The Pretty Project - What Makes Someone Attractive?

The Pretty Project - What Makes Someone Attractive? | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
What is it that makes a person attractive? Or gorgeous? Or beautiful? (Or whatever your favorite adjective is)... A few drinks? No, I'm looking for something more in depth than that. A formula for ...
Shelby French's insight:

It is said that symmetry is beauty. It means the person is healthy enough to have children and provide.  The eyes are just above half of the way down the front of the head and should be 1/5 of the width of the face. Ears should lay flat to the head for the most part and extend from the middle of the eye to the opening of the mouth. Lip edges should line up with the pupil of the eye, no thicker than the closed eyelid. At the base, the nose should be just larger than the eye width and not sit too far above the lips. The bridge of the nose should extend straight and not be too protruding or flat. The chin should be gently rounded and smooth. The face in general should be oval-shaped with smooth skin and clear cheekbones. And the eyebrows should be tame and separate, but not too thin. There are exceptions.   Men in particular go for women with symmetrical faces and “hyper feminine” facial characteristics, such as a small pointed chin… Men also are drawn to things that signal youth such as full lips, clear and smooth skin, clear eyes, lustrous hair, and good muscle tone (which makes sense when viewing a woman for her reproductive potential).     We apparently are also attracted to the look and smell of people who are most like our parents. At the University of St Andrews in Scotland, cognitive psychologist David Perrett studies what makes faces attractive. He has developed a computerized morphing system that can endlessly adjust faces to suit his needs. Students in his experiments are left to decide which face they fancy the most. Perrett has taken images of students’ own faces and morphed them into the opposite sex. Of all the faces on offer, this seems to be the face that subject will always prefer. They can’t recognize it as their own, they just know they like it. Perrett suggests that we find our own faces attractive because they remind us of the faces we looked at constantly in our early childhood years – Mom and Dad.

Crazy in love: What happens in your brain when you really do have chemistry

Crazy in love: What happens in your brain when you really do have chemistry | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
Doctors have mapped the chemical changes that occur and discovered the parts of the brain that shut down during the heady days of courtship.
Shelby French's insight:
The frontal cortex, vital to judgment, shuts down when we fall in love. MRI scans show this de-activation occurs only when someone is shown a photo of the person they adore, causing them to suspend all criticism or doubt. Doctors actually beleive there is a purpose of the brain shutting down, If judgment is suspended, the most unlikely pair can get together and reproduce.Studies have shown brain chemical dopamine is at higher levels in those in love.

Why Should We Have Sex? 20 Good Healthy Reasons

Why Should We Have Sex? 20 Good Healthy Reasons | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
Why Should We Have Sex? 20 Good Healthy Reasons
Shelby French's insight:

During sex your heart rate goes from 70 beats per minute to 150, a good training for the heart. Having sex twice a week decreases the risk of heart attack by 50 %. Also during the sex intercourses, the breath is deeper, meaning a better oxygenation. Sex means softer skin. While having sex, a woman's body doubles the estrogen level, and this makes her hair shine while the skin becomes softer. Sweating while having sex cleans the skin pores, making the skin brighter and decreasing the risk of developing dermatitis. Sex strengthens muscles. Sex is also a pain reliever, ten times more effective than Valium.

Sex: Why it makes women fall in love - but just makes men want MORE!

Sex: Why it makes women fall in love - but just makes men want MORE! | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
During a woman's head during an orgasm up to 30 different parts of the brain are activated, including those responsible for emotion, joy, satisfaction and memory.
Shelby French's insight:

They found that up to 30 different parts of the brain are activated during a women's orgasm including joy, excitement, memory and satisfaction. The scientists also discovered that sexual arousal numbs the female nervous system to such an extent that a woman doesn’t feel as much pain — only pleasure. A key hormone released during sex is oxytocin, also known as the ‘cuddle hormone’. This lowers our defenses and makes us trust people more. It’s also the key to bonding, as it increases levels of empathy. Women produce more of this hormone, although it’s not clear why, and this means they are more likely to let their guard down and fall in love with a man after sex. Men, on the other hand, instead of getting a surge of bonding hormone receive a surge of simple pleasure. Instead of receiving the oxytocin men receive pure dopamine- the pleasure hormone which is addictive. We lose brain cells every day but having regular sex may help us grow new brain cells. The lips are packed with nerve endings — 100 times more than the fingertips. Studies prove that if you kiss before having sex you’ll have better intercourse.  While male brains tend to focus on the physical stimulation involved in sexual contact, the key to female arousal seems to be deep relaxation and a lack of anxiety. The endorphins released during sex can really help treat depression and clear the mind.

What Causes Love & Attraction? The Science of Love and Reasons Behind Attraction

The Science of Love and Attraction. Role of Hormones in Love and attraction.
Shelby French's insight:

There are three stages.

1. Lust. Sexual needs, just thinking about sexual intercourse or along those lines.

2. Attraction. This is where it is said people "fall in love". Their significant other is constantly on their mind. Adrenaline and dopamine is released and play a role in their emotional state.

3. Attachment. Oxytocin and Vasopressin are the two key hormones in the last stage to a "successful relationship"

Attention Getter: Our Brain On Sex

Attention Getter: Our Brain On Sex | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
Sex just got a little nerdy.
Shelby French's insight:

One study showed that it took people less than 1/4 of a second to decide if a person was "disirable". During sex the putitary glands sends out hormones that decrease pain and increase pleasure, adn the hippocampus makes memories based on sight or sounds. in both the male's and female's brain during an orgasm the lateral orbitofrontal cortex shuts down. During an orgasm the brain looks like that of a brain on heroin; it is 95% the same.

Study: Oxytocin ('the Love Hormone') Makes Men in Relationships Want to Stay Away From Other Women

Study: Oxytocin ('the Love Hormone') Makes Men in Relationships Want to Stay Away From Other Women | Sex (Mentally and Hormonally) | Scoop.it
And it apparently comes in a nasal spray.
Shelby French's insight:

The hormone Oxytocin promotes bonding, sometimes to the extent of making us conformists. Oxytocin promotes monogamy by preventing men from "signaling romantic interest" to other women. The hormone promoted bonding with their significant other, not an attractive stranger.  There are plenty of ways in which oxytocin release can be stimulated during a monogamous relationship. Sex, yes, but also hand-holding and touch are known to trigger the hormone
