Owning Porno Used to Mean Something, Damnit

Owning Porno Used to Mean Something, Damnit | Sex History | Scoop.it

When I was in high school I kept my porn in a white box. Inside the box was a stack of magazines—almost entirely Playboys, because I liked the clean stuff—as well as a purple folder full of the images I liked best, so that I could spread them out on my bedroom floor and sit in the middle of them,

In EROS Magazine, July 1980 – Silent Porn Star | Sex History | Scoop.it

EROS magazine shows it’s genes, hearkening towards 1970s Penthouse style, and adequately fits the “men’s lifestyle porn” of that period. The articles are few and short, easy to read — while the photos are edgy and much more titillating than a Playboy ‘centerfold’ style of photo galleries.

Gracie Passette's insight:

Lots of images!

Gloria Leonard, Publisher, Pornography Star and Advocate, Dies at 73

Gloria Leonard, Publisher, Pornography Star and Advocate, Dies at 73 | Sex History | Scoop.it

Ms. Leonard was a pornographic film star, and, later, a publisher of High Society magazine and a spokeswoman for the industry.

Gloria Leonard, who became a pornographic film star in her 30s and then a men’s magazine publisher and a prominent spokeswoman for her industry, died on Monday in Waimea, Hawaii. She was 73.

The cause was a stroke, her daughter, Robin Leonardi, said.

Ms. Leonard took a decidedly atypical path into pornographic movies in the 1970s, a time many in the industry now regard as its golden age, when films had story lines and actors enjoyed some crossover appeal with mainstream audiences. She was a divorced single mother, much older than most starlets and had held other jobs, including as a Wall Street broker and publicist.

The Rest Was Just Imagination - An interview with Lydia Millet

BLVR: Your book Everyone’s Pretty is reportedly based on your time working with LFP. Could you talk about this influence in specific terms? The book doesn’t seem concerned with reporting on or analyzing the pornography industry.

LM: No, that was other people’s bailiwick. To me, mass-produced pornography is excruciatingly boring and the industry only a little less so. I was mostly interested in the styles of neurosis I met there.

Alan Duncan of the nudist magazine Nude Living looks at what brings women to undress in front of the eyes of the public: is it exhibitionism, does it make them a whore, is it a sign of frigidity...or are they simply sexually healthy women?

Obviously, every nude model from the seventies to eighties wasn’t a hairy dude with a thick beard, mustache or… um, mustache? Seriously, after last week’s Flashback Friday post on Butch Gaylord, we originally intended to go the twinkier route with today’s update…

And then we saw Ron Raz‘s cock. Upon first impression, we had difficulty believing it could have ever existed.

A Bunny Thing Happened: An Oral History of the Playboy Clubs

A Bunny Thing Happened: An Oral History of the Playboy Clubs | Sex History | Scoop.it

When Hugh Hefner opened the first Playboy Club, in 1960, he was selling men the chance to walk into the pages of his magazine: the swinging-bachelor-pad décor, the carefully garnished cocktails, and, above all, the cantilevered, cottontailed Bunnies. For the women wearing ears, the payoff was entirely different. As a 21st-century Playboy Club opens in London, Bruce Handy hears from Hef, his execs, and a hutchful of former Bunnies about the rise and fall (and rise?) of the nightlife empire that spawned an all-American sex symbol.

Sexy 1951 sci-fi pulp mag!

Sexy 1951 sci-fi pulp mag! | Sex History | Scoop.it

I selected THRILLING WONDER STORIES June 1951 for two reasons: I loved the cover of the elegant gloved glamour girl posed as a kind of “muse” for rocket ships, and I also wanted a magazine that is almost exactly as old as I am. Given how publication schedules work, this issue was conceived probably right around the time I was. I was born in October 1951, and this magazine, dated June of the same year, was probably assembled in February or March.

Les beautés de Paris et de Hollywood

Les beautés de Paris et de Hollywood | Sex History | Scoop.it

Known successively by the names of "Paris-Hollywood" and "Les beautés de Paris et de Hollywood", the magazine achieved its final fame as "Les folies de Paris et de Hollywood". Little by little, and with the unexpected help from the Hays law on censorship, the magazine called in professional photographers from the French cinema who could provide images with more pizzaz. The film sets and the Parisian cabarets became their privileged shooting ground. We propose to you today the publications from 1953 to 1970, issue # 2 to # 538 plus 23 exceptional issues. More than 400 different issues.

Cover and scans from Bare magazine of June 1955

Cover and scans from Bare magazine of June 1955 | Sex History | Scoop.it

Bare promised readers the naked truth but didn’t go quite that far. It was a digest-sized men’s magazine, meaning that it was small enough to fit into a pocket and be carried about unseen. At least, that seemed to be the point. As a bonus, such publications were cheaper to print that standard sized magazines. Bare lasted just a few years, from 1953 to 1955, if the span of issues available online are an indication. You’ll notice its slogan was “The Naked Truth.” There was no nudity, but it did try to titillate. T
