Madam Dora DuFran - Prostitution and Marriage on the West Frontier

Madam Dora DuFran - Prostitution and Marriage on the West Frontier | Sex History | Scoop.it

Madam Dora DuFran was one of the most prominent and successful madams in the Old West. Her story is legendary among historians that study the way madams, brothels, and prostitution worked. Madam DuFran was a true entrepreneur and feminist. She knew that to survive the time, she needed to be the best and have the best girls underneath her. She is a true success story of the time as she started off as a prostitute and ended up carrying her own business.

The Truth About Masturbation (1916)

The Truth About Masturbation (1916) | Sex History | Scoop.it

Masturbation is often thought to be more harmful to boys than to girls, because of the direct drain upon the resources of the body in the case of the male through the loss of the seminal fluid. But when one considers the havoc wrought upon the more delicate nervous systems of young women it is not always so certain that they suffer less seriously from the practice than do young men.

Guest speaker compares U.S. and European sexuality

Guest speaker compares U.S. and European sexuality | Sex History | Scoop.it

Clark’s lecture focused on “Sex: Why is Europe Different?” She discussed the popular idea that Europeans are more open with their sexuality than Americans.

“Europeans tend to regard sex in a matter of fact way,” Clark said.

Many European couples live together, have children and only marry years later or “out of order” compared to Americans. The teenage birthrate is 15 to 19 percent compared to the United States’ 40.2 percent. Abortion rates are also lower in Europe than in America, Clark said.

Sex education must be taught in European schools and parents cannot pull their students out of the class. Schools provide condoms and birth control for students.

...Clark credited the welfare state and sexual liberation movements of Europe for the openness.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Europe saw a backlash against the church and its strict rules regarding homosexuality and pre-marital sex. After World War II, consumer societies replaced the church’s role. Women and teenagers began working, giving them a new-found independence and the birth control pill was introduced in 1961. The church could no longer respond to the changing society and church attendance fell.

Better welfare was also introduced. The government gave allowances to families, childcare for single women and universal healthcare.

“I always wondered why Europe was more liberal with sex, but the welfare state explains that,” said senior history major Kyle Mathers.

The Joy of Sexus: Lust, Love, and Longing in the Ancient World

The Joy of Sexus: Lust, Love, and Longing in the Ancient World

~ Vicki León (author) More about this product
List Price: $17.00
Price: $11.80
You Save: $5.20 (31%)

Now, in this book of astonishing true tales of love and sex in long-ago Greece, Rome, and other cultures around the Mediterranean, she opens the doors to shadowy rooms and parts the curtains of decorum.

León goes far beyond what we think we know about sex in ancient times, taking readers on a randy tour of aphrodisiacs and anti-aphrodisiacs, contraception, nymphomania, bisexuality, cross-dressing, and gender-bending. She explains citizens' fear of hermaphrodites, investigates the stinging price paid for adultery despite the ease of divorce, introduces readers to a surprising array of saucy pornographers, and even describes the eco-friendly dildos used by libidinous ancients. Love also gets its due, with true tales of the lifelong bonds between military men, history's first cougar and her devoted relationship with Julius Caesar, and the deification of lovers.

Womanist Musings: Andrea Dworkin On Transgender

Womanist Musings: Andrea Dworkin On Transgender | Sex History | Scoop.it

There has been a lot of heated discussion among Second-Wave radical feminists, concerning when transphobic theory "took over" the discourse. Women who claim to be of the hard-core Andrea Dworkinschool of radical feminism, steadfastly adhere to the concept that trans people are not the gender they say they are and will not use preferred pronouns; some go so far as to edit comments on their blogs and change the pronouns, for example. Many of these Second-Wavers believe it is reactionary to "endorse" (for lack of a better word) the gender identities of trans folks. Much talk about the "gender binary" (male/female, historically constructed as mirror images, opposites, yin and yang) and how transgenderism "upholds" this binary, etc etc etc.

For many of these feminists, the late Andrea Dworkin is something of a patron saint. One well-known radfem uses a quote from Dworkin on her blog, to let it be known she is a "take no prisoners" sorta gal. I have read many, many quotes by Dworkin on Second-Wave radical feminist blogs.

But it is telling that they carefully leave out the quote(s) below, even though they claim to have all of her books.

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum | Sex History | Scoop.it

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum, at 1133 Wuding Road, Shanghai, is the only private museum of the kind in China. It has been a point of controversy ever since its establishment in September 1999. Some people are opposed to its exhibits, considering them distasteful and unhealthy, while others believe that they form part of ancient Chinese civilization, and reflect objectively humankind¡¯s attitude towards sex. For a time the museum seemed likely to close down, but as people are now more aware of the cultural value of ancient sexual practices, the museum has fortunately met with development opportunities, and a branch has opened in Zhejiang¡¯s Hangzhou.

Eve and the Identity of Women: 6. The Old Testament, Women, & Evil

Eve and the Identity of Women: 6. The Old Testament, Women, & Evil | Sex History | Scoop.it

It is important to understand that the story told in Genesis about Eve and the serpent has a larger religious and political context which is the real historical struggle waged by the prophets of Yahweh and the indigenous Canaanite cult of Baal. Baal, who appears to have arrived in Canaan with the Phoenicians, was the son and consort of the Mother Goddess Asherah.

Baal was primarily a fertility god and appears not only in the form of a man and a bull (like his father 'El), but also in the form of a serpent. By stressing through these forms his potency and virility, Baal represents the masculine element, and serves as the fertilizing, life-giving, and life-renewing aspect through whom the Mother Goddess fulfills her functions.

Norman Haire and the Study of Sex

Norman Haire and the Study of Sex | Sex History | Scoop.it

Both Margaret Sanger, the best-known American birth-control advocate, and Norman Haire, her Australian contemporary, grew up in families where there were 11 children. Both were driven by their mothers' misery to campaign for family limitation. Haire caused outrage in Sydney in 1944 by describing his mother at 40 as a ''devitalised, irritable, cantankerous, prematurely old woman … For all that she got out of life she might as well have been a prize cow.''

...Haire has been criticised by the movement for homosexual law reform for his unwillingness to ''come out''. He has generally been forgotten as a birth-control pioneer because he was a man in what was seen as women's business. Claimed neither as Australian, English nor Jewish, Haire appears in a proper perspective in this book, which shows him at last as a worthy subject for his own drama on film perhaps, like Alfred Kinsey, or on television.
