Leadership is fluid and is never outdated. What I am not seeing is the shift from management to leadership. It certainly is not happening where I work and live. The trust question and answer is revealing. He does not use the word narcissism, but it is in evidence and growing. What will that do for the next generation?

Tom Hood's comment, February 10, 2013 5:05 AM
Love the curator insights (Amy & donhornsby) "I think this is the greatest sentence ever written on leadership: “The task of a leader is not to put greatness into people, but to draw it out, because the greatness is there already.” That’s what a true leader thinks. We have a responsibility to the world to play a leading part in growing and developing good leaders and leaders for good." and (From the article): Half the world’s population is 25 years or under, so we have an immense job of sowing the seeds for the next generation of leaders.-

Tom Hood's curator insight, February 10, 2013 5:16 AM

In our five years working with the CPA Profession's best and brightest young leaders (AICPA, MACPA, UACPA, LSCPA Leadership Academies), I worry that many of our current leaders are not taking the responsibility to develop new leaders fast enough. Yet when you get these young leaders in a room, it is easy to pull their greatness out of them.

What can we do to develop more leaders fast enough as two baby boomers will retire for every Gen-Xer available to replace them?

Love the curator insights:

4 Steps To Become More Decisive

4 Steps To Become More Decisive | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Not all of us are born decisive just like not all of us are born gym fanatics. I should know, I’m neither.

Via Barb Jemmott
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Knowing what you want is the single biggest factor which will help you become more decisive. When I work with several stakeholders on a project, the best thing to do when we face an obstacle and a decision needs to be made is to revisit the initial objective.

In the same way, you need to figure out what life you want for yourself. You need to sit down with a pen and paper and write and write and write until the answer starts becoming clearer. That’s the way I do it. At first, its really vague statements that come out (e.g. I want to draw but then keep digging, draw what? Write what, for whom). Set aside a time everyday for 3 days. If it’s still not clear, give yourself a break and spend another 3 days the following week at it.

Compassion – A Cornerstone In Today's Leadership

Compassion – A Cornerstone In Today's Leadership | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Learn why compassion is critical in today's leadership and what 3 measures you can employ to demonstrate compassion in your leadership.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): This is why compassion is vital in today’s leadership because it’s the key to the internal driving force found within each us to understand what motivates our employees, what matters to them, and how we can connect the work they do to the shared purpose that defines why we do what we do. No doubt this is why studies have shown that compassion in the workplace leads to not only higher levels of employee engagement and job satisfaction, but lower levels of employee absenteeism and burnout.

So if compassion is a cornerstone to effective leadership in today’s faster-paced, 24/7 global environment, how can we go about building and strengthening our innate ability to not only empathize, but to be curious about those we lead, and what motivates them to bring their best selves to work?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, September 24, 8:47 AM

Robert Greenleaf in writing about servant-leadership spoke about the importance of compassion integrating with passion. It is not enough to be passionate about the work we do. It has be done in a humane and human way.

donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): If you want to improve your leadership skills, the best way to do that is get people around you involved in the process. Purposefully surround yourself with people who can do things you can't and you will build a winning team that will not only work for you, but with you and will stay for the long-haul. You can do it all by yourself, but doing so will only limit you and you will only end up frustrated and lonely in the end.

Coaching an Employee Who Doesn’t Want Help

Coaching an Employee Who Doesn’t Want Help | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Even star performers can shy away from advice.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): It’s easy to assume the resistor is simply irrational or difficult. But “there is typically a logical, perfectly reasonable explanation for how the person is behaving,” says Batista. Perhaps, he doesn’t trust you well enough or feels like you don’t appreciate him. “Often coaching can take on a tone of ‘you’re not good enough,’” Su says. It could also be that the employee hasn’t had a good experience with coaching in the past. “She may be thinking: ‘Why bother? I still didn’t get a promotion after trying last time.’ Or ‘it’s never really stopped me before. I’m going to get promoted anyway,’” says Su. You might also see resistance if the person hasn’t bought into the process: “You have to agree on what the blind spot or development opportunity is,” says Su. Batista suggests you ask yourself: Could my actions be contributing to the problem?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, September 22, 9:08 AM

My experience with coaching in School was that it was thrust upon us. I also watched these coaches contradict themselves. For example, they would tell us that their work with us was one-on-one and would not be shared with School managers without permission. Yet, they turned around and shared. Trust is at the heart of mentoring and coaching. There is also a flow happening in the form of reciprocity when it is relational.

10 Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Lessons. 21st century leaders can learn from TR's enduring example of service and leadership to his nation and his family.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Theodore Roosevelt had a consistent bias for action. He believed in the initiative. He was never comfortable or effective on defense, responding to a state of affairs set by others.

Whether it was the construction of the Panama Canal, taking on J.P. Morgan, or any number of other memorable challenges, TR took the risks of action, over the greater (if sometimes less evident) risks of inaction or delay.

Whatever I think is right for me to do, I do. I do the things that I believe ought to be done. And when I make up my mind to do a thing, I act.

LinkedIn Is the New Letter of Recommendation | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Due to the universal acceptance of LinkedIn in all matters employment the traditional reference letter has been relegated to the analog dust bin.

After a recruiter determines that your resume meets fundamental requirements the next step they take 99.9 percent of the time is to check out your LinkedIn profile. This is a good thing — assuming you have spent quality time on your profile.

Should Strong Leaders Also Be Great Teachers?

Should Strong Leaders Also Be Great Teachers? | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Jack Welch once said: "As a leader, you have to have a teachable point of view." How teaching separates great leaders from good ones.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): But you can bring in an experienced teacher to design a curriculum, or coach your managers on how to present material. This is also about reframing what management is. It is ultimately about achieving great things by bringing out the best in other people. Viewed that way, teaching isn’t just a distraction from a manager’s main job. It’s what the job is all about, and is probably worth the time.

Don't Be a "Water Bucket" Leader

Don't Be a "Water Bucket" Leader | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it

A “water bucket” leader is someone whose leadership approach can be likened to sticking a hand into a bucket of water and creating a stir by splashing it around. Eventually, the leader pulls their hand out, and when they do, the water quickly returns to it’s original state. It’s as if they never existed. Even though there was a lot of activity, in the end, the bucket of water looks no different than it did before.

Via george_reed, Ivon Prefontaine, Dean J. Fusto, John Michel, Kenneth Mikkelsen
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): I like these factors because they emphasize behaviors, not traits. We can all incorporate idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration into our commands if we take deliberate steps to do so.  We can all be like my former Sergeant Major or my first Commander if we ask ourselves the following:

What can I do to provide a vision, a sense of mission, and instill pride in my organization?

What can I do to inspire and motivate my organization?

What can I do to foster a command climate that stimulates intellectual growth in my organization?

What can I do to help my subordinates develop to their full potential?

We do not have to walk away from our commands feeling like we just pulled our hands out of a bucket of water. We can make a difference and leave a legacy that will endure long after we are removed from the equation.  Approaching leadership with the goal of being transformational, not only makes the experience more rewarding, it also ensures that the woodpile is a little bit higher on the back end.

Kenneth Mikkelsen's curator insight, September 27, 1:40 PM

In this blog post Joe Byerly refers to four factors that characterize transformational leadership:

  1. Idealized Influence- Is the emotional component of leadership. Idealized influence describes leaders who act as strong role models for followers; followers identify with these leaders and want to emulate them. These leaders usually have very high standards of moral and ethical conduct and can be counted on to do the right thing. They provide vision, a sense of mission, and instill pride in the organization and the individual.
  2. Inspirational motivation- This factor is descriptive of leaders who communicate high expectations to followers, inspiring them through motivation to become committed to and a part of the shared vision of the organization.
  3. Intellectual stimulation- It includes leadership that stimulates followers to be creative and innovative, challenging their own beliefs and values as well as those of the leader and the organization.
  4. Individualized consideration- This factor is representative of leaders who provide a supportive climate in which they listen carefully to the individual needs of their followers and assists them in developing their own potential. These are leaders who sit down and take the time to develop their subordinates through counseling and coaching.

Anne-Laure Delpech's curator insight, September 28, 12:12 AM

Prevent Conflicting Messages from Confusing Your Team

Prevent Conflicting Messages from Confusing Your Team | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Don’t pretend they make sense.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): The remedy is simple. Discuss the undiscussable. Bring it right out into the open without any expectation that the original mixed message will change, because it probably won’t, at least in the near future. The good news is that it doesn’t have to. If people talk and laugh about it, even if only with friendly colleagues and especially their boss, it will go far in creating psychological freedom. Even if your subordinates and entrepreneurs inside don’t talk about it a lot, just the awareness of these mental structures will leave people less frustrated.

12 Promises You Should Make to Yourself and Keep Forever

12 Promises You Should Make to Yourself and Keep Forever | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it

Practical Tips for Productive Living - Make these promises to yourself, and keep them forever.

donhornsby's insight:

“I will dedicate myself to personal excellence.” – Anything worth doing, is worth doing right.  And excellence is never an accident.  It’s the result of high intention, focused effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution, and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities.  It’s also important to note that excellence cannot be judged by looking at where you are at any given point in time, but by measuring the distance you have traveled from the point where you started.  It’s about being diligent and making progress – either a step forward or a lesson learned – day in and day out.

Amy Melendez's curator insight, September 24, 7:31 AM

From the article:

In a world where vows are often left unfulfilled – where making a pledge means less than it used to – where promises seem like they’re made to be broken – it would be nice to see words come back into power, wouldn’t it?  Yet, words can be twisted into any shape, so you must be careful not to be careless.  Remember this when you make promises to yourself.  Your promises must be backed by devoted action.

The image you have of yourself in the future depends on the actions you watch yourself take today.

Promise yourself and then prove it!

3 Tips For Bouncing Back From A Mistake

Mistakes. Blunders. Errors. Fumbles. Glitches. They are an essential part of the human experience.

Maybe one person took that final step that led to the act that blew up in his or her face, but experience teaches us that a whole chain of events put that person in a position to err.

Why Millennials Are Not Ready to Lead

Why Millennials Are Not Ready to Lead | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
Many Millennials are being thrust into Leadership Roles before they're prepared. But Sean Graber & his company Virtuali want to fix that.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Graber shrugs off the idea of cross-generational compatibility issues on his team. He explains, “Our society makes a big deal about generational differences, and certainly there is truth to the fact that generations are different, but what it comes down to more than anything is mindset.” He believes if you’re open, willing to learn, and willing to put yourself in the shoes of someone else it doesn’t matter what generation you’re from, you’re going to be able to work across generational lines. Continuing he says, “I don’t think it’s a question of when you’re born or what experience you have; but rather are you willing to be flexible and empathetic. It’s those skills that allow you to work through any boundary – generational, cultural, linguistic or whatever the case may be.”

One question to revolutionize your one-on-one meetings

One question to revolutionize your one-on-one meetings | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
The one-on-one meeting is not always the meeting on the schedule either the leader or the staff member looks forward to most.
donhornsby's insight:

A great question!

(From the article): We define Personal Brilliance this way: “When you’re faced with a situation where you have to come up with, and implement, a great idea…and you can — that’s personal brilliance.”

A little improvement; a huge benefit; implemented by a single individual or a small team — that’s personal brilliance! In other words, innovation is the practical application of creativity into something that makes a difference.

With this definition of innovation, the size of the impact of the innovation doesn’t matter. The power of this type of innovation is that it happens habitually — it’s the habit of innovation that matters most.

What is the dynamic to the innovative one-on-one meeting?

Involve Others in Your Personal Evolution

Involve Others in Your Personal Evolution | Serving and Leadership | Scoop.it
The best way to change how others perceive you is to recruit their help in your improvement
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): This is a tough one, because it's a lot harder to change people's perceptions of your behavior than it is to change your behavior. That's because people view you in accordance with their existing stereotype. For example, if you think I'm an arrogant jerk, then everything you do, think, or feel about me, will be filtered through that perception. Within this framework, it's almost impossible for me to be perceived by you as improving, no matter how hard I try.

But (and this is the case of "But" being a  good word to use, despite me warning you not to use it in a previous column), your odds of being perceived as getting better greatly improve if you tell people you are going to try to change. Suddenly your efforts are on their radar screens.

S'Marie Young, CPCC's curator insight, September 22, 11:26 AM

"If you want to change anything about yourself, the best time to start is now. Ask yourself, "What am I willing to change now?" just do that. That's more than enough. For now".

Even when we make sometimes dramatic changes to ourselves, other people can't see it. Why? Because they are stuck in their old perception of us.  Bringing others in early for support in the changes we are trying to make solves this problem, according to Marshall Goldsmith. That enables perception to shift gradually along with us. I know I have old friends who still see me as I was years ago, and don't understand why we don't relate anymore. They weren't around me in the intervening years to see that I am a very different person now than I was before.

A good mentor is hard to find. Before trusting someone with your personal and professional goals, consider these characteristics.
donhornsby's insight:

(From the article): Effective mentors are people who have a record of service to their community, organizations or groups they belong to. They see beyond their own needs and have a desire to make their community and the world a better place to live. While others recognize them for their success, they don’t bring this up, and if asked about it, will give credit to others. Others will know them for their unselfishness and desire to give back.
