Scientists Can Predict Who Will Get An STD

Scientists Can Predict Who Will Get An STD | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

A recent study from the University of Washington suggests that strides to prevent sexually transmitted diseases should start at an early age, before an individual is even sexually active. In short, the best way to educate a young adult is to think about the big picture, not just the sex part.

So, what exactly does that mean? You've really got to pull on your parenting pants, which sounds more like logic than science in our book. "Kids don't engage in risky behaviors in a vacuum. There are environmental opportunities that have to be created," said Marina Epstein, lead author of the study. With STDs being the most common type of infection in the U.S., prevention is key. A previous study concluded that young adults between 15 and 24 make up half of the new cases. Part of the problem is that many of them are not being educated until after they've already had risky sex.

There Is a Daily Pill That Prevents HIV. Gay Men Should Take It. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Today’s AIDS landscape reveals that an unyielding devotion to condom usage isn’t enough to halt the spread of HIV. It takes a variety of safe-sex practices to shield gay men from infection, and Truvada should be a linchpin of that strategy. Given the seemingly unstoppable drop in condom usage among gay men, this is no time for ideological disputes or intergenerational conflict. Every gay man with multiple sex partners should take Truvada, and AIDS activists should do everything they can to get the drug in the hands of those who want it.

Sex as Exercise - New York Times (blog)

Sex as Exercise - New York Times (blog) | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The issue of sex as exercise, however, has remained largely unexplored. “There are these myths,” including that sex burns at least 100 calories per session, said Antony D. Karelis, a professor of exercise science at the University of Quebec at Montreal who undertook a study, published in PLOS One in October, to look at how much energy is actually exerted during sex. “But nobody had tested” those assumptions.

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The women's health movement of the 1960s and 1970s transformed the doctor-patient relationship and yielded the novel concept that women can take control of their own health, says Laurie Edwards in this excerpt from "In the Kingdom of the Sick."...

For women, this change started with the radical notion that they had a right to know about their own bodies, had a right to control their own health care and belonged in medical schools where they could fully participate in the very health care decisions that have such significance in their lives. The grassroots women's health activism that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s was fostered by an equally diverse group of advocates, among them middle-class white women, middle- and working-class African Americans, lesbians and heterosexuals.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Remember that scene in Mad Men, where Betty's doctor calls Don & talks to him about Betty as if she were the child? This is how we got away from that.

"Feminism challenged social practices in the doctor's office and recast relationships between compliant patient and infallible physician as part of the larger process to keep women down."

But we must also look at this history and see how we are moving backwards in America;  this is also a dire warning about where we are headed.

"The landmark court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973 by finding that preventing a woman's right to end her pregnancy violated her due process, was a pivotal piece of legislation in terms of reproductive rights, women's health and women's ability to make decisions regarding their bodies. "

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In May of this year, I talked to Deon Haywood, Executive Director of Women With A Vision in New Orleans about her approach to organizing. WWAV scored a significant grassroots legal and political victory in the last year with the NO Justice campaign, which removed hundreds of cis and trans women from Louisiana’s registered felony sexual offender rolls. Deon is a longtime activist in the city of New Orleans, with a history of organizing low-income women of color around reproductive justice, harm reduction, and human rights.

...We are not all in the same boat. And if we keep playing like we are, we’re not really going to make the kind of change we’d like to see. Because the women I work with are never going to be able to jump into the sex workers’ rights movement. They don’t feel like that movement is for them.

As Obamacare’s Birth Control Benefit Hits Its One-Year Anniversary, It’s Helping 27 Million Women

As Obamacare’s Birth Control Benefit Hits Its One-Year Anniversary, It’s Helping 27 Million Women | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

One year ago, one of Obamacare’s most popular provisions took effect — the rule requiring insurers to cover women’s preventative health services, like birth control and Pap smears, at no additional charge. Through this provision, Obamacare has helped prevent women from continuing to pay disproportionately more for their health care than men do, since women are no longer charged a co-pay for the wide range of preventative services they need.
