Welcome to One of The Largest Online Sources For Curated Information on Chronically Problematic Sexual Behavior

This curated website is dedicated to improving professional and public understanding about why  some people  repeatedly engage in sexual behavior that compromises their safety and personal values despite the knowledge of inevitably problematic consequences and a sincere but repeatedly unsuccessful desire to stop.

Common phrases for this complex behavioral phenomenon include "sex addiction", "compulsive sexual behavior" and "hypersexuality". This site often uses the generic phrase "chronically problematic sexual behavior" (used as a description rather than a diagnosis) since it:

  • is broad enough to transcend theoretical limitations without being so vague that it loses all meaning,

  • is capable of describing clusters of symptoms and complaints rather than a singular clinical entity,

  • accommodates conditions that stem from varying individual, relational and societal sources,

  • is therefore a useful inter-disciplinary term to describe "patterns of sexual behavior that are out of control and have problematic consequences" (Bancroft and Vukadinovic, 2004*).

Information about this topic will be curated from every conceivable source and perspective, in order not to privilege one viewpoint over another to the detriment of an informed and expanded knowledge base that supports a continually evolving understanding of this subject.  Topics range from rigorous research to irreverent humor, representing the entire spectrum of attitudes, opinions and understanding about this topic.  Some items will have lasting significance while others are likely to merit only brief notice.

However, this curation does not focus on mere breadth and quantity of sources with a complete disregard for content.  Conscious effort is made to avoid excessive repetiton of content and to separate the wheat from the chaff, with judicious commentary accompanying almost every item or category.  An editorial or descriptive overview provides an orientation for almost every category or "tag" (see below).

This site is not designed to promote any specific service or treatment providers; hence there are no direct links to sites that do not contain some relevant information that enhances the knowledge base of the topic.

Due to the volume of information on this site, it's best to  use the "Filter" feature near the top of the screen to find content related to a particular category or topic.

Disclaimer: This site attempts to avoid any copyright infringement by linking directly to all sources instead of reproducing, preparing derivative works, distributing, or displaying them publicly.  This site will also not link to any material that appears to be available online as a result of copyright violation.

Feedback, commentary and suggestions are welcome since they will help build a stronger site.   Please consider "following" this site by clicking the button near the top right of the page  This is a great way to stay current on this topic and to help enhance the visibility of this site to others would may benefit from it.

The Relationship Between Hypersexual Behavior, Sexual Excitation, Sexual Inhibition, and Personality Traits

The Relationship Between Hypersexual Behavior, Sexual Excitation, Sexual Inhibition, and Personality Traits | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"The main aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of different personality traits on the degree of hypersexual behavior as measured by the Hypersexual Behavior Inventory (HBI). A further aim was to evaluate the association between sexual inhibition and excitation [as described in the Dual Control Model] and hypersexual behavior. ......... The results provided strong support for the components of the Dual Control Model — sexual excitation and inhibition — to explain hypersexual behavior, irrespective of gender and sexual orientation. Some of the general personality traits also showed significant relationships with hypersexual behavior."

------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: Anyone looking to become well-versed in basic theory about the overall concept of hypersexual would benefit from learning about Bancroft's dual control model, which can be found by typing "dual control" into the funnel-shaped "Search in Topic" icon near the top right of this page.

Sex addiction and gambling disorder: similarities and differences

Sex addiction and gambling disorder: similarities and differences | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"The sample included 59 patients diagnosed with sex addiction, who were compared to 2190 individuals diagnosed with gambling disorder and to 93 healthy controls......While sex addiction and gambling disorder share some psychopathological and personality traits that are not present in healthy controls, there are also some diagnostic-specific characteristics that differentiate between the two clinical groups."

----------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: It is often difficult to ascertain exactly what a study has determined by simply reading the abstract.  This article is no exception.  How is sex addiction "diagnosed" in this case?  Is it simply the SCL-90?  The results show some seemingly interesting findings about personality characteristics, but again without the full article it's impossible to kow how the authors conceptualize these differences.

Enhanced Attentional Bias Towards Sexually Explicit Cues in Individuals With and Without Compulsive Sexual Behaviours

Enhanced Attentional Bias Towards Sexually Explicit Cues in Individuals With and Without Compulsive Sexual Behaviours | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"(C)ompared to healthy volunteers, CSB (compulsive sexual behavor) subjects have enhanced attentional bias to explicit cues but not neutral cues particularly for early stimuli latency. Our findings suggest enhanced attentional bias to explicit cues possibly related to an early orienting attentional response. This finding dovetails with our recent observation that sexually explicit videos were associated with greater activity in a neural network similar to that observed in drug-cue-reactivity studies. Greater desire or wanting rather than liking was further associated with activity in this neural network. These studies together provide support for an incentive motivation theory of addiction underlying the aberrant response towards sexual cues in CSB."

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: Somehow I missed curating this important study that lends credence to the theory that pornography triggers brain activity in people with compulsive sexual behavior similar to that triggered by drugs in the brains of drug addicts.  That's a very important finding, and one that is useful to cite in response to people who use last year's "Prause" study (which can be found on this cite by searching for that term) to argue against the existence of an addictive process related to sexual behavior.

Is Sex Addiction Really a Disorder?

Is Sex Addiction Really a Disorder? | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"(M)ore research is needed to understand whether hypersexuality constitutes a problem in living, internal conflict around sexual values, a culturally-bound construct, a personality trait, or if this phenomenon meets the more stringent standard required for a psychiatric disorder."

--------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment:  Some opponents of the concept of sex addiction cackle when they read this, seeing it as a "nail in the coffin" of the construct (I have heard these words).  They seem to breeze over language in the article that is less definitive, such as:  "Collectively, the scientific evidence for hypersexual behavior to be classified as a psychiatric disorder is incomplete at the present time. ... Whether or not the HD proposal will end up in subsequent updates to the DSM has yet to be determined."

IT HAPPENED TO ME: I Relapsed From My Sex Addiction and it Made Me Get the Help I Needed

IT HAPPENED TO ME: I Relapsed From My Sex Addiction and it Made Me Get the Help I Needed | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"Unlike an alcohol or drug addiction, having sex is a normal human need. Just because I have a problem using sex as a crutch for dealing with emotions doesn’t mean I can’t have it at all. A person with any addiction needs to learn the difference between feeding their body and feeding their hunger."

----------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: An earlier essay by this same author is curated on this site.  People willing to share their vulnerabilities to help others deserve support, and one benefit of a site like xojane is that the comments are uniformly supportive rather than disparaging as is the case with more mainstream sites.

I can’t stop cheating on my husband

I can’t stop cheating on my husband | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"I’m not a sex addict, I’m not looking for love...... For me, it’s a form of self-medicating a traumatic childhood. Yet it does not work, as it only leaves me feeling angry, empty, and filled with more self-loathing."

-------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: There is an odd, dispassionate tone to this essay, in which the author admits that she "can't" stop her behavior on the one hand, but comes up with a variety of justifications for her behavior and barriers to admitting her problem and seeking help.  There is also a disconcerting absence of emotion in the essay.

Brain activity in sex addiction mirrors that of drug addiction

Brain activity in sex addiction mirrors that of drug addiction | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it

"Pornography triggers brain activity in people with compulsive sexual behaviour – known commonly as sex addiction – similar to that triggered by drugs in the brains of drug addicts, according to a University of Cambridge study published in the journal PLOS ONE. However, the researchers caution that this does not necessarily mean that pornography itself is addictive."

------

Bill Herring LCSW, CSAT's insight:

Curator comment: This is an interesting study, while it's important to note that neither its intent nor findings provide evidence of sex/porn addiction nor do they suggest that such behaviors are themselves addictive.

"This study examined the correspondence between the Sexual Compulsivity Scale (SCS( and the Hypersexual Disorder Screening Instrument (HDSI)......"(A)lthough two of the SCS items had low reliability, the SCS as a whole was reliable across much of the sexual compulsivity continuum. Scores on the SCS and the HDSI were highly correlated......."

"Comparisons of SCS scores with HDSI results indicated that the SCS itself could not serve as a substitute for the HDSI and would incorrectly classify a substantial number of individuals' levels of hypersexuality. However, the SCS could be a useful screening tool to provide a preliminary screening of people at risk for meeting criteria on the HDSI."

Pornography and the Male Sexual Script: An Analysis of Consumption and Sexual Relations

Pornography and the Male Sexual Script: An Analysis of Consumption and Sexual Relations | Sex Addiction | Scoop.it
we surveyed 487 college men (ages 18-29 years) in the United States to compare their rate of pornography use with sexual preferences and concerns. Results showed the more pornography a man watches, the more likely he was to use it during sex, request particular pornographic sex acts of his partner, deliberately conjure images of pornography during sex to maintain arousal, and have concerns over his own sexual performance and body image. Further, higher pornography use was negatively associated with enjoying sexually intimate behaviors with a partner
