Sexual compulsivity among heterosexual college students

Sexual compulsivity among heterosexual college students | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"Although we found support for construct validity of the Sexual Compulsivity Scale in our sample (of 876 heterosexual college students), it is not clear whether the scale distinctly measures sexual compulsivity or taps into other constructs, such as sexual desire and sexual exploration."

------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment:  It can seem so very basic to an understanding of the nature of compulsivity, but many professionals in the field struggle to account for variable levels of desire when considering reasons for problematic sexual excesses. To say that some people aren't classically "addicted" or "compulsive" but instead have high levels of sexual desire that can get them in trouble doesn't dismiss the severity of their problem.  This explains some of the negative reaction generated by journal titles such as "Sexual desire, not hypersexuality, is related to neurophysiological response elicited by sexual images

Welcome to The Largest Online Source For Curated Information on Chronically Problematic Sexual Behavior

This curated website is dedicated to improving professional and public understanding about why  some people  repeatedly engage in sexual behavior that compromises their safety and personal values despite the knowledge of inevitably problematic consequences and a sincere but repeatedly unsuccessful desire to stop.

Common phrases for this complex behavioral phenomenon include "sex addiction", "compulsive sexual behavior" and "hypersexuality". This site often uses the generic phrase "chronically problematic sexual behavior" (used as a description rather than a diagnosis) since it:

  • is broad enough to transcend theoretical limitations without being so vague that it loses all meaning,

  • is capable of describing clusters of symptoms and complaints rather than a singular clinical entity,

  • accommodates conditions that stem from varying individual, relational and societal sources,

  • is therefore a useful inter-disciplinary term to describe "patterns of sexual behavior that are out of control and have problematic consequences" (Bancroft and Vukadinovic, 2004*).

Information about this topic will be curated from every conceivable source and perspective, in order not to privilege one viewpoint over another to the detriment of an informed and expanded knowledge base that supports a continually evolving understanding of this subject.  Topics range from rigorous research to irreverent humor, representing the entire spectrum of attitudes, opinions and understanding about this topic.  Some items will have lasting significance while others are likely to merit only brief notice.

However, this curation does not focus on mere breadth and quantity of sources with a complete disregard for content.  Conscious effort is made to avoid excessive repetiton of content and to separate the wheat from the chaff, with judicious commentary accompanying almost every item or category.  An editorial or descriptive overview provides an orientation for almost every category or "tag" (see below).

This site is not designed to promote any specific service or treatment providers; hence there are no direct links to sites that do not contain some relevant information that enhances the knowledge base of the topic.

Due to the volume of information on this site, it's best to  use the "Filter" feature near the top of the screen to find content related to a particular category or topic.

Feedback, commentary and suggestions are welcome since they will help build a stronger site.   Please consider "following" this site by clicking the button near the top right of the page  This is a great way to stay current on this topic and to help enhance the visibility of this site to others would may benefit from it.

Chronic Sexual Deception and Sex Addiction

"Chronic sexual infidelity....... can be a result of many factors, yet no matter the cause, any repetitive pattern of inappropriate sexual behavior needs to be addressed in a forthright and informed manner in order to bring healing and happiness to all involved. This article explores this topic in depth, including an examination of how it intersects with the concept of sex addiction."

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: This is from my primary website.  I don't typically post my own articles but I have changed my primary website domain and need to be able to update the link from this curated page, so I have taken down the links from my former domain in place of this one.  Beyond that I think this article has substantial merit as a way to continue to explore the paradigmatic boundaries of this construct.

Pornography and the Male Sexual Script: An Analysis of Consumption and Sexual Relations

Pornography and the Male Sexual Script: An Analysis of Consumption and Sexual Relations | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it
we surveyed 487 college men (ages 18-29 years) in the United States to compare their rate of pornography use with sexual preferences and concerns. Results showed the more pornography a man watches, the more likely he was to use it during sex, request particular pornographic sex acts of his partner, deliberately conjure images of pornography during sex to maintain arousal, and have concerns over his own sexual performance and body image. Further, higher pornography use was negatively associated with enjoying sexually intimate behaviors with a partner

The objective of this study was to measure the relationships between online sexual compulsivity, three dimensions of dissociation.....and past child abuse among men who have sex with men (MSM). A total of 517 MSM, recruited from Internet chat rooms, completed the survey. Results indicated that past child abuse was significantly related to dissociation but not online sexual compulsivity. It was also found that the amount of time MSM spent online in a one-week period, in general and specifically engaged in sexual activity, was significantly related to online sexual compulsivity and three dimensions of disssociation....."

Enhanced Attentional Bias Towards Sexually Explicit Cues in Individuals With and Without Compulsive Sexual Behaviours

Enhanced Attentional Bias Towards Sexually Explicit Cues in Individuals With and Without Compulsive Sexual Behaviours | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"(C)ompared to healthy volunteers, CSB (compulsive sexual behavor) subjects have enhanced attentional bias to explicit cues but not neutral cues particularly for early stimuli latency. Our findings suggest enhanced attentional bias to explicit cues possibly related to an early orienting attentional response. This finding dovetails with our recent observation that sexually explicit videos were associated with greater activity in a neural network similar to that observed in drug-cue-reactivity studies. Greater desire or wanting rather than liking was further associated with activity in this neural network. These studies together provide support for an incentive motivation theory of addiction underlying the aberrant response towards sexual cues in CSB."

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: Somehow I missed curating this important study that lends credence to the theory that pornography triggers brain activity in people with compulsive sexual behavior similar to that triggered by drugs in the brains of drug addicts.  That's a very important finding, and one that is useful to cite in response to people who use last year's "Prause" study (which can be found on this cite by searching for that term) to argue against the existence of an addictive process related to sexual behavior.

Is Sex Addiction Really a Disorder?

Is Sex Addiction Really a Disorder? | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"(M)ore research is needed to understand whether hypersexuality constitutes a problem in living, internal conflict around sexual values, a culturally-bound construct, a personality trait, or if this phenomenon meets the more stringent standard required for a psychiatric disorder."

--------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment:  Some opponents of the concept of sex addiction cackle when they read this, seeing it as a "nail in the coffin" of the construct (I have heard these words).  They seem to breeze over language in the article that is less definitive, such as:  "Collectively, the scientific evidence for hypersexual behavior to be classified as a psychiatric disorder is incomplete at the present time. ... Whether or not the HD proposal will end up in subsequent updates to the DSM has yet to be determined."

Cybersex addiction: Experienced sexual arousal when watching pornography and not real-life sexual contacts makes the difference

Cybersex addiction: Experienced sexual arousal when watching pornography and not real-life sexual contacts makes the difference | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"In a cue-reactivity paradigm 100 pornographic cues were presented to participants and indicators of sexual arousal and craving were assessed. The first study aimed at identifying predictors of cybersex addiction in a freely recruiting sample of 171 heterosexual males. The aim of the second study was to verify the findings of the first study by comparing healthy (n=25) and problematic (n=25) cybersex users.......The results show that indicators of sexual arousal and craving to Internet pornographic cues predicted tendencies towards cybersex in the first study. Moreover, it was shown that problematic cybersex users report greater sexual arousal and craving reactions resulting from pornographic cue presentation......The results support the gratification hypothesis, which assumes reinforcement, learning mechanisms, and craving to be relevant processes in the development and maintenance of cybersex addiction.....".

------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: Another interesting finding is that poor or unsatisfying sexual real-life contacts did not sufficiently explain cybersex addiction.
