Defining the Historian: Women Who Write About Sex

Defining the Historian: Women Who Write About Sex | Sex History | Scoop.it

So to try and answer this question for myself I turned first to my books, and then to the brilliant community of historians I know on twitter. And we made a list. A list of women who have written about sex, throughout history, so that I can prove women have been doing this for just as long as men. Sexual knowledge is not the authority of just one gender, although history often likes to tell us differently.

The year was 1970 B.E.L.J. (Before E.L. James) and I was a freshman in high school. Midnight Cowboy (1969) had just become the only X-rated movie ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture, foreshadowing a decade of sexually bold expression.

Review: Don we now our Gay Apparel, by Shaun Cole

Review: Don we now our Gay Apparel, by Shaun Cole | Sex History | Scoop.it

If there’s a predominant theme in Cole’s book on the history of gay fashion in the twentieth century, it’s that gay fashion is always imperfectly mimetic, a tangled mix of “passing, minstrelization and capitulation”, to quote sociologist Martin P. Levine (pg. 3)

Even before the trial of Oscar Wilde, there was the trial and acquittal of Ernest Boulton (aka “Fanny”) and Frederick Payne (aka “Stella”) in 1871, two homosexual men who were also crossdressers and sex workers (Pg. 15-16). Ever since, those three categories have been conflated in the public mind (sometimes with justification). Gay men have overlapped with and been in fashion dialectic with other marginal groups (sex workers, soldiers, sailors, aristocrats, police, punks, bikers, artists, etc) for a variety of reasons: camouflage, recognition both covert and overt, political statements, defensive intimidation, generational differentiation, heightening male beauty, conspicuous consumption, personal fetishes or parody.

The Joy of Sexus: Lust, Love, and Longing in the Ancient World

The Joy of Sexus: Lust, Love, and Longing in the Ancient World

~ Vicki León (author) More about this product
List Price: $17.00
Price: $11.80
You Save: $5.20 (31%)

Now, in this book of astonishing true tales of love and sex in long-ago Greece, Rome, and other cultures around the Mediterranean, she opens the doors to shadowy rooms and parts the curtains of decorum.

León goes far beyond what we think we know about sex in ancient times, taking readers on a randy tour of aphrodisiacs and anti-aphrodisiacs, contraception, nymphomania, bisexuality, cross-dressing, and gender-bending. She explains citizens' fear of hermaphrodites, investigates the stinging price paid for adultery despite the ease of divorce, introduces readers to a surprising array of saucy pornographers, and even describes the eco-friendly dildos used by libidinous ancients. Love also gets its due, with true tales of the lifelong bonds between military men, history's first cougar and her devoted relationship with Julius Caesar, and the deification of lovers.

Norman Haire and the Study of Sex

Norman Haire and the Study of Sex | Sex History | Scoop.it

Both Margaret Sanger, the best-known American birth-control advocate, and Norman Haire, her Australian contemporary, grew up in families where there were 11 children. Both were driven by their mothers' misery to campaign for family limitation. Haire caused outrage in Sydney in 1944 by describing his mother at 40 as a ''devitalised, irritable, cantankerous, prematurely old woman … For all that she got out of life she might as well have been a prize cow.''

...Haire has been criticised by the movement for homosexual law reform for his unwillingness to ''come out''. He has generally been forgotten as a birth-control pioneer because he was a man in what was seen as women's business. Claimed neither as Australian, English nor Jewish, Haire appears in a proper perspective in this book, which shows him at last as a worthy subject for his own drama on film perhaps, like Alfred Kinsey, or on television.

In defense of heroin users and sex workers: an interview with author of You Will Die | Sex History | Scoop.it

You Will Die exposes the fallacies and the history behind our taboos on excrement, sex, drugs, and death. Arthur uses racy readability and rigorous documentation to raze sacred shrines of political correctness on the left and of conventional wisdom on the right. From the proper way to defecate to how to reach nirvana, anticipate the unexpected. It is not simply a novel exploration of sex and drugs, but also of individuality, liberty, and the meaning of life. You Will Die gives readers a new way of seeing their world and allows them to make a more informed choice about living an authentic life.

Linda's Strange Vacation

Linda's Strange Vacation | Sex History | Scoop.it

One of the few '50s-era, Paris books, not by Olympia that's worth republishing. Originally released by the Montmarte-based "Oceanic Press," Huttning's Linda, for whatever it lacks in, umm, editing, more than makes up for it with style, thoroughness and imagination.

The Linda of the story is a young girl on holiday at her Uncle Arthur's. Before she meets up with him, there's an encounter with a maid, a young virile cousin, then memorable scene(s) in her uncle's (a quiet-mannered author of guess what) study, comparisons with her sister, punishment, big parties, and so on.

Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade

Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade

Product by Farrar, Straus and Giroux ~ Justin Spring (author) More about this product
List Price: $18.00
Price: $13.23
You Save: $4.77 (26%)

"Drawn from the secret, never-before-seen diaries, journals, and sexual records of the novelist, poet, and university professor Samuel M. Steward, Secret Historian is a sensational reconstruction of one of the more extraordinary hidden lives of the twentieth century. An intimate friend of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder, Steward maintained a secret sex life from childhood on, and documented these experiences in brilliantly vivid (and often very funny) detail.

After leaving the world of academe to become Phil Sparrow, a tattoo artist on Chicago’s notorious South State Street, Steward worked closely with Alfred Kinsey on his landmark sex research. During the early 1960s, Steward changed his name and identity once again, this time to write exceptionally literate, upbeat pro-homosexual pornography under the name of Phil Andros.

Until today he has been known only as Phil Sparrow—but an extraordinary archive of his papers, lost since his death in 1993, has provided Justin Spring with the material for an exceptionally compassionate and brilliantly illuminating life-and-times biography. More than merely the story of one remarkable man, Secret Historian is a moving portrait of homosexual life long before Stonewall and gay liberation."

Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars

Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars | Sex History | Scoop.it

Newly discharged from the Marines after World War II, Scotty Bowers arrived in Hollywood in 1946. Young, charismatic, and strikingly handsome, he quickly caught the eye of many of the town’s stars and starlets. He began sleeping with some himself, and connecting others with his coterie of young, attractive, and sexually free-spirited friends. His own lovers included Edith Piaf, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Cary Grant, and the abdicated King of England Edward VIII, and he arranged tricks or otherwise crossed paths with Tennessee Williams, Charles Laughton, Vincent Price, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, Gloria Swanson, Noël Coward, Mae West, James Dean, Rock Hudson and J. Edgar Hoover, to name but a few.

Full Service is not only a fascinating chronicle of Hollywood’s sexual underground, but also exposes the hypocrisy of the major studios, who used actors to propagate a myth of a conformist, sexually innocent America knowing full well that their stars’ personal lives differed dramatically from this family-friendly mold. As revelation-filled as Hollywood Babylon, Full Service provides a lost chapter in the history of the sexual revolution and is a testament to a man who provided sex, support, and affection to countless people.

Mrs Robinson's Disgrace by Kate Summerscale

Mrs Robinson's Disgrace by Kate Summerscale | Sex History | Scoop.it

"Female sexual mania took two forms. Erotomaniacs......were 'restless, thoughtful, greatly depressed in mind, agitated, irritable and passionate'. Nymphomaniacs were less prone to mood swings and obsessions, and more given to indiscriminate sexual hunger. It suited Isabella’s counsel to be vague about which of the two conditions afflicted her."

----

Curator comment: this is an absorbing account by Kate Summerscale, in her new book "Mrs. Robinson's Disgrace", about an 1858 divorce trial that invoked a novel defense against charges of a woman's repeated infidelity.
