their professional licenses for refusing service or employment to anyone they conclude violates their religious beliefs.

Prostitution and Denver's Criminal Justice System: Who Pays?

Prostitution and Denver's Criminal Justice System: Who Pays? is a study that examined the enforcement of current prostitution laws in the City and County of Denver. The study was conducted in partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking (LCHT), for the purpose of obtaining a knowledge base of prostitution-related offenses. The goal of the study was to highlight potential points of intersection between prostitution and sex trafficking, in addition to the role of the criminal justice system in investigating and prosecuting buyers of commercial sex. Ultimately, our study aims to better understand one community's response to prostitution related offenses.

Condoms As Evidence

Condoms As Evidence | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In San Francisco and other cities across the US, possession of condoms, condom wrappers and conversations about safe sex are used as evidence against sex workers to justify arrest for prostitution and prostitution related charges.

The routine use of condoms as a tool to violate our basic human right to protect ourselves from HIV and sexually transmitted infections, as well as prevent unwanted pregnancies, is unjust and counter to sound public health.  The Human Rights Watch released a report chronicling this absurd practice in four cities:  New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

While primarily about the issue of sex work, the assumptions about condoms as moral negatives instead of health imperatives is dangerous to us all.
