Welcome to The Largest Online Source For Curated Information On Problematic Sexual Behavior
This is an extraordinarily vibrant time in the fields of sexual health, mental health and public health for discussion about the many complex patterns of chronically uncontrollable, unethical and/or irresponsible sexual behavior that bring terrible consequences to people of all walks of life. The goal of this site is to provide a comprehensive and dynamic site for curated information about this complex behavioral phenomenon.
There is a lot of information, controversy and misunderstanding about this topic, but what is no longer subject to credible debate is that people can engage in patterns of sexual behavior in ways that are capable of bringing immense devastation to themselves and those around them. Phrases such as "sex addiction", "compulsive sexual behavior" and "hypersexuality" each have their advocates and detractors. The curator of this site often uses the generic phrase "problematic sexual behavior" (used as a description rather than a diagnosis) since it:
- is broad enough to transcend theoretical limitations without being so vague that it loses all meaning,
- is capable of describing clusters of symptoms and complaints rather than a singular clinical entity,
- accommodates conditions that stem from varying individual, relational and societal sources, and
- is therefore a useful inter-disciplinary term to describe the complex psychological, behavioral and relational markers of "patterns of sexual behavior that are out of control and have problematic consequences" (Bancroft and Vukadinovic, 2004*).
Information about this topic will be curated from every conceivable source and perspective, in order not to privilege one viewpoint over another to the detriment of an informed and expanded knowledge base with which to develop a continually evolving understanding of this extremely important subject. Topics range from rigorous research to irreverent humor, representing the entire spectrum of attitudes, opinions and understanding about this topic. Some items will have lasting significance while others are likely to merit only brief notice.
However, this curation does not focus on mere breadth and quantity of sources with a complete disregard for content. Conscious effort is made to avoid excessive repetiton of content and to separate the wheat from the chaff, and the curator reserves the right to make judicious commentary regarding any item or category. In fact, an editorial or descriptive overview exists for almost every category or "tag" (see below) to serve as an orientation to the topic at hand. This commentary is likely to continually develop and adapt to incorporate new items and understandings.
This site is not designed to promote any specific service or treatment providers; hence there are no direct links to sites that do not contain some relevant information that enhances the knowledge base of the topic.
Due to the volume of information that is available, the absolute best way to utilize this site is to use the "Filter" feature near the top of the screen to view only the articles and resources pertaining to any particular category or topic. Otherwise this site can appear disorganized since most items are not arranged in any particular order. One exception is that time-sensitive items will "lead".
Disclaimer: This site will scrupulously attempt to avoid any copyright infringement by linking directly to all sources instead of reproducing, preparing derivative works, distributing, or displaying them publicly. This site will also not link to any material that appears to be available online as a result of copyright violation.
Feedback, commentary and suggestions for other sources are strongly encouraged and will help build a stronger site. Most of these items link directly to the sources where they appear. If any links become inactive because the source material has moved, please provide that feedback. Readers are also encouraged to "follow" this site by clicking the button near the top right of the page.

"White has always been saucy, but her dirty old lady act is a recent development........The story of how such a versatile actress was reduced to an adorable receptacle for penis jokes is also the story of the condescending way we treat old people on television today." ---------
I knew that alcohol and drugs could be addictive, sure. But I’d always seen 'sex addiction' as a lame rationalization for men’s inability to keep it in their pants. Still, watching him desperately trying to explain his behavior, he seemed so powerless and scared. I understood how it felt to need something more, something outside yourself, just to get through a day.
"Understanding the etiology, prevalence, treatment, and associated characteristics of HD is in its infancy. Important questions about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying HD remain unanswered at the present time. Debates continue as to which theoretical conceptualizations of HD might offer the best explanation (e.g., addiction, compulsivity, impulse-control models, etc.). Little is known about the onset, clinical course, and trajectories of HD symptoms as they manifest in various populations and across genders. Public health issues beyond the risks for sexually transmitted infections need to be considered including the impact of hypersexuality on the family, monogamous partnered relationships, child development, and potential risks for suicidal ideation. As advances continue to be made, investigators might benefit from assessing the body of literature about other non-substance related dysfunctional behaviors such as eating disorders or pathological gambling in order to generate hypotheses to guide future research endeavors. Indeed, it is both an exciting and challenging time for researchers and clinicians to be involve."
"Internet pornography use can be compulsive, but evaluation of pathology underlying this is difficult to assess. The present study aimed to distinguish individual differences in personality and psychopathology that predict pornography consumption in an individual, and whether this reflected more general compulsive processes, assessing 226 male participants. Neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and obsessional checking all significantly correlated with a latent measure of compulsive behavior upon which use of Internet pornography use also loaded. The authors suggest the greater use of pornography on the Internet may reflect a general vulnerability to compulsive problems related to basic disposition, and that problems associated with this behavior can be managed with generic clinical approaches to obsessional and compulsive disorders."
"This article focuses on the labor marginalization of black female performers within the pornography industry. Their representations and experiences as sex workers are shaped by a racialized and gendered sexual commerce where stereotypes, structural inequalities, and social biases are the norm. Black women are devalued as hyperaccessible and superdisposable in an industry that simultaneously invests in and ghettoizes fantasies about black sexuality. In light of feminist arguments against the victimization of women by pornography, I have attempted to show that black sex workers, while facing multiple axes of discrimination and harm, also employ hypersexuality and illicit eroticism to achieve mobility, erotic autonomy, and self-care."
"Cawthorne’s probation officer testified that Cawthorne had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She also had facets of hypersexuality, she said."
"This case report describes a case that presented with depression and had underlying compulsive sexual behavior in the form of frottage."
"The man suspected of kidnapping three women in Cleveland and holding them in captivity at his home for years calls himself a sex addict, a source close to the investigation said."

In the docs, Jurica blames David's uncontrollable sexual appetite for the destruction of their relationship -- claiming, "After repeated attempts at marriage counseling and therapy, we have been unable to save our relationship due to [David's] addiction to sex."
"Although exploratory, these results suggest that developing a social identity as a "recovering addict".......and subsequently highlighting the difference between such identities may be a useful strategy for reducing relapse among people with problems associated with addictive behaviors."
"In every way, Don Draper is the product of transactional sex. It's what he knows." -----

The possible relationship of dissociation to sexual addiction/compulsivity (SAC) among childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors is explored. In applying a treatment procedure based on functional behavioral analysis to CSA survivors exhibiting SAC it was frequently observed that SAC patterns of behavior were not sexually gratifying, but that clients had been previously unaware of this. These clients often had poor recall of even recent instances of SAC and described a subjective sense of being in a daze, truncated awareness, and absence of a sense of agency during SAC episodes. Repeated detailed description of recent incidents of SAC in session helped clients become less dissociative when subsequently participating in SAC behaviors and gradually reduced the appeal of engaging in them. On the basis of these observations it is argued that recognition of the dissociative quality of SAC behavior in CSA survivors is essential to adequately understanding it, and that targeting the dissociative elements of SAC in treatment is crucial to disrupting it. It is also proposed that in this clinical population SAC can reflect the dissociative disconnectedness represented by re-enactment of CSA experiences, failure to integrate emotional intimacy with sexuality due to insecure or disorganized attachment, association of sexual activity with soothing and validation rather than sexual arousal, or a combination of these factors.
"This study examined the relationship between mindfulness and various addictive behaviors (i.e. alcohol abuse, pathological gambling, sex addiction, and compulsive buying) in a community sample. A short but comprehensive composite measure of mindfulness was constructed...... Inverse correlations emerged between the nonjudgmental attitude and alcohol abuse, pathological gambling, and sexual addiction, ......The findings of this study support the use of mindfulness as a treatment for substance abuse and suggest the possible usefulness for the treatment of other addictive behaviors." --------------------
"Donezepil, an acetylcholine inhibitor, is commonly used in neuropsychiatry for the treatment of cognitive decline and dementia. This report addresses two elderly female patients who had an increase in their libido and experienced hypersexuality after starting donepezil treatment. Potential explanations for this previously unreported association are discussed."
"Choline is a water-soluble essential nutrient, used as a dietary supplement in different diseases. This report was aimed at considering choline intake as a possible cause of iatrogenic hypersexuality........"
"Protesters in Tiananmen Square may have failed in their direct confrontation with the state, but in their wake rises a culture all at once playful, shameless, and disruptive of the past -- and the effect is that the nation, unclothed at last, is losing not only its inhibition but also its tongue."

Former New York Congressman and current mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner admitted he went to see a therapist in Texas in 2011 at the height of the scandal that lead to his resignation. He said it was not "rehab" and denied he had been treated for sex addiction. “I didn’t go to rehab anywhere.......A couple of days I worked with a therapist in Texas I was referred to. Two days, twice, for a total of four days. Or, it might have been three.’’
"If there were ever a human phenomenon in need of serious objective investigation, Internet porn use is surely it........However, judging from the board of the upcoming Porn Studies Journal, this particular publication will lack the detachment and expertise to fulfill this critical role."
“All of you know I’ve been through a lot this week with my situation, with my addiction. I can honestly say I have an addiction, and that’s something I’m going to have to move forward with in my life.”
"Lott also must undergo a psychological evaluation to determine whether his actions constitute a pattern of repetitive and compulsive behavior....... If such a pattern is found, Lott could serve his sentence at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Woodbridge, where he would receive sex offender treatment. If Lott is sent to the treatment center, he could spend more time there than if he was sent to another correctional facility."

"The purpose of this study was to investigate personal distress and functional impairment in a community sample of male self-identified “sex addicts” and to explore the associations with related variables."
"Triggers for scrupulosity can be any thought, image, feeling, place, person, etc., that cues an obsession. For example, seeing an attractive person at church may result in sexual thoughts, which in turn trigger an obsessive desire to “undo” that thought in an effort to be pure, holy, and clean. If the scrupulous individual upholds an exaggerated belief that lustful thoughts in and of themselves will automatically result in eternal condemnation, the cycle begins."
"A judge yesterday condemned online porn after a 14-year-old boy who was ‘obsessed’ with sex websites raped a four-year-old girl."
"It is oversimplifying to the point of being incorrect to suggest that there simply is no such thing as sex addiction without saying more......"
